If it is anything other than chat about Q and Stanton, the young guys, Mussina's health, I would be surprised -- but I would love to hear about an outfielder

Brian says this is a small part of what will be a "larger effort."

On Quantrill and Stanton: Wants to take a look in the organization before he seeks help elsewhere by trading (relief pitching wise).

On Franklin: LHP. Doing the job down there in the minors getting lefties out. Bringing him up to see if he can do a better job than Stanton did getting lefties out.

On the Sheffield situation: Can't really talk about it. But Sheff is more of the solution than the problem.

He doesn't want to trade Cano or Wang ... he wants to win now but he wants to preserve the future. Needs the club to play better.

    I don't understand this...
Stanton was awful, but he did a fine job against lefties. It was the righties that crushed him.

If we opened the flood gates to trade Posada, Sheffield, Duncan, Womack, Henn and whoever else in AAA that looks somewhat decent, they can't screw this up.

Exactly, after being at the helm since 1998, Cashman has become very good at essentially saying nothing, but still giving the media whores/hoards some quotes. The best thing about Cashman is that he rarely, if ever, out and out lies to the media about a player move. Usually if something is going on, he's pretty coy about it, and rarely talks in absolutes. Sort of when the report came out that the Yankees signed Greg Maddux a couple years ago and Cashman came out and said "we've had no discussions with that player, there is nothing going on" and the next day he signed with the Cubs.

MIAMI GARDENS — Slugging right fielder Gary Sheffield would return to the Marlins in a proposed deal that would send right-hander A.J. Burnett and right fielder Juan Encarnacion to the New York Yankees, according to a National League source.

I still dont understand why fans here want Sheff to be traded . May be i am missing something . Why would yankees want to trade sheff ? Yankees offence is not that great as it is .

How does that deal look good? Encarnacion stinks. Burnett is a FA after this season anyway. Why would we trade an offensive machine for that? That deal doesn't help, it HURTS.

Let's hope so. I actually like the rumored Burnett/Encarnacion rumor a lot, provided we go ahead and snag Kotsay as well.

Can someone please explain to me what's so good about having Encarnacion?

  29. #29

Re: Brian Cashman on 1050 ESPN Radio

Why would you trade Sheff for Burnett and Encarnacion?

I'd like to sign Burnett, but let's face it, he's had his injury problems and he's a free agent at the end of the year. We could get him without trading anyone. Encarnacion would be like us throwing Womack in the deal, he's not good. And the last thing we need to do is bring a young pitcher to the AL in the middle of the year with Mel as our pitching coach.

Because if Sheff could net us two valuable players in return, it would improve the team as a whole.

And our lineup would be severly gutted.

And we could have Burnett at the year's end anyway.

There are better deals out there to be netted for Sheff.

Personally, I think a lineup of...

    Jeter SS
    Cano 2B
    Matsui LF
    ARod 3B
    Posada C
    Kotsay CF
    Giambi 1B
    Bernie DH
    Encarnacion RF

...is a heckuva lot better than what we've got. That lineup looks like a baseball team, what we've got now looks like a total mess.

ARod, Matsui and Posada can easily handle the middle of the order, and the lineup isn't as top-heavy. Of course, this is all contingent on landing Kotsay following the Burnett/Encarn deal.

That was probally prior to seeing what a mess we've been this year.......Also just because he doesn't get traded to us doesn't mean he doesn't get traded to another team that gives him a contract extension as part of the deal.

If we're gonna trade Sheff, you really want to try and net a pitcher we can sign in the off-season instead of a solid CF plus a prospect?

    I dunno about this one...

Yeah, seriously, this is not at ALL a helpful deal. We lose the greatest presence in our lineup, and gain a below-average defensive and offensive player to replace him. Then there's Burnett, who is very, very injury prone, and a FA after the season, there's no guarantee we'll be able to sign him long term, especially if he talks to his friend Carlopalooza about a "free agent tour." The ONLY positive is that it keeps him out of the hands of the O's and the Red Sox. Otherwise, this is a terrible trade.
