It was great to beat Texas 4 games in a row, but a long way to go to overcome over a decade of ineptitude and incompetence.

That's fine, the Orioles had a nice series in Texas, and I'd probably want to focus on that as well if they were my team. But to say this:

The story fit in better when it was written weeks ago and the O's were on a pace to match the '62 Mets, nobody thinks that will happen any longer.
is extremely foolish. No reasonable observer would see that 4 game series as a sign of a material change in the state of the Orioles, and the comments from that article are no less relevant and applicable today than they were when they were made. It's hard for me to believe you really think otherwise, but perhaps I'm giving you too much credit.

No wonder Angelos gets away with as much as he does in terms of negligence. All it takes is a four game sweep to make his fan base feel better about 10+ years of neglect.

Junior better NEVER be RO'd!!! He's as harmless as an Oriole with a baseball bat in his hands... Man, I love reading his stuff!

BTW, I'm sure he's NOT real. Most of us here don't think he is. He actually DOES unify Yankee & Red Sox fans, though.

Just wait until/if the O's win back-to-back games in September.....

Bobby wants something more current? Well:

    http://www.businessweek.com/managing...712_803180.htm

Not only are the Birds the worst team in baseball, but they also score No. 102 out of 122 in the Ultimate Standings, ESPN's annual ranking of how much Major League Baseball, National Basketball Assn., National Football League, and National Hockey League teams "give back to the fans in exchange for all the time, money, and emotion the fans invest in them."
16th July. 16th. Hmm. Why, that was only yesterday! And the Orioles lost last night, so there can't have been some dramatic turnaround since then . . .

At least they are not at the bottom of the list, 20 teams below them. Besides I don't think you can measure how much a team "gives back to the fans". I enjoy a trip to beautiful Camden Yards in Baltimore, and the ticket prices are reasonable, especially to the "non premium" games against teams other than the Yankees and Red Sox.

Incidentally I think its a good idea to charge more for Yankee and Red Sox games. Let those who invade Camden Yards to root against the Orioles, pay more for the privilege.

    So:

    1) You are happy that the Orioles aren't last in the survey

    2) You don't believe the results of the survey

    3) You think going to Camden Yards is great, despite the fact that

    4) You've earlier stated that MLB isn't getting any more of your money until a salary cap comes in

bobby, do you read your own posts?

Given Bobby's delusional babbling's about how the O's have turned it around because of a lucky 3-game series against the Rangers before the break -- where does this 3-game sweep at the hands of the Jays leave them?

    zilch.

That was a 4 game sweep of Texas. And I'll bet they gain on the Jays the rest of the year.

You may want to wait until the O's actually beat the Jays for once this season before making that bet. Even with a 20mm payroll advantage your pathetic team was just swept by the Jays for the third time this season.

Yes. Thank you. How is it possible that a team with such a pronounced payroll advantage could be swept...it defies logic!

But then again, bobby jr. defies logic too!

By the way, where's Showalter? I was led to believe he was just itching to get in there and save the Orioles franchise. Then I tune in "Baseball Tonight" last night and there's Buck, sitting at the anchor desk in Bristol, Conn., looking happy as a clam. What's going on?

Are you really challenging another poster to donate money for every game the O's gain on the Pirates? What a ridiculous wager. Both teams are terrible. The only entertainment in this particular thread is reading all of the excuses for a horribly managed team.

He was the one who said the Pirates would play better than the O's the rest of the year. I think that is doubtful. I also think the O's will gain on Toronto. I'll take the wager for either team.

A similar wager was put to me by another poster a couple of years ago concerning the Orioles and Blue Jays. I paid up when I lost. Don't see any harm in it and it does help pay for the costs of keeping this forum going.

In order for your little piker bet to be fair you need to at least give him 2-1 odds. The O's are ranked 17th in payroll at 81mm while the Pirates have the lowest payroll in the game at 35mm.

According to responses I've been reading on this forum payroll doesn't matter so much.

I've offered a choice of two teams Orioles VS Pirates or Orioles VS Toronto. I think that is fair enough. Although the Pirates have a low payroll they don't play in the AL East. They have an easier schedule for the rest of the year than the O's.

From the Baltimore Sun (bold for pretty funny)

    http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/o...3099683.column

The series sweep by the Jays left the Orioles with an 0-9 record this year against a Toronto team that is not exactly the 2009 New York Yankees. It also wiped out any momentum the Orioles generated from their four-game sweep of the American League West-leading Texas Rangers before the All-Star break, which now looks like a fluke.

Worst of all, it might have signaled the beginning of the Orioles' usual cataclysmic second-half collapse.

    I know, I know -- I'm a regular Mr. Sunshine today, huh?

And Andy MacPhail is surprised people are wondering why a new manager hasn't been named already?

Here's what the Orioles' president of baseball operations told The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec about the managerial search Thursday: "It's not dragging. Again, there is no timetable here. It's not like the barn is on fire here."

OK, that was three days ago. That was before this latest three-game meltdown.

But I would submit to you now that not only is the barn on fire, but there's probably a lot of charred livestock in there, too.

Somebody had better dial 911 and fast, before this team ends up losing 110 or 115 games and setting back the rebuilding program even further than it already is.

This is how bad it got Sunday: The young girl racing in from right field for the Esskay "Steal Second Base" promotion got the biggest hand of the day -- by far.

Otherwise you were basically looking at the same Orioles who death-marched through the first half of the season.

Let's go down the list of the old problems again, shall we?

Listless offense? Check, we saw that again. The Orioles were 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position Sunday. (They're now hitting .228 in such situations on the season.) And they scored just total five runs in the three games against the Jays.

"I think we're just beating a dead horse here," interim manager Juan Samuel said with an edge to his voice when asked about the offense. "We just need to move on from that."

Hmm, even the quotes sound like the Orioles of the first half. Didn't poor Dave Trembley use that line? About 100 times since Opening Day?

    More speculation:

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/spor...ends_pace.html

The Orioles have zeroed in on Buck Showalter as their next manager, with MacPhail meeting with him last week in Dallas, where the current ESPN analyst lives. It was the third extensive talk between the two sides, but they’ve yet to hammer out all the details that would allow Showalter to move into the manager’s office at Camden Yards.
    [snip]
MacPhail again denied reports that a new manager could be in place as early as this weekend, though he wouldn’t comment further on the timing of the decision. One source familiar with MacPhail’s thinking said it’s possible that Samuel will remain at the helm of the club until the first week of August, though obviously the decision could be accelerated if the team plays poorly on the current 10-game homestand.

The Orioles president of baseball operations did acknowledge that his current focus is more on the coming trade deadline than the managerial situation because of the “finite July 31 deadline” to make nonwaiver deals. He also said there are no current interviews scheduled with other candidates, “but I don’t know if that door has been closed yet.”

MacPhail and other team officials have interviewed Showalter, Bobby Valentine, Eric Wedge and Rick Dempsey, and Showalter has emerged as the clear favorite among external candidates. The Orioles also consider Samuel a legitimate candidate, and that would satisfy commissioner Bud Selig’s directive to consider minority candidates.
    [snip]
Team officials feel there are several benefits to waiting a little while before naming Showalter, or anybody else for that matter, as their manager. With Brian Roberts, Luke Scott, Matt Wieters, Kevin Millwood and Michael Gonzalez all expected to return within the next 2 1/2 weeks, the Orioles could be close to full strength for the first time since early April. That would give the new manager the best chance to have an immediate impact as there is some concern that the continued losing would tarnish the potential impact of a new manager.

Also, the delay would allow Showalter, an intense planner, more time to study the organization and its players and formulate a plan on how to turn things around.

MacPhail wouldn’t comment on the reasons for the delay, but he did say that his own contract situation does not factor into the decision. MacPhail’s contract expires after the 2011 season. Meanwhile, a high-profile managerial candidate, such as Showalter, will presumably ask for a three- or four-year deal.

Well, with tonight's loss, the O's drop to 29-63. As some will point out, that mark, fueled by a pair of franchise-redeeming 4-game winning streaks, veritably blows away the 40-120 mark set by the "legendary" 1962 Mets. It does, however, put them on a pace for a 51-111 record this season, which would be the exact same record put up by ... the 1963 Mets.

Now, to be fair, that 51-111 would narrowly outpace the 50-112 mark posted by the 1965 Mets. Unfortunately, however, it falls short of the 53-109 tallied by the World's Fair-motivated 1964 Mets.

Like their historically awful forebears, the 2010 Baltimore Orioles are truly Amazin'.

Not sure why Jr thinks a salary cap is going to help a team as poorly run as the orioles. This is the 13th straight season where the team has a sub 500 record and they have managed just one 3rd place finish. Total cost for this mediocrity 940mm.

There are 15 hitters in all of baseball with higher batting averages than the Orioles' winning percentage.

11 of them are in the AL
