While I believe that an explosion is surly coming soon, frankly there really isn't a move that can be made to turn this around. A spot change here or there just isn't going to cut it. We will all need to wait until after the season to try and start again.

I didn't say it was going to be a smart move. Steingrabber hardly ever makes a smart move. Just imagine back then we took two out of three in that series and we are about to get swept the second year in a row by the lowly Muts. He is going to blow a gasket after this one is over. Cashman will not get a wink of sleep for at least the next several days.

You know, with the way they're playing right now I'm almost waiting for a move myself.

I agree with you. I just wish it could help the team in a meaningful way.

I could definitly see one of those Bobby Meachum type moves where Steinbrenner sends Cano down to AA and that basically ends his career

Re: Get ready for another Steinbrenner desperation move

I would really like to see Torre and Mel fired. I don't think those two can right this ship. How can any manager in their right mind continue to bat Tony Womack 2nd when he's an automatic out? If he has to play, bat him 9th.

I think it's going to take a change in managers and pitching coach to get this team on track. Look what Ozzie Guillen is doing with the White Sox. So don't tell me a manager can't have a positive affect on the team. Torre is just not smart enough to figure out how to get this team untracked.

Of course Steinbrenner deserves a big boot in the ass himself for not going after Carlos Beltran who could have solved the major problem the Yankees are having in centerfield this season. What makes it hurt all the more is that Beltran wanted to be a Yankee. But maybe Dwight Gooden advised George not to sign him. What a mess!
The Yankees have been blessed with great players over the years. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Phil Rizzuto, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and now Mark Teixeira to name a few.

    1-2 Combo.

Womack & Mel will be leaving.

Re: Get ready for another Steinbrenner desperation move

I am pretty sure Steinbrenner isn't going to do one damn thing. He'll release a press statement saying "We are disappointed .. blah, blah .. Torre needs to fix it .. blah, blah ..
we represent NY .. blah, blah ... I like horse-racing better than baseball anyway, blah, blah".

Noone is going to get fired. Everyone is untouchable. Or un-tradeable. Plus, I get the feeling that the front office actually thinks this is a lost year - so I can't see them make a run for it.

Besides they don't have the fortitude to fire: Cashman or Torre or Mel, or trade one of the stars.

Re: Get ready for another Steinbrenner desperation move

though steinbrenner's ego wont let it happen, the right thing to do at this point is sell at the trading deadline

We are not going to sustain the domination any more - there is nothing we can do this next offseason to make ourselves contenders again with the roster we have now

There's a process called rebuilding that franchises go through, and its time for the yankees to do that.

Trade sheffield to someone who needs a boost. Trade posada, and tom gordon, and giambi and tino. trade womack. trade ruben. I dont care what you get in return, as long as he is young and promising. Lets flip the script on all the teams that have been fleecing our farms for the last decade and restock for the next few years.

if we did this we would have a competitive lineup within a couple of years, instead of the perpetual black hole of mediocrity which we are destined for right now, if we continue to just restock our shotty veterans each year.

Beltran has been medioce at best. Do the yanks really need another average player getting paid 12 million. Griffey is still the better player than Beltran, and he is also cheaper if u can belive it. He can't stay healthy though.

The Yankees wouldn't need to score as many runs if they had better outfield defense. Granted it's been especially bad for the past two weeks because we don't have Matsui out there, but he's a pretty average outfielder to begin with. The one thing that this past series with the Mets has shown me is the fact that they have a stellar outfield corps and despite plenty of hard hit balls by the Yankees, not very many ever fell in for hits. Now, if you saw some of the balls the Mets were hitting against our outfield defense...

Thank you. You heard Cashman on ESPN during the game. A lot of things are going on behind the scenes. He's not just saying that for the hell of it.

Last I checked, Joe is merely using the guys George gave him. Torre wasn't the one who signed Womack in the first place.

Joe and Mel didn't ask for two starting pitchers who are at least 40 years old, another one who's fragile, and another one who had a track record of two good seasons after five absolutely horrid ones.

Joe and Mel play the players that they are provided by the F.O.
You can't expect Joe and Mel to make chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.

We can expect him not to bat Womack second, or put him in CF. We can expect never to see Bernie in CF again when Matsui is healthy. We can expect him not to work our two best relievers, Sturtze and Gordon, into the ground. We can expect him to PH or pinch run every once in a whille.

Btw, Mel never really has been much of a pitching coach.

I hope the big move is the firing of Mel... I also hope that Joe listens to Cash and Stick instead of Connors and Emslie.

So do you think you firing Joe and/or Mel will suddenly improve the horrid defense in the outfield? Will it improve the quality of the starting rotation?

With Matsui injured and Bernie's defensive skills totally eroded; who is Joe supposed to put in CF?
    Reuben Sierra??
    Sheffield??

Womack is his only option by default.

Billy Connors and Bill Emslie must go.

Question 1: No. But putting Mat in CF when healthy will make it as good as it can possibly be. Joe seems to think Bernie is still a good CFer, despite the fact that Matsui, while not great, is MUCH better than Bernie.

Question 2: A good pitching coach could very well improve the quality of the starting rotation.

What was the point in bringing this Reese kid up if you're sticking Womack in CF? Btw, Bernie is actually probably a better CFer than Tony, so I wouldn't mind seeing Williams in CF with Matsui injured.

I'm still waiting for someone to defend batting Tony second.

Joe HAD been playing Matsui in CF before he got hurt. Bernie began playing regularly only after Matsui hurt his ankle.

No; good pitchers make a pitching coach look good. Leo Mazzone may be the only exception. Just my opinion.
A new pitching coach isn't going to turn back the clock for RJ, Brown or Mussina.

Bernie HAS been in CF since Matsui hurt his ankle, and Bernie is no longer in mere decline; he is a mere shell of what he used to be. It's actually sad to watch. Hence the choice to try Womack in CF.

Batting Womack 9th would only further weaken the bottom of the lineup. Regardless of where he bats in the lineup; he will still be a liabilty.

I completely agree. Much of the blame should fall squarely on the bi-polar Yankee FO.

This is what I've been saying, I don't care who it is, we had enough offense to win tonight, even before the ninth rally if not for womack in center. Just get someone who can run balls down out there. Its costing us runs and putting more pressure on the offense, thus probably reducing production there too. Please get help soon.

But good win tonight anyways. Just don't think we can keep counting on that to happen all the time.
I have to return some videotapes.

I think pitching should be a main priority. RJ, Moose and Pavano are going to have to carry this team in the 2nd half, and we need one more starter out there. Our offense will be fine, and hell we can live with this defense for this season. But our starting pitching is not going to work

The outfield defense is terrible and must be fixed promptly.

Ken Rosenthal says that the Astros rejected an offer of Randy Winn for Brandon Backe. Apparently if Winn is not worth a so-so #5 NL starter then perhaps we can package some expendable pitching talent and actually put a capable AL outfielder out there.

Re: Get ready for another Steinbrenner desperation move

    We have pitching talent!?!

Winn would be a nice stop gap, who knows we could even hold on to him as backup or starter after this season. What do we give Seattle in return though? Certainly not Wang, and they've got no need for Womack (does anyone?)...

It will probably have to be some players mixed from AAA/AA. Winn isn't the BEST option, but I don't see anything on our current roster that would tempt Seattle to trade with us over another team, rookies aside.

If asking for Brandon Backe ended up being too much then I think the Yanks can offer either Graman, Depaula or Henn as well as cash and a AAA player -- maybe a spart part like Nieves to plug their catching hole or an outfielder to give them a decent 5th OF.

I'm starting to become afraid that the Yankees i.e. Steinbrenner is going to make a desperation trade that could set the Yankees back from retooling after this season. His advisors like Cashman will tell him not to do it, but he will ignore them and do it anyway.

When you hear the name Randy Levine, it generally means something stupid is about to happen.

A new pitching coach isn't going to turn back the clock for RJ, Brown or Mussina.

What about Ray Miller and orel Hershiser who have taken mediocre staffs and has them pitching much better??
