Yep, that's correct. He'll be representing Korea in the new format.

This home run derby sucks. They should just do the best home run hitters like normal. They are trying too hard to be original.

"Pudge" went from power hitter to not being able to catch up to mediocre fastballs. Even though I'm a huge fan of his and a big Ranger fan, I have to think that he did more than just "diet" over the offseason.

If Teixeira wasn't in it, I wouldn't even watch it.

Ditto on that thought. I was pretty excited when I heard yesterday that Teixeira was in it...would be nice to see him crush quite a few and win.

Someone on another board said that he likely went off the "juice" this winter, since he slimmed down so much.

Re: Hee-seop choi in the home run derby?

See, I still just don't really see the problem. I'd peg Choi as the darkhorse of the competition. He's not a complete player but what he does have is a sick HR swing and the ability to be as hot as anyone. If he's keyed in he could put on an amazings how. I'd rather see Pujols or Ichiro (as I imagine that he turned down an invite) but I rather see Choi than Matsui (not that Korea and Japan are the same country, of course, just that I imagine Japan-Ichiro was their first choice).

Teixiera, Ortiz, Abreu, and Jones make up a strong field. Lee and Choi could easily put on a show. I'm curious about Bay having not seen much of him. Pudge is the only guy I'm not sold on watching, and he's serving a clear purpose. I can understand why people are disappointed that the field is diluted. I am, a bit. But I don't get this reaction that the event is doomed, the field sucks, or that ratings will plummet. It really seems like overreaction.

The only reason to care is to see if Ichiro can win it.

Got no problem having Choi in the comp, but Pudge makes no sense. Puerto Rico has to have better HR hitters than Pudge. Hell, even Posada, who I don't like, would seemingly fit better.

MLB can screw anything up. I've almost come to expect it from them. Pathetic.

And this isn't anything against Choi, just that there are a ton of good HR hitters who will be at the all star game yet not participating. Sad.

This has been covered. MLB wants the host city to be represented. That is why Pudge is there.

I would rather see Dmitri Young than Pudge in the HR derby.

Miggy? Neither Tejada nor Cabrera are in it, (those are the only two Miggys that I could think of that would make sense in the Derby) according to mlb.com. They have Bobby Abreu, Jason Bay, Hee-Seop Choi, Andruw Jones, Carlos Lee, David Ortiz, Ivan Rodriguez, and Mark Teixeira. I'm not a fan of this format either. They could have guys like Albert Pujols, Derrek Lee, Tejada, Manny, etc, in it, but because they can only have one guy from each country and their countries are already represented, those guys are left out. And Pudge had had a great career, and I know that they like to have a home town player in it, but a guy with five homers on the year, who has played the whole year, has no place in a HR Derby. Choi isn't a horrible choice-he has 13 HRs-but there are guys who would be much more fun to watch, I think.

There are some big HR hitters like Ortiz, Teixeira, Jones, and Abreu, but the field could be much stronger.

Incidentally, Chop DOES happen to be his clubhouse nickname (according to Milton Bradley).

Anyway, I'm in full agreement with everything LuckyLopez said.

Re: Hee-seop choi in the home run derby?

Just to clarify, Ichiro is NOT in the derby. It sounds like he was invited but turned it down.

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...rinotes09.html
"I only have six home runs," the Mariners outfielder said before last night's game. "The players that enter the Home Run Derby have the good numbers to go in. I told them, 'If I had 20 homers I would enter.' I don't."

Yet Ichiro's phenomenal daily power displays, usually on his last six or eight swings of batting practice, are so well known that Major League Baseball officials are believed to have asked him to take part.

Earlier this week, rather than his usual outright rejection of the homer event, he had said he might participate. As if to give an example, that night in Kansas City he hit a batting-practice pitch to the back wall of the right-field bullpen, at least 450 feet.

Asked if he had been asked, Ichiro did not answer directly. Instead, he said, "I respect the Home Run Derby. It is an event for players who hit home runs."

Re: Hee-seop choi in the home run derby?

But Young wouldn't have answered the International aspect of the derby. Again, Pudge just seems to be the answer when taking into consideration TWO elements. His status as a player from Puerto Rico and his status as a Tiger. Young would have eliminated Teixiera and made a PR player needed to be added (Delgado, at best?)

Re: Hee-seop choi in the home run derby?

This would be an interesting twist. Let's say for that century 21 thing the winner gets a house but it's in the country where the winner of the HR derby is from. This would provide "Johnny from Burger King" a house and a worldly experience. That would be a hell of a commute though from Korea everyday!!! To be serious: The Space Shuttle launching again is the biggest event of next week. Hee-Seop Choi will not be launching any moon shots.

Oh man, I'm looking forward to the HR Derby almost as much as I'm looking forward to the All Star Game. I can't wait until today's stupid games are over with so the real fun can begin.
