i dont get why people are acting like zito isnt good any more...he's 7th in the league in ERA at 3.30 (the same as Mussina's, incidentally)...9-6 record, 111 hits in 131 innings...he's having a great year

that said, i'd rather just keep hughes and then get zito as a free agent in the off-season

Why not? He's had a good year so far and had a pretty good 2nd half last year. Who knows where the Yanks would have wound up last year with him, and all else equal, you'd be in first this year, probably by several games.

I don't understand why Yankee fans would want to do this. You'd be giving up two of your top prospects for a 3 month rental who sent out a strong signal by switching agents that he will in fact be going to free agency. Why would you give up that much and then have to compete with every other team to retain him at top dollar? It makes no sense... there is NO way he's signing an extension before 2006 ends.

Hughes has proved him stuff in AA by pretty much dominating the league at 20 years old, and he has developed quite a bit. It wouldnt be worth trading a guy who can be a True Ace for a very good pitcher who I happen to like myself. Especially when there are never any true aces on the market anymore. As for this year I dont think we need him to win the division this year.

No. We can sign Zito next year if we really want him. But why trade away a future #1 for a 4-month rental?

You should seriosuly think about something else . First of all , Zito has hired Boras as his agent , so he will test the free market . Therefore no team will give prospects for him for half year rental . And considering A's GM wont get any good prospects for him , he wont be traded by A's , since he can help win the division this year .

Really were you serious about trading Duncan and Hughes for Zito ?

OK -- I thought there was something in particular regarding Zito since last year. I don't know whether I agree about the tradeoff between potential versus actual, but it's certainly reasonable.

Not Phil Hughes, throw Beam in there or something. Duncan is toiling away in the minors and probably will never play for the Yankees. Something tells me the Yankees will go hard after him in free agency anyways.

Duncan is not "toiling away". He's doing very well since his arrival in AA.

There is no room for him to play with us. That being said I would wait until next season to trade him. His value is low right now because the Yankees rushed him and he started out slow. I think he is going to have a big year next year in either Trenton or Columbus, and that will be the time to trade him.

I think he has a much higher ceiling than Andy Phillips. And Giambi will take over full time DH duties sometime in the not too distant future.

Watching Nick Johnson mash for the Nats is painful enough.....

On the topic at hand, no trade for Zito, yes FA sign this offseason.

I'd vote no... I want a mix of good cheap homegrown guys in the rotation alongside the mercenaries...Keeps the cost down and makes it easier for us to cheer as the kids progress....

Phil Hughes is making this thread look silly...

His ERA is down to 2.57 at AA with an 85 Ks in 77 IP.

I say that because wasn't he in AAA briefly before doing terribly and getting demoted back to Trenton?

He was rushed to AAA, was overmatched, so he's back performing well in AA. He'll return to AAA eventually when he's more prepared & his tools are furnished.

Would have been too bad for the Cubs if we had offered Hughes for Prior straight up and they had actually been dumb enough to reject that...

No way. Hughes will be great for us. Zito can be signed via free agency as a #2 or #3 starter next season.

It might push the Yankees to the Post Season.

    I'd consider it.

3 years ago this would have made graet sence if hughes was where he is at today (in the minors and a hot prospect) then yes because zito would still be under contract and cheap for a pitcher of his caliber but now that he is a up coming free agent it would not be worth it.

True. He was definitely rushed, isn't he only 21 now? No reason for him to start this season in AAA. Which makes the "Hughes getting starts in MLB" this season posts all the more insane seeing as how he just turned 20. Let the players develop at their own pace! Oh yeah, and once again, I wouldn't trade for Barry Zito at all this season. He's going to be a free agent.

Barry Zito is not the Barry Zito who won the CY Young award a few years ago. He's a shell of his former self. He'd blow up in NY. It would be Jeff Weaver revisited.

No chance. Their fan base would kill them... In 3 years when that contract is almost up, they might trade him.

Yowza, its a great thought, but I can't see trading the best pitcher in baseball unless some team gives you their entire farm system.

How about we give the Twins Hughes, the current Yankee stadium once the new one is built and the rights to the columbus clippers(they get every player and control of the team itself).
