Awful, awful decision. The fight was flawed all over.

First off, Rosenthal should have AT LEAST taken a second point for the 3rd strike, if not DQ'ed him. You hit him in the balls twice, if you are dumb enough to kick him in the inner thigh (the outer leg kicks were working better anyway) you deserve to be DQ'ed. But had Rosenthal taken a 2nd point, the fight becomes 29-26, 27-28, 28-27 for Varner.

I was thinking the same thing while watching the fight, but I gave Rosenthal the benefit of the doubt on the grounds that he is one of the better refs out there. Even the good ones make mistakes now and then, and considering how many terrible refs there are out there, I'm not hung up on this one. I do generally agree with your point, though.

    Attention MMA fans:

Strikeforce and M-1 Global are back in the Shark Tank as Fedor Emelianenko makes his San Jose debut and Cristiane 'Cyborg' Santos defends her Women's Featherweight title in Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum on Saturday, June 26 from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA at 10 PM ET/PT on Showtime.

The Last Emperor will take on a fellow PRIDE FC fighter, Fabricio Werdum while Cyborg takes on Jan Finney for the Women's Featherweight title.

And also, it's a grudge match as former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le looks to avenge his loss against Scott 'Hands of Steel' Smith when Smith was getting beat up, but scored a come-from-behind knockout win.

Also, if Cris 'Cyborg' Santos goes through another opponent, is there anyone that can stop her?

Also, will Scott 'Hands of Steel' Smith get beat up by Cung Le's kicks and score another shocking knockout or will Le put his MMA game together in the rematch?

    Strikeforce: Fedor v. Werdum - Broadway's PostMortem

Wow, what an event for Strikeforce capped off with a huge upset.

Gus Johnson did a reach with his rant when Seth Petruzelli defeated Kimbo Slice when he said, "The most incredible victory in the history of mixed martial arts."

Well Screaming Gus, seeing Fabricio Werdum catching Fedor Emelianenko in a triangle choke-armbar combination for a submission victory is the most incredible victory in the history of mixed martial arts.

Coming into the fight against Werdum, the Last Emperor's official loss in his record to Tsuyoshi Kohsaka on a controversial cut from an illegal elbow.

There were no controversies needed in this real loss. Fedor just walked into Werdum's guard and into his trademark triangle choke.

What a win by Werdum. And somewhere, UFC President Dana White has a grin in his face.

As for Fedor, should've kept the fight standing. He dropped Werdum with a right hand and tried to ground and pound for a win, but he got caught.

Anyways, into the other fights on the card.

This has to be the worst referring and cornering I've ever seen. Cris 'Cyborg' Santos crippled and shredded Jan 'Cuddles' Finney to a pulp in her Strikeforce women's featherweight championship fight.

Finney gets my Purple Heart Award of the night for her heart, toughness and bravery, but referee Kim Winslow and Finney's corner were a disgrace. They just let Finney get murdered inside the cage and the corner didn't even throw in the towel. Finney's eyes were almost closed shut after that until Winslow finally stopped the fight. My goodness gracious me I feel for Finney.

Even Johnson and Mauro Ranallo wanted the fight to be stopped and even the crowd booed Winslow.

Cung Le got revenge on Scott 'Hands of Steel' Smith. Le didn't go blitz in with his kicks and punches. But instead, Le took his time with his kicks and connected them. Le also showed his wrestling defense and used his trademark spinning back kicks to catch on in Smith's ribs and finish for the win.

Josh 'The Punk' Thomson gets his win over a gamed opponent and Pat 'Bam Bam' Finley who made the fight dirty for Thomson. Thomson went after submissions in Round 1. Finley scored a takedown and top position in Round 2. Round 3, Finley scored another takedown, but Thomson reversed it and found an opening for his rear naked choke. Thomson had it for 20-30 seconds and Finley refused to tap before tapping. I can't wait for Thomson to take on Gilbert 'El Nino' Melendez for the third time to complete the trilogy.

The preliminary card winners are Chris Cope, Bobby Stack, Yancey Medeiros and Bret Bergmark.

In all, a great night for Strikeforce with all of their televised bouts didn't go to a decision, despite three of them being one-sided, and a shocking win for Werdum over Fedor.

I do it like this because I like to stuff the results and post MMA event commentary on the day of the event in one single post.

Sometimes you stop a fight, not because a fighter is in trouble, but because any more punishment would be overkill and pointless.

The Cyborg fight was an example of this. Jan took way too much unnecessary punishment.

Werdum taps Fedor after he gets knocked down seconds into the fight. Who would have guessed?

I could see him using this as an opportunity -- "Had Fedor come here, instead of Strikeforce, he would have never grown lazy."

With some profanity laced in there for good measure.

UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin Preview
    Prelims: http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles...-Prelims-25439
    Main Card: http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/UFC...ain-Card-25402

    BB55's Picks
    Fight Card
    Main card
    * Heavyweight Championship bout: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Shane Carwin (ic)
    * Middleweight bout: Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Chris Leben
    * Welterweight bout: Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown
    * Light Heavyweight bout: Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Stephan Bonnar
    * Lightweight bout: George Sotiropoulos vs. Kurt Pellegrino

    Preliminary card (Spike TV)
    * Heavyweight bout: Brendan Schaub vs. Chris Tuchscherer
    * Light Heavyweight bout: Seth Petruzelli vs. Ricardo Romero

    Preliminary card
    * Middleweight bout: Kendall Grove vs. Goran Reljic
    * Middleweight bout: Gerald Harris vs. Dave Branch
    * Welterweight bout: Daniel Roberts vs. Forrest Petz
    * Heavyweight bout: Jon Madsen vs. Karlos Vemola

Card overview: Who is the best MMA Heavyweight fighter in the world?

With Fedor Emelianenko suffering his first real, non-controversial stoppage loss to Fabricio Werdum last week, it's now between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin that will take the honors.

    My questions surrounding this fight:
    1. Will the long layoff from mononucleosis affect Lesnar's performance inside the Octagon? It has been a year since Lesnar fought an MMA bout.

    2. Will Carwin survive and thrive if the fight goes past the first round? Carwin has finished all of his fights in the first stanza.

Carwin's wrestling will be put to the test against Lesnar.

In the other fights, Chris Leben is a gamer and accepted the challenge against Yoshihiro Akiyama. Leben has the punching power to take out Akiyama, but will the two week period between fights affect him?

Matt Brown and Stephan Bonnar will look to avenge their losses against Chris Lytle and Krzysztof Soszynski.

Lytle forced Brown to tap with his guillotine choke in their fight from the United Fight League while Bonnar was TKO'ed due to an accidental headbutt in his fight with Soszynski at UFC 110 which created controversy. It is also do or die from Bonnar as he has lost his last three UFC fights.

Kurt Pellegrino and George Sotiropoulos are carrying winning streaks into the Octagon. The Batman has won four straight fights while the Wizard of Oz has six including five in the UFC. A potential fight of the night candidate.

The Preliminary cards are back on Spike. The Kimbo Slice conqueror and Ultimate Fighter 2 alumnus Seth 'The Silverback' Petruzelli is back in the UFC. Will he reverse his 0-2 UFC record?

And Kendall 'Da Spyda' Grove will try to prove Dana White and the Zuffa brass wrong for demoting his fight from Spike TV to an unaired prelim.

    BB55's Honor Picks
Fight of the Night: Chris Lytle vs. Matt Brown
Submission of the Night: George Sotiropoulos
Knockout of the Night: Shane Carwin

UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin - Broadway's PostMortem

What a great night of fights from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas as UFC 116 delivered big time.

What a gritty and gutsy win for the UFC Unified and Undisputed Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar over Shane Carwin.

Carwin came out and threw his trademark uppercuts that stunned and rocked Brock. Carwin had the ground and pound win right there.

I give credit to referee Josh Rosenthal for keeping the fight going because Lesnar was intelligently defended himself. By the time Round 1 was winding down, Carwin punched himself out.

Round 2, Brock Lesnar took advantage of a fatigued Carwin, took him down, using his upper body to suck out more energy from Carwin, swtiched to side mount and applied an arm triangle that forced to tap. That was a pretty good choke hold by Lesnar. His first ever submission win in his MMA career.

Both Lesnar and Carwin also showed class after the fight. I thought Lesnar was going to his WWE rant again, but he was humble.

Cain Velasquez is next for Lesnar. Will Cain get out of Lesnar's takedowns quickly or will Lesnar take him down and keep pinning him down?

Lesnar's arm-triangle choke is one of three submissions of the night from me.

The second submission of the night comes from a fighter who took this fight on two weeks notice and is known for his knockouts, Ultimate Fighter Season 1 alumnus Chris 'The Catsmasher/Crippler' Leben.

Leben came from behind with his triangle choke on Yoshihiro Akiyama. The fight was also a crazy one too. Both Leben and Sexyama traded blow after blow throughout the fight. I thought both guys were drunk fighting in Round 2. Sexyama was working the judo game to perfection and was winning the first two rounds. Round 3, Sexyama was on his way to a win, but he kept taking punishment from Leben from the bottom with his double punching, his right hook and elbow facewash and secured the triangle choke. Both guys showed heart, both were exhausted.

Leben wants 'The Axe Murderer' Wanderlei Silva next. His granite chin will be tested by Wandy.

Leben vs. Sexyama was one of two Fight of the Night honors from me.

The third and final submission of the night honor belongs to Chris 'Lights Out' Lytle on his armbar/mounted triangle choke on Matt Brown.

I thought Lytle was going to either make Brown pass out or snap his arm. Brown's elbow was crankin' with pain.

My second and final Fight of the Night Honor goes to Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Stephan Bonnar in Rounds 4 and 5 as they pick up where they left off in Fight #1. Both guys were trading on the feet and on the clinch. Both guys were even cut. But 'The American Psycho' needed a win to stay afloat in the UFC and got it. It was a trademark Bonnar win: winning ugly.

My Knockout of the Night? I give it to Gerald Harris on his knockout slam over Dave Branch. Harris was a wrestling freak during his stint in Season 7 of the Ultimate Fighter and it showed up again. His KO slam reminded me of a combination of Tito Ortiz's knockout slam on Evan Tanner and Matt Hughes's powerbomb slam on Carlos Newton when Newton was going for a triangle. Branch went for a standing guillotine choke, but Harris used his strength and power to slam Branch down and knocked him out cold on the canvas. OUCH!

    Other fights...
George Sotiropoulos wins his seventh fight in a row, six in a row inside the UFC Octagon, with a technical display over Kurt 'Batman' Pellegrino.

It wasn't a "Rocky" type ending for 'The Silverback' Seth Petruzelli in his UFC return. Despite winning Round 1, the TUF Season 2 alum and Kimbo Slice shock artist, lost via armbar to Ricardo Romero after being gassed.

TUF Season 10 alums Jon Madsen and Brendan 'The Hybrid' Schaub scored wins. Madsen with his takedown unanimous decision win over Karlos Vemola and Schaub needed 67 seconds to trounce Chris Tuchscherer.

Kendall 'Da Spyda' Grove didn't make it to Spike TV because he opened his mouth about the Ultimate Fighter, but his unaired preliminary bout with Goran Reljic made it to the PPV. I had Grove winning 29-28 because he was more aggressive and scored more points while on his back. Big win for Grove.

And finally Daniel Roberts kept his UFC stay a little longer as he edges Forres Petz via split decision.

In all, a great night of fights at UFC 116. Leben is racking up his payday. Grove, Roberts and Bonnar all earned wins to live another fight in the UFC. Sotiropoulos getting more attention in the UFC Lightweight division. And Lesnar is now the undisputed champion.

Two more UFC events on tap in August including UFC 117 from Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen for the UFC Middleweight title. Will Silva score a knockout and stay as champion or will the Spider dance and fool around to make Dana White cut him even though he's the champion?

I want to see this Lesnar vs Carwin fight, but I just can't justify dropping 45 bucks on this thing, especially when the main event is likely to be over in two minutes.

Maybe if it was a situation where I had planned ahead and gotten a bunch of guys together to watch the fight, I'd do it. But to pay $45 to sit at home and watch it by myself? Don't think so.

For a real top heavy card, 106 was pretty great.

I normally do horrible with picks, but the only fight I got wrong was the Bonnar fight. I actually started a "who could Bonnar actually beat" discussion at the party.

Luckily Mazzagatti or Big Dan didn't get the main event assignment last night. I like both Carwin and Lesnar, but I was heavily pulling for Brock. Brock doesn't like to get it, and is scared to. He immediately covered up after every strike he threw. That could come back to haunt him.

Leben, while not a Hall of Famer, cemented himself as a UFC legend last night. I have no clue how someone couldn't love him.

Every fight on the main card delivered - plus the 2 Spike prelims were great too. Leben/Akiyama was unbelievable, I might call it the fight of 2010 so far. I was over my friends house with about 15 people and everyone was going nuts during the last two fights. Great call in the Lesnar/Carwin fight to not immediately stop it. Without going back and looking at the other cards from this year, I think 116 has to have been the best so far from top to bottom.

So far in 2010, UFC 116 and WEC 48 are the two best PPV cards this year.

Interesting to note that all 5 of the main card and one of the prelims for UFC 117 are USA/Brazil match-ups. If I were a fight promoter I think I'd run with this for the advertising campaign.

I saw a pretty cool home-made poster on Sherdog.com that was pumping up USA vs Brazil. If i can find it again ill link to it.

I unfortunately like Brazil in almost every matchup. Id love to see Sonnen beat Anderson senseless, but it wont happen. Fitch and Guida can win but they aren't easy matchups. I'd be very surprised if JDS doesnt smoke Roy Nelson.

That is weird. For 58, every matchup was USA VS Canada

I got Silva, Fitch, Guida, Don't really care about Hughes/Almedia, and Dos Santos.

Alves style doesn't work well against a wrestler, especially one as tall and lanky as Fitch.

Browsing UFC.com, I finally found out the main event for Fight Night Live on Wednesday, September 15th. It is Damian Maia vs. Alan Belcher. This is also the same night that The Ultimate Fighter 12: Team GSP vs. Team Koscheck premieres.

    9/15 on Spike:
170: Damian Maia vs. Alan Belcher
155: Matt Wiman vs. Mac Danzig
155: Jim Miller vs. Gleison Tibau
155: Ross Pearson vs. Cole Miller

Two weeks later is UFC 119 on September 25th, where Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira faces Frank Mir (according to Wiki).

UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko - Broadway's PostMortem

It was another good night of fights on Versus with UFC Live.

Jon 'Bones' Jones increased his stock in the UFC Light Heavyweight division.

Jones defeated MMA veteran Vladimir 'The Janitor' Matyushenko in convincing fashion with his trademark ground and pound elbows.

UFC President Dana White said this:
"Vladimir Matyushenko is a guy who I have a a lot of respect for and I didn't think it was going to happen that easy. 'Bones' Jones is the real deal and he just catapulted himself tonight into the top eight in the world. Tonight solidified it. To go in and do what he did to Vladimir Matyushenko, and make it look as easy as he did tonight, it cements it for me. This kid is one of the top eight in the world in that weight division. He's got to keep his head together, stay focused and keep doing all the right things in training. He's smart, good looking and bad ass. He's going to make a lot of money -- this kid is going to do very well. Right now in the 205-pound division, all these guys are fighting each other. When the smoke clears and the dust settles, Jon Jones will fight one of the top eight guys in the world for his next fight."
    http://www.mmamania.com/2010/8/2/160...ht-against-one

Who's next for Bones? Little Nog Antonio Rogerio Nogueira? Ryan "Darth" Bader? Thiago Silva? Only matchmaker Joe Silva knows.

    Now, time for the honors.

Knockout of the Night? How about I give it to a PRIDE FC veteran who got his first UFC win over a tough opponent. That's what happened with 'The Fireball Kid' Takanori Gomi against Tyson Griffin. Gomi has those wild wide swings, but he has power and if it connects, you go to sleep. That's what happened with Griffin.

Now, Tyson complained about the stoppage to Jason Herzog saying that he's alright, but Tyson was out cold by the time he fell face first on the canvas. Great stoppage by Herzog.

And even worse, Tyson didn't even shake Takanori's hand after the fight. Not cool. Even if you disagree with the stoppage, just shake the opponent's hand.

Another great piece of refereeing was the fight between two heavy hitters Jake Ellenberger and John Howard. Ellenberger dropped bombs and elbows that created a nasty closure on Howard's left eye. That was closed. And unlike Griffin, Howard shook hands with Ellenberger.

Submission of the Night? I give it to the slickster Charles Oliveira. Darren Elkins took the Brazilian down, but you better watch out for Oliveira from his back. Oliveira applied a triangle choke and then transitions to an armbar. That was fast.

For Fight of the Night, since there was one fight shown in the Versus broadcast, I give it to Yushin Okami vs. Mark Munoz by default.

Both Okami and Munoz traded their shots. I had Okami winning Round 1 due to his more effective strikes and aggression. I give Munoz Round 2 for his takedown and one rocked shot on Okami. Round 3 to Okami for his striking and top position. I had it 29-28 for Okami.

It was also nice to see 'Big' John McCarthy back in the UFC.

Other winners include Jacob Volkmann, Matt Riddle, Igor Pokrajac, Brian Stann and Rob Kimmons. We might also say goodbye to James Irvin after he lost his third straight UFC fight.

In all, not a bad appetizer to UFC 117 for UFC Live: Jones vs. Matyushenko.

Re: Mixed Martial Arts - UFC, PRIDE FC, etc.

    Attention MMA fans:

It's a USA vs. Brazil matchup, not in association football/soccer, but inside the Octagon for MMA.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship makes their debut in the San Francisco Bay Area with UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen Live from the Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT on Saturday, August 7.

Current UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson 'The Spider' Silva makes his 7th title defense and also to keep his UFC undefeated record alive as he takes on MMA and World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Chael Sonnen.

Despite being 11-0 in the UFC with seven successful UFC MW title defenses, UFC President Dana White was not happy with his dancing and showmanship in his last fight in Abu Dhabi during UFC 112 against Demian Maia. White threatened to cut Silva if the Spider acts like that in the ring.
    http://mmajunkie.com/news/18719/ande...ly-ufc-117.mma

For Sonnen, this is his third shot at winning championship gold. His first two was against Paulo Filho in the WEC. Filho won the first fight with controversy on whether or not Sonnen submitted to Filho's armbar and the second one was a non-title bout when Filho came in seven pounds over the 185-lb. limit and Sonnen dominated a confused and disoriented Filho. Filho shipped his belt to Sonnen after the fight.
    http://www.fighters.com/11/09/filho-to-give-up-wec-belt

However, Sonnen after his victory over Nate Marquardt said, "I want 12 pounds of gold around my waist."

The winner of this fight will take on former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor 'The Phenom' Belfort.
    http://mmafrenzy.com/14545/vitor-bel...le-in-november

Also, Ultimate Fighter Season 10 winner Roy 'Big Country' Nelson faces his biggest and toughest UFC test to date as he takes on 'Cigano' Junior dos Santos who is 5-0 in the UFC including KO wins over Fabricio Werdum and Gabriel Gonzaga.

The winner between dos Santos and Nelson faces the winner of Brock Lesnar or Cain Velasquez for the UFC Heavyweight title.

I know that UFC doesn't pick the refs, but I was surprised to see John McCarthy in the octagon last night. Was that his first UFC bout since he left several years ago?

    Yes.

This is 'Big' John McCarthy's first officiating UFC fight since December 8, 2007 when he refereed Clay Guida vs. Roger Huerta in the The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs Team Serra Finale.

Re: Mixed Martial Arts - UFC, PRIDE FC, etc.

Bones looked great sunday, and we have another stacked card coming up this weekend.

I would love to see Sonnen, Hughes, and Guida win, but i think they all get blown out. I just want to see a solid fight between Cigano and Big Country, i like both of them. Pretty solid undercard too.

Unfortunately, i think a lot of casual fans will be upset with the action this weekend because there are a lot of wrestling and bjj based guys fighting, but those of us who like to watch em roll and appreciate the skill it takes to pass guard should have a lot to cheer for.

Re: Mixed Martial Arts - UFC, PRIDE FC, etc.

I went to the live UFC workouts before UFC 117 this weekend today from UFC Gym in Concord, CA.

It was a madhouse in there. Roy 'Big Country' Nelson, 'Cigano' Junior dos Santos, Chael Sonnen and Anderson 'The Spider' Silva were there working out in front of the fans.

The gym is phenomenal. They had an Octagon, they had kickboxing bags, punching bags, some cage training areas, weights, treadmills, cardio machines, the works.

There's one UFC gym in Concord and the other is in L.A.

Here are some of the photos I took:

    Chael Sonnen

Anderson Silva giving me bunny ears from behind

I even drank some Xyience Xenergy drinks, talked with the trainers and some of the fans about the upcoming card.

I'm so happy that the UFC is making their SF Bay Area debut in Oakland. Hopefully, someday, the UFC goes to the Shark Tank in San Jose, but Strikeforce is there.

UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen Preview
    Prelims: http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles...-Prelims-26148
    Main Card: http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles...ain-Card-26092

BB55's Picks (Picks are in Bold.)
    Main card
    * Middleweight Championship bout: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen
    * Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves
    * Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos
    * Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida
    * Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos

    Preliminary card
    * Welterweight bout: Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story
    * Light Heavyweight bout: Phil Davis vs. Rodney Wallace
    * Light Heavyweight bout: Tim Boetsch vs. Todd Brown
    * Welterweight bout: Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman
    * Heavyweight bout: Stefan Struve vs. Christian Morecraft
    * Welterweight bout: Ben Saunders vs. Dennis Hallman

    Card overview:

The USA vs. Brazil matchup inside the Octagon will be a treat as the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes their San Francisco Bay Area debut from the Oracle Arena in Oakland for UFC 117.

Will the real Anderson 'The Spider' Silva please stand up? Will it be the Silva that barnstormed through the UFC Middleweight division and pick apart James Irvin and Forrest Griffin in the Light Heavyweight division or will it be the Silva that danced and danced against Demian Maia?

For Chael Sonnen, will he use his brutal, battering ram wrestling to take Silva down, keep him grounded and unleash his ground and pound with elbows just like his last fight against Nate 'The Great' Marquardt?

A tough fight to call between Roy 'Big Country' Nelson and 'Cigano' Junior dos Santos. Nelson has impressed me since Season 10 the Ultimate Fighter with his standup KO wins over Brendan 'The Hybrid' Schaub and Stefan Struve.

However, the former IFL Heavyweight champion will have his standup tested against dos Santos who packs a ton of dynamite with his punches. Just ask Fabricio Werdum, Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipović, Gilbert Yvel and Gabriel 'Napao' Gonzaga.

dos Santos will also have his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu game tested if Nelson finds a way to get him down to the ground. Nelson has a black belt in BJJ and if he takes dos Santos down, Cigano will have his hands and mouth with Nelson's beer belly zapping his cardio.

Thiago 'The Pitbull' Alves returns to fight since being cleared to fight after a brain procedure in his rematch against Jon Fitch.

Both Alves and Fitch want another shot at GSP, Georges 'Rush' St. Pierre.

Can Fitch outwrestle Alves again or will Alves keep the fight standing and take Fitch apart?

The fight between Clay 'The Carpenter' Guida and Rafael dos Anjos could be the show stealer. dos Anjos has won three straight since losing his first two UFC fights. His submissions will test Guida.

But Guida showed that he can throw in a submission with his arm-triangle choke win over Shannon Gugerty at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones.

Matt Hughes likes to wrestle, but is also suspect to submissions. Ricardo Almeida will look to win his 4th straight UFC fight against the future UFC Hall of Famer.

The prelim card is very solid. I'm surprised that Dana White didn't have a UFC Prelims live on Spike.

    BB55's Honor Picks
Fight of the Night: Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Submission of the Night: Jonny Hendricks
Knockout of the Night: Anderson Silva

    UFC 117 Weigh-In results
    http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/...12255&zoneid=2

The only fighter who didn't make weight on Friday was American Top Team welterweight Thiago Alves, who has struggled making the 170lb limit before, even with the one pound allowance since the fight was a non-title affair. Alves came in at 171 and ½ pounds, and will have time to cut the additional weight for the commission.

    UPDATE:
According to the UFC, Alves was still unable to cut the additional 1/2 pound and will forfeit 20% of his purse for failure to make weight.

All other fighters made weight without any issue.

Nice, I agree with all of your picks except Hughes. I dont think he has the strength to avoid a sub from someone as good as Almeida anymore.

    We'll see.

I saw the UFC Live Weigh-Ins and I gotta tell ya, Thiago Alves should move up a weight class.

He has problems making weight again. Alves looked like a raisin up there in Oakland during the weigh-ins.

UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen - Broadway's PostMortem

In the world of mixed martial arts, if you make the one mistake and a great champion capitalizes, you're in deep trouble.

That's what happened to Chael Sonnen in his heartbreaking loss to Anderson 'The Spider' Silva for the UFC Middleweight title in the UFC's successful San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose Bay Area debut.

Sonnen had the fight won against Silva as he took the Spider down and kept him grounded. Chael even got Silva's back, but failed to finish. I was surprised Chael didn't go for the full mount in the fifth round as if he was like being stuck on Anderson's half-guard or full-guard.

Silva was absorbing punches like they were m&m's. Silva even threw a 'hail Mary' elbow a la Kenny Florian against Chris Leben in one of the semifinal fights during Season 1 of the Ultimate Fighter. That elbow created a gash over Chael's left eye.

In Round 5, Sonnen had top position on Silva, but just like he did against Travis Lutter, the Spider took advantage of that one mistake when Sonnen had his neck exposed and got caught in a triangle choke. Even if Chael got out of it, he had an arm dangling and could've gotten caught in an armbar.

I don't know if Silva visited Scott Smith before UFC 117, but he took a page out of the Scott Smith playbook: went into the bag of tricks and pulled out a come-from-behind win after taking punishment and was dominated.

For Sonnen, great effort, but a painful, heartbreaking loss by that one mistake. That will haunt him for the rest of his life. This loss was his 8th loss via submission in his MMA career.

Silva also gets my one of two submission of the night honors for his triangle choke.

Knockout of the Night? I give it to Stefan Struve for his KO stoppage win over Christian Morecraft. Morecraft was beating Struve to a pulp in Round 1 and Morecraft did the same in Round 1, but Struve, busted lip and all, came back and score a KO win. Struve's lips in between Rounds 1 and 2 were a mess.

Well, former UFC Welterweight champion and Hall of Famer Matt Hughes proved TheDynasty26 wrong when he beat Ricardo 'Big Dog' Almeida at his own game. Hughes gets the second and final submission of the night honor.

Fight of the Night? I give it to Clay 'The Carpenter' Guida and Rafael dos Anjos. Both of them were tough and both traded blows. Each scored a takedown and won Rounds 1 and 2 for that. The stoppage was weird. I thought one of Guida's shoulder shots caused the tap in Round 3.

Well, Jon Fitch earned another shot at GSP, UFC Welterweight champion Georges 'Rush' St. Pierre with his doormat win over Thiago 'Pitbull' Alves. Memo to the Pitbull: move up in weight. Once again, Pitbull had trouble making weight and have to forfeit 20% of his purse to Fitch. Fitch took Alves down time and time again and Alves was gassed from the second takedown after cutting all that weight.

Junior 'Cigano' dos Santos and Roy 'Big Country' Nelson set the tone for a great night of fights. Both of these guys are tough. Nelson was dropped and rocked from dos Santos's trademark uppercuts, but he showed grit and heart fighting back. He needs to lose more weight to help out his cardio.

For dos Santos, he has his hands full with the winner of the Brock Lesnar/Cain Velasquez for the UFC Heavyweight title.

Other winners include Rick Story over Dustin Hazelett via TKO. Ditto for Johny Hendricks over Charlie Brennan. If both Story and Hendricks keep it up, they're in the discussion in the 170-lb. division.

Dennis Hallman lives to fight another day in the UFC with his unanimous decision win over Ultimate Fighter Season 6 alum Ben Saunders.

Tim Boetsch made his successful UFC return with a unanimous decision win over Todd Brown.

And Phil Davis defeats Rodney Wallace via unanimous decision. Expect Davis to get tougher competition in the UFC's fully loaded Light Heavyweight division.

In all, a great debut for the UFC in the Bay Area. The main card was great with a prelim added. Hopefully, they can do some shows at HP Pavilion, but that's Strikeforce territory.
