Mayor Bloomberg announced today that the Mets will build their own stadium in 2009. The City would do the renovations to convert it to an Olympic stadium. And the Mets might play in the Bronx during the Olympics. One question. If the Yankees own their own new stadium the Mets need permission from the Yankees to play in it? Do you think the Yankees would grant permission to the Mets?

NY definately wont be getting the olympics anytime soon, seeing how it looks like the Jets wont get their multi-billion dollar stadium.
I normally hate Lupica but I am in total agreement with him on this stadium issue. Bloomberg is one of the most phony politicians ever. I've said it for years. He never looks like he has any passion for what he's talking about. It just comes off as so fake. So now that the Jets deal fell through, all of a sudden he's a big Mets fan? Wasn't Bloomberg the one that shot down the new Shea and Yankee stadiums as soon as he got into office? Here's the article, and a few of my favorite lines.

Your owner has no problem hosting the Mets if it means NYC hosts the Olympics. Besides, its payback for 1974 and 1975.
Funny thing would be if the Mets outdrew the Yanks in the Bronx that season.

We won't get the Olympics in 2012, but I'm willing to bet that we will in 2016 or 2020. Paris was a finalist in 2008 and is favorite for 2012.
When NYC does get the Olympics, this plan will still have to fall in place.

I know what you mean. Although when I think back to when I started knowing about baseball the Mets were THE team in NY not the Yankees. The Mets winning the World Series is one of my first baseball memories. My passion for the Yankees comes from my father. He grew up watching the Dynasty of the 50's. I went to the Mets game last weekend and it was a little strange seeing little kids with their dads all dressed up in Mets gear. It really does come down to your parents I think because I don't see how anyone under 10 could like the Mets over the Yankees on their own because, honestly, the Yankees rule the media in NY.

If we don't get the 2012 Olympics, I would assume that the Mets would go ahead with their plans to build a new stadium with the city agreeing to pay for the infrastructure (roads, etc.). The only difference would be that the stadium design would most likely be a fixed design without the adaptability to be converted to an Olympic sized stadium. Why should the Mets incur the additional design and construction expenses for a more complex construction situation to accommodate a one-time event that only MAY occur 15 years in the future? Screw the Olympics.
Here's my question...why isn't anyone calling Bloomberg out about the fact that one of his first acts as mayor was to shoot down the new stadium plans that Rudy set in place before leaving? He was so against it then, yet now that he needs his precious olympics bid to save his re-election chances he's all about a new stadium for the Mets.
When Rudy Giuliani was leaving office and he struck the stadium deals with both the Yankees and Mets,the city was going to pay 1/2 of the stadium costs for both teams.Now the Yankees and Mets are paying for the entire cost of the stadiums with the city and state paying for the infrastructure costs around the stadiums.For the Yankees,it's a Metro North stop near YS,11,000 parking spaces(with the city received all of that revenue),
improvement in the roads around the stadium and an improved ferry terminal
9/11 ruined the stadium plans in 2001.Giuliani had those deals done months before 9/11
Bloomberg does not need the Olympic bid to save his re-election chances.His campaign aides were happy to see the westside stadium issue go away last week.The majority of New Yorkers don't even want the Olympics in NYC. Bloomberg will have to be in a coma in order for him to lose the election in November.The guy has done a very good job.In a city where the Democrats outnumber the Republicans 7 to 1,the last three mayor election have been won by Republicans but Rudy and Bloomberg are not your typical Republicans

He may be banking on it, but most people in NY don't want that staduim. I'm not sure getting the stadium would mean re-election for Bloomberg.
I know they don't want it. I'm originally from NY and I wouldn't want them there either. After seeing how much Athens lost on them, why would anyone want them?
I've lived in NY my whole life -- and not only do I want the Olympics, I want to see new stadiums for both NY teams. All 3 are long overdue. Most of the great cities of the world have had the summer games -- London (multiple), Paris (multiple), Moscow, Rome...all but the GREATEST city in the world...

In fairness to Bloomberg, that quote doesn't match much that's said in the article. I don't see where he's calling himself a Met fan, all he called them was "our wonderful Mets." I don't see the big deal about that comment. He's not saying "My favorite team of all time."
Exactly. The Mets play in this city, they deserve the support of the city's government. That's all Bloomberg is doing here.
