Bobby Crosby on DL With Fractured Ankle

The Oakland A's today placed shortstop Bobby Crosby on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to August 28 with a fractured left ankle. To take his spot on the roster the A's have recalled infielder Keith Ginter from Sacramento.
Blow to the A's playoff hopes.

Not good to have such a big injury bug so early in his career.

very big blow..he got a lot of credit for sparking them when they made their turnaround...i hate to see any player go down no matter how much it might help my team in the standings...

They say he'll be back this season, but that seems a tad optimistic for a fracture IMO.

I feel bad for the guy. Hope he gets better in time to see his team get whupped in October

Their dive and turnaround coincided with his injury and recovery.

Losing Bobby Crosby is a crushing blow to the A's hopes. Crosby is their energy guy for the A's turnaround. Marco Scutaro needs to step up to fill the missing void of Crosby.

Jeez, a fractured ankle? It must be a tiny fracture to be ok in 13 days from now. Either that or he'll be out a lot longer.

He could do the Reverse Griffey. Except then he wouldn't get the massive guaranteed contract. And he's not THAT good anyway.

I think it was said just to keep the A's positive and hopeful.

If you lose your sparkplug and one of your best players for the season, USUALLY the season is over.

Terrible blow. Really hurts their already suspect offense, and he was their de facto leader during this surge (pitching and Chavez were huge parts as well, but Crosby had that feel of leading the charge).

I don't think any fans in the rest of the league were exactly sorry that we lost 1) Pavano 2) Wright 3) Brown 4) Wang 5) now Moose. Oakland's had its share of injuries this year and will deal. We wouldn't 'get in' because of Crosby's injury anymore than they would 'get in' because of our ravaged staff.

Rich Harden, who missed his last start because of a strained muscle in his right side, had an MRI on Wednesday and won't be able to throw for a couple of days.
I'm hearing rumors Rich Harden might be out for the season, as well. Although it hasn't been reported.

Oh no, I hope he won't be the next Prior and Wood..all that talent but always on the DL.

Oakland is 53-24 when he plays (5-3 in games that he was available to play but didn't) and 17-31 when he's been unavailable to play. Brown, Pavano and Wright pitched worse than their replacements prior to their injuries. I think the Crosby injury is more damaging to the A's chances. If Mussina is out for the rest of the season, then I would say that it is a wash. The A's don't have the depth the Yankees have.

That stat's deceptive; there's just no way that a hitter whose OPS is .830 contributed so much to a club's success. More likely, it was coincidental that Oakland as a club began to play better and got healthier as a whole when Crosby returned to the roster. They also began getting great production from 2B. When our starters went down, who stepped up? Sean Henn, Alex Graman, and Darrell May. And they were all beyond terrible. I think folks are forgetting just how prolific our pitching injuries were. Don't forget that when F-Rod and Sturtze went down, we had to use Jason Anderson and Wayne f*cking Franklin. Almost half of a major league pitching staff, no matter its effectiveness, is a far greater loss than a shortstop. Now don't get me wrong, Oakland has had other injuries, which is why I said they've dealt with them all season. But I don't see how Crosby, Rich Harden, Nick Swisher, Dotel, Durazo, and Colero convincingly outweigh Brown, Felix Rodriguez, Wright, Pavano, Wang, Sturtze (in April, remember), Sierra, and now Mussina. You might laugh at Sierra, but without him we've got NO depth on the bench - when Giambi left a game with a minor injury, Tony Womack filled his position. As the DH. That's designated hitter. Womack's OPS is below .600.

Each club has had its share of injuries. My initial point was, and remains, that we wouldn't be 'getting in' because of their injuries any more than they would be 'getting in' because of our injuries. It's a part of the 162 game season.

We will see over the next three weeks just how important Crosby is to their lineup. Crosby's replacement Ellis has an OPS of .670 and not as good defensively and see .5 pitch/AB less than Crosby per plate appearance. For an offense with not alot of depth that is a big drop off.

I take our pitching injuries over Boston's anyday (ie Schilling & Foulke)

That's all well and good, but wholly irrelevant to my original point, which is, again, "Each club has had its share of injuries. My initial point was, and remains, that we wouldn't be 'getting in' because of their injuries any more than they would be 'getting in' because of our injuries. It's a part of the 162 game season." I'll add to that, to be more explicit, that every club deals with injuries, some more than others, and we've dealt with just as many as any other club has.

Somewhat off-topic, I'm a bit curious as to why you think Ellis seeing .5 less P/PA than Crosby is in any way significant. That adds up to, on average, 2 pitches a game (assuming the standard 4 AB). I don't see how a pitching staff throwing 2 more pitches a game means anything whatsoever.

What you are not factoring in is the significance of payroll and its ability to provide depth. The Yanks and the Sox can afford to have numerous starters go down and still send out four or five all-stars on a given night. The smaller market teams do not have that luxury. The way I look at it(as the teams are currently constituted), Crosby is more important to the A's than ARod and Manny are to their respective teams. That is not to say that he is a better player than those two, he is just more important to his team's success. As I said earlier, I don't see the A's making the postseason unless he can come back effectively and soon.

normally I would agree with you on the payroll advantages adding to depth...but in this particular case, in A's vs the Yankees in injuries this year --the volume and significant injuries are not even comparable -- and the two main fill-ins the Yankees got were Small and Chacon, either of which Oakland could have easily afforded.

Also, I realize Crosby's right-handed bat is large in the middle of that lineup and they've played much better when he's in there, but he's not the same caliber of a player that losing an A-Rod, Manny, Ortiz or Sheffield would do for a team, no matter what other talent was around them...

I agree with you that his injury could have a significant impact on their playoff chances, but I think it may be more about the mental aspect and also the loss of Harden for a time...isn't he still down? Without the two of them, it will be tough to stay ahead of the Angels, Yankees or Indians...

Re: Bobby Crosby on DL With Fractured Ankle

Looks like Crosby may have tried to come back too early...he came up limping a bit after trying to leg out an infield single...
