    Mets New Field of Dreams

My apologies if this has been posted already.

It looks nice and retro but my problem is that this is a multi-purpose facility and we know how well those fields work for baseball

Oh boy... I guess it's only fair since the Yanks have played at Shea many times. Hopefully it's only for the duration of the olympics.... or is it more?

Re: Mets New Field of Dreams

If the 2012 Olympics do not come to NYC, I assume that the new Mets stadium will not be designed for expansion, but would be a permanent, non-convertable design? It seems to be a big waste of money to build a stadium with a more complex design to accommodate a one year conversion (which would cost $100+ million), just to restore it the next year to its original configuration.

One other thing: What I love about the new Yankee Stadium is that it will look like the original. The new Mets park will look alot like Ebbetts field -- apparently because of Fred Wilpon's emotional attachment to the Brooklyn Dodgers. Considering that the Dodgers left NY almost 50 years ago, how many Met fans today really have any attachment to the Dodgers? And if you concede the fact that the Mets original fan base came from National League fans who rooted for the Dodgers and Giants, isn't this new design a slap in the face to the old New York Giants fans? Indeed, isn't the orange in the Mets uniform a recognition of the old NY Giants unis?

I would be curious to hear from Met fans if they really give a damn about the Dodgers/Ebbetts Field connection.

which is why they should maintain the current YS until the 2013 season. Let the Mets play there

Well, the biggest difference would be which set of fans got the tickets.

IF the Yanks amd Mets share YS in 2012, what about the clubhouses? Presently, do the Yankees normally vacate their clubhouse at YS when they are on the road? Since no one uses the clubhouse when they are away, I assume that the Yanks can keep stuff there.

Will the new YS need to have three clubhouses to accommodate the Yanks, Mets, and the visiting team?

I wonder how the Jets and Giants do it. Do the Jets have their own separate clubhouse at Giants Stadium?

    Comments?

I can't imagine that many Yankees leave much of personal or monetary value in their lockerrooms. While it might not be on par with the YMCA locker room its still not exactly a safety deposit box. I'm sure there's plenty of theft that occurs in sports lockerrooms with the memorabilia world as it is. If I had to guess I imagine that it would just fall on the shoulders of staff members to clean out the lockers, keep track of what goes where, and replace it when the Yanks come back into town. It doesn't seem like that much of a difference from their normal responsabilities. If you're already removing all the clothing to wash/replace I'm not sure what a few other items add. And again, I doubt that many players leave THAT much in their lockers. It strikes me as foolish to leave anything of value (or in a worst case something incriminating) when you can just as easily shovel it into a duffel or travel bag.

EDIT: Of course this is all just my speculation.

Of course the Giants and Jets have their own clubhouses in Giants Stadium. And of course the yanks leave stuff in their clubhouse when they're on the road. And I'm all but certain that there are plenty of extra clubhouse type rooms to accomodate the yanks and mets having to share the stadium in 2012 if necessary. When the Beach Boys used to play yankee stadium, they surely used a dressing room other than the yanks' clubhouse, and you can be sure it was plenty spacious. Ditto when the Pope gave Mass there. It will not require special planning during construction to arrange clubhouse space if the Mets need to use YS at some point.

Is it just me or is Mayor Bloomberg the only person who wants to bring the Olympics to NYC?

It's like he thinks the Olympics will finally put NYC on the map!!

Someone should slap this guy. There are more important issues facing the city.

I'm very disappointed in the new YS design. There's nothing particularly distinctive about it. The outside is retro but inside looks to be pretty generic.

I want to know when and why The Mets have come to be considered the "latter day Brooklyn Dodgers". I am so sick of seeing them desperately trying to pitch themselves this way - trying to build some non-existent tie to Sandy Koufax; all the hoopla about bringing baseball "back to Brooklyn" with their dopey minor league team; now building a new stadium with the "feel of Ebbets Field". Am I missing something here? What connection does this organization have with The Brooklyn Dodgers?

The pictures that you saw were just rough drafts. Since it's two or three years before they even break ground on the new stadium, I would think that there will be many design changes. I'm sure that it will look better after it's actually built.

That's what I've been saying -- what's this all about? Just because Fred Wilpon is good buddies with Koufax and is emersed in this Brooklyn Dodger nostalgia thing, he is trying to steer the Mets identity into the "Brooklyn Dodgers II."

If NYC does not get the Olympics does not mean they do not build the stadium? IMO I do not think NYC gets the 2012 games.
