looks like Zito is starting to come around, he had a no hitter going through 8 last night before it got broken up. it would be entertaining although i dont think Oakland would even think about trading him.

No. Hughes is the future. Maybe Henn or DePaula, along with Duncan, but not Hughes.

Speaking of DePaula is he still hurting? If not, then why did they not bring him up to give him a shot during this trying time of the Yankees rotation? I have been kind of out of the loop on him so forgive me for not being up to the times.

Replace Hughes with another prospect, in a heart beat.

The A's are well stocked in the minors with first base prospects (Daric Barton for one) so Duncan wouldn't be tempting at all. If I recall, Ryan Howard was dangled from the Phillies along with others and Beane wasnt interested.

Beane would want a pitcher who's closer to pitching in the Majors or who is actually there now. I don't see him being interested in Hughes.

People really need to remember that Phillip Hughes is a good prospect but he was just moved up to High A ball and you're not going to receive Mark Prior for Hughes straight up. He needs to prove himseld at Tampa and Trenton and we can have this discussion again of what his value is.

It's confirmed then. Barton will be a all-star at 1B

Gammons comments came before Kartsay was re-signed and it also may have to do with Dan Johnson, who could be the 1B of the future with .286, OBP - .368, OPS - .797 in Oakland and was the (Triple A PCL MVP last year), but according to assistant general manager David Forst, "Daric Barton has played one inning in the outfield at Stockton, but the team believes the converted catcher has the ability to play there. For now, though, Barton primarily will play first."

Sounds like Barton's a 1B until further notice.

Would have been too bad for the Cubs if we had offered Hughes for Prior straight up and they had actually been dumb enough to reject that...

Duncan and another prospect for Zito but not a starting pitching prospect like Hughes. It is easier to fill the void of a bat than a good starting pitcher.

I understand your feeling about Hughes but Zito is still very young but as NDBoston stated Beane probably would not want either since Beane wants a major league ready pitcher and they have turned down other first baseman prospects. Doesn't Duncan also play 3rd base or is he now being groomed to become a first baseman? Doesn't matter anyway they have Chavez at 3rd. Although Beane could use Duncan as trade bait to someone that could use his talents.

Duncan won't be at 3B much longer. He doesn't have the quickness, nor the hands for third base. The Yankees know that, but keep him at third base for trade value.

im amused at some people that say "we need to win the division, lets make some moves!" but most of these people are the same ones that say "lets not throw away the farm". cashman is in a win/lose situation with the fans/boss. if you say we dont want zito, after he has won 3-4 straight games (correct?), you obviously dont want to win this year. they said the yankees system was 'depleted,' after trading our farm the past few years, how do we produce cano and wang? i am hopeful our farm will get reloaded in the future if we do get zito however

Barry Zito is not the Barry Zito who won the CY Young award a few years ago. He's a shell of his former self. He'd blow up in NY. It would be Jeff Weaver revisited.

Zito won't be traded. He's been a completely different pitcher since he perfected his slider. He's back to pitching the way he was pitching a couple of seasons ago...

FWIW, Beane wanted Duncan in a package for Kotsay...

I would not do that trade, Duncan and Hughes will be worth much more than Zito in a few years.

The A's are back in the Wild Card race, and getting excellent pitching from (among others) Zito

    No way Zito gets traded

If Beane wants to trade Zito, there will be a long list of teams interested who will offer a lot more than Hughes and Duncan

Put it this way - Beane wanted more than Hughes and Duncan for Kotsay. Why would he trade Zito for those two guys?

Ummm. No. Why would the A's get rid of Barry Zito? They're back in the playoff race. If they continue to play well and both the Angels and Rangers stumble in the end, they'll be AL West Champs.

Not both. The A's have been surging lately and are unlikely to deal unless the have a horrible two weeks before the deadline.

Yes I'd make that trade. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. If I had a dollar for every prospect that was going to "be the next(fill in the blank)" I'd be rich. Zito is a sure thing and still young!

Re: Just speculation: Would you trade Eric Duncan and Phillip Hughes for Barry Zito??

No...not only would the yankees be trading away two prospects if they made the deal but they'd be doing it for a guy who may not be well disposed to pitch in the pressure cooker that is Yankeeland. Add to that his supposed desire to be re-united with his former pitching coach who's now accross town with the Mets and there's potential for a disaster

Zito has quietly turned his season around, and even has a better BAA this season than his career mark. I'd be very interested in getting him. He's young, healthy, and competitive enough to survive the pressure cooker. We'll never get him though, because even Cashman is smart enough to not allow Beane to totally rip him off, which is what would have to happen for us to get him.

To get Zito, you are going to give up not only Hughes, but probably Duncan or Cano too. No. I would rather wait for the imminent return of our scarred signees. It is high time the likes of Pavano and Wright prove themselves.

Nope....right now....(not including his Cy year...but since his "decline")...this is the pinnacle of Zito's value, in the past 2 years or so....right after a near no-no...against Texas...

I'm not giving up Hughes and Duncan for him.

His value is probably slightly inflated right now...coming off the game he just pitched. However...for Beane, if he were inclined to deal him, now is the time to do it...

Yes, without thinking. Zito is a Cy Young pitcher and he is 27 years old. Who knows if Hughes and Duncan would ever develop. I'd would do that in a second

Duncan and Hughes are still question marks. Duncan is in AA and hasn't played great. Yes, he's 20, and yes he'll probably turn it around. But if Giambi is coming around at first, the need for a guy like Duncan lessens, and besides, I hate Seton Hall Prep (Duncan's high school).

As for Hughes, again, a couple years from the majors. Zito is a star LEFTY. That's one of the most important parts. He's a 27 year old lefty former Cy Young award winner. We wouldn't need Hughes if Zito came.

Hughes might be the best prospect in baseball. You could get Zito for Hughes right now. I wouldn't do it, just saying adding Duncan is not necessary.

I would offer Duncan and Clippard but that is probably wishful thinking on my part.
