NYYFans rate Blender's top 500 songs

This is a very ambitious effort on my part. My friend is doing this on another msg board and I hope it'll take flight here.

Last month Blender had the "Top 500 songs since you were born", or 1980. As with all lists, it was way off. This simple fact is the reason that we all love such lists. I think that this could be a great way to pass the off-season. I'll post (or try to remember to post) ten songs a day. Then we can all discuss. Talk about your favorite and least favorite in the group, do whatever you want.

This'll be a big undertaking, but will be worth it in the end.

Re: NYYFans rate Blender's top 500 songs

    500 - Coldplay "Yellow"
    499 - Aerosmith "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing"
    498 - Jackson Browne "Somebody's Baby"
497 - The Darkness "I Believe in a Thing Called Love"
    496 - Smashing Pumpkins "1979"
    495 - No Doubt "Don't Speak"
    494 - Replacements "I'll Be You"
    493 - Underworld " Born Slippy"
492 - Ini Kamoze "Here Comes the Hotstepper"
    491 - Pulp "Common People"

    My favorite: "Don't Speak"
Back in high school I had such a crush on Gwen Stefani when "Just a Girl" came out. Then this song put them over the top as not just pop/ska, but a real band. Sadly, they've gone downhill since, but what a good song that was.

Least favorite: "I Believe in a Thing Called Love"
Whiny, over-the-top, brit-pop went away in the 80s for a reason.

HM: Here comes the Hotstepper - I totally forgot this song existed until reading this list.

    Favorite: "1979"
Least Favorite: "Born Slippy" - actually I don't know it, so I don't know how it could get on the top 500 list!

Re: NYYFans rate Blender's top 500 songs

Well...I was born looooooong before 1980, but here goes anyway...

First of all, "Born Slippy" is the song that runs over the closing scenes of the fine movie Trainspotting. It was a hugely influential dance song. And Underworld rules.

    And...
    - "I'll Be You" is fine this far down, but I hope to see a few Replacements songs further up the list.
    - The only Coldplay song I can even stomach is the dance remix of "Clocks". I don't get their appeal at all.
    - "Common People" deserves a much higher ranking.
    - Gawd, I LOVE "1979". Should probably be ranked higher too.
    - No Doubt shouldn't be on a top-anything list. They just glom onto the musical trend du jour and spit out watered-down, radio-friendly versions thereof. Yawn.

Every song on that list I either haven't heard of or can't stand.

I was born in '84. The list of songs that have been created since then that I actually like wouldn't even fill a top 100.

I'm so with you on Coldplay. Whiny, pretentious crap. Why listen to them when you can listen to U2?

I love the William Shatner version of "Common People"

Favorites: I'll be You and Born Slippy. These are two incredible songs that deserve to be ranked a lot higher.

Least favorite: I Don't Want to Miss a Thing. Quite possibly the most irritating song ever recorded. Aerosmith should be embarrassed that they ever wrote this song.

Too bad for Diane Warren. Aerosmith should still be embarrassed that they recorded it. It's a horrible song.

    Agreed totally on both.

U2 mixes in some upbeat tunes every now & then, and even their more dirge-y tracks have their merit. Meanwhile, the lead singer of Coldplay is filthy rich & married to Gwyneth Paltrow. His moping days are long behind him.

And Shatner is indeed the man.

"1979" is the best song on that list.

Of the ones I know "Don't Speak" is probably my least favorite since it is so annoying. I'm not familiar with 494-491.

Me Likey: "I Wanna Be Adored" by Stone Roses, "Man on the Moon" by REM, "Da Butt" by E.U.

Yucko: the Wilco song. I don't get their appeal either...I mean, they're alright, just nothing special.

OK, duh...I do know that song, so I'm removing it from least favorite, and replacing it with "Somebody's Baby" - at least "Don't Want To Miss A Thing" is a nice wedding song, "Somebody's Baby" is the absolute worst song Jackson Browne ever did!

Fav: Regulate - a hip hop classic. Gotta love any song that features Nate Dogg.

Least fav: Murderer - Buju Banton has a horrible voice

HM: Lake of Fire - doens't get the play that the Nirvana version does, but it's a great song
Hmmm, this one is tougher, I like a lot of those songs...I'm gonna go with "I Wanna Be Adored" as favorite and "Murderer" as least favorite, and I agree 100% of "Lake of Fire" as HM.

It's official...I'm old. I like to think I know some about music, but I don't know most of the songs on the list. If I had time, I could find 'em and listen, but alas, I don't. ~sigh~

I just looked up the entire list and it is laughable. I don't know how the hell they came up with this list. I won't ruin it for the sake of this thread but all I'm gonna say is that the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and 50 Cent are in the top 20.

Be that as it may, I still think Blender is head & shoulders above Rolling Stone.

Oh man, that song brings back such memories! I love that track, plus I like the lyrics.

I scrolled through the 500 songs. I have 56 of them on my ipod and probably want a dozen others on it.Its sort of an interesting list and of course I'm on the old side.
