Re: All Purpose Prospect progress thread for April

A couple of quick questions -

Can anyone tell me if Tim Battle or Estee Harris even LOOK like starting to hit? I know that Battle suffered severe health problems, but when they were drafted I remember it was more for their athletic abilities rather than hitting abilities.

Also, is Eric Duncan getting spooked by his fielding errors, or is it an adjustment to a new league? I know he started slowly last year too, but what is worrying me is that all 9 of his hits to date are singles.

Michael Martinez was a college pitcher, anyone think he should be moved up quickly? I like him.

    Is Poterson a bust?

Does Bronson have crap plate discipline or is he a free swinger?

Great work by the way, very interesting way to look at everyone. Someone should update this weakly with the stats, and hopefully if anyone is watching them play we can spot trends in players, see if pitchers are trying new pitches etc.

Battle has been hitting and with power, but he has struck out too much. Harris has hit the last few game but before that he could hit a thing

I'm convinced Duncan is just in a slump right now to start the season. His plate discipline has been very good, so i havent soured on him at all. As for his errors, i obviously havent seen any of the games, but id like to see him moved to first as soon as possible. It's not like Shelley Duncan is hitting anyway.

Mike needs to move up to Tampa soon yes. He looked wonderful so far for Charleston. Paul Thorp has looked good for Tampa as well and probably should get a shot at the same role for Trenton soon. I don't think Pope has much of a future in a closer role.

40 at bats is not a good judge of whether or not Poterson is a bust. In limited ABs last year Poterson got off the same kind of start, and then annihilated pitching at the end of the season and in the playoffs. I expect the same to happen (hopefully sooner than later). I'm expect the same out of Harris and Battle. I'm not going to call anyone a bust based off a half month's worth of games.

Bronson walks alot, but at the same time strikes out a fair amount. Its definitely not at Mitch Jones-like proportions but then again Duncan struck out a good amount last year as well. As long as he keeps getting those walks i'm happy with his plate discipline.

    A couple other observations:

Irwil Rojas is making me feel alot better about losing Dioner. I hope he gets a shot at Tampa in the second half of the year, because Jon-Mark Sprowl sucks.

Ben Jones is hitting the ball too well and is too old to be stuck in Charleston. There is a potential logjam at Tampa because Urick is there as well. A move to DH for one of the two would solve that.

Sean Henn has impressed me alot so far (hes starting his 3rd game tonight) as well as Karstens. Kid doesnt have overwhelming stuff but he continues to get it done. A right handed version of Halsey? Desalvo needs to cut down on the walks and White needs to get his command under control.

The outfield situation...Kevin Thompson needs to be in AAA, Rudy Guillen needs to start hitting and get his butt into AA so they can finally get Evan Tierce into Tampa and let him beat the crap out of the ball.

I'm very pleased with the way Garcia, Hughes, Smith have pitched at Charleston but Marquez's stats look terrible all around. Not enough K's, way too many hits and walks.

The Tampa pitching staff by mid season SHOULD be

    Brett Smith
    Abel Gomez
    Eric Abreu
    Jason Jones
    Jeff Marquez

    Closer: Martinez

The Charleston pitching staff should become

    Christian Garcia
    Phillip Hughes
    Chase Wright
    Jason Stephens
One of the DSL guys or a GCL guy from last year.

    Lastly, i love Marcos Vechionacci.

Re: All Purpose Prospect progress thread for April

anyone have any idea how soon borrell and/or depaula will move out of the tampa rotation?

abreu needs to get into that rotation asap.

will someone please fix the control issue for jeff marquez.

any news on the progress of holmann and gomez in extended?

with the entire outfield in charleston struggling why not bring tierce out of extended?

please start hitting jonathan poterson before we start hearing the names gio gonzalez and jay rainville again.

if the yankees draft these college guys in the later rounds they need to be more agressive with them and not bury 23 year olds in low a.

i like irwil rojas, and like you said, he may make us forget dioner navarro.

white has been very disappointing. i spent the offseason pimping him to my yankee friends who don't follow the minors that closely and this is the thanks i get.

    Chien-Ming Wang (25) - 3 GS / 20 IP / 15 H / 5 BB / 13 SO / 3.60 ERA / 1.00 WHIP / 5.85 K/9
    Ramon Ramirez (23) - 3 GS / 16.2 IP / 16 H / 5 BB / 17 SO / 3.78 ERA / 1.26 WHIP / 9.18 K/9

I know all about Chien-ming Wang. What should I know about Ramon Ramirez and how excited should I be about those numbers through 3 games?

I'd be very interested in some news out of extended. I'm still not convinced that Abreu is in Tampa's pen. PP had a news article on S/T a week or two ago and mentioned Abel and some other guys, but nothing since then.

From what I've read, I like Mike Martinez a lot. He sounds like he could be a future closer.

Re: All Purpose Prospect progress thread for April

    Nice input guys.

I wasn't calling Poterson a bust, I hadn't heard anything about him in ages and his current stats look horrible. I look forward to him hitting again soon. At least he has youth on his side.

Vech is the next Jeter. I just hope they realize he's the real deal. Every time I see video of him I'm amazed at how smooth his swing is at his age. Predicted position anyone??

Is Ramon Ramirez the guy we signed out of Japan a while back?? I remember hearing he was going to be very good but he got off to a bad start.

Irwil Rojas has been impressive. Aren't we also converting someone the organisation is high on. I can't remember a name, any update here would be good.

I agree with your pitching line ups, but I would like to see Martinez moved again to Trenton if he continues to impress. I have a feeling about him.

Lastly, could someone who nows give me the rundown on the two guys mentioned in extended? I know nothing about them.

    SS or 3B for Nacci

Ramon is that guy. He's started off good this year despite reportedly being headed to the pen. Same with Henn actually. Maybe we should threaten all the starters.

Nate Phillips is who youre thinking about. Hes in extended spring training right now and will be at Staten Island this year (possibly Charleston if they move Rojas up)

I agree about Martinez. The Red Sox are taking a very aggressive approach with Cla Meredith (closer for VCU last year), and so far in AA he's been unhittable.

Which two guys are you talking about?

Holmann and Gomez are the guys in extended I was wondering about.

SS or 3RD for Vech? Nice. Yeah Philips, do we know anything about him? Obviously its early, but I'm wondering why people are excited about him before he's done anything at the position.

Threaten them all!!!!!! And Henn sounds like he's going great, I'm assuming those walks are to do with his new pitch, but a couple more starts like that and they'll have to bump him up to AAA.

Thanks 38, this is all good stuff.

Holmann is a speedy 2nd baseman who is working on a change in his approach at the plate to keep the ball on the ground. He should be in charleston soon hopefully and form a dynamite double play duo with nacci.

Gomez is a pitcher who is working on a flaw in his mechanics that they thought was the reason for his control issues. He had a pretty good year at low a Battle Creek last year and will hopefully join the Tampa rotation soon.

Cool, all very positive. I'll be keeping an eye on Philips throughout the year.

Considering SS is such a high profile position and that the Yankees will probably want another star there, I say SS.

I like Mike Martinez too. I hope he shoots up the minors and becomes a great closer for the Yanks.

Ramirez is more likely suited to a bullpen role becuase he is basically a 2 pitch pitcher. Fastball, slider. He lacks an off speed pitch to be an effective starter. Could be a candidate for Tanyon Sturtze's role next season if he continues to impress. Could see Sturtze slipping into Gordon's role next season.

Opening night starter Steven White has been scratched from his scheduled outing tonight with a strained left oblique, an injury suffered during his side session in Norwich. White (0-2, 8.02) will be replaced by Eric Schmitt today and could be the first Thunder player to land on the disabled list . . .

Felix Escalona, this guy is having a great year so far for the Clippers, he has a + glove, needs to be moved as Jetes is in his way but is a possible trade chip based on what I've been seeing at The Coop!

He's not really a trading chip. Alot of players have been hitting well in the early going in the international league. Escalona already spent time with Tampa at the MLB level and sucked. hes a AAA guy, no more no less.

    from my patented scoutingreports.txt

4 Seam Fastball sits at 88-91. Touches 94
    2 Seam Fastball touches 92-93.
    Good Curveball (75-76
    Below avg Slider (80-83)
    Avg Change (78-81)
He was a late round draft pick out of Texas Tech, but had two very good seasons professionally. Has a good K/9 rate, and very good control. His stuff is fairly average from what i can tell, but it has worked well for him so far. I'd call him a right handed version of Brad Halsey, but Jeff has a better fastball.

Re: All Purpose Prospect progress thread for April

Nice to see Eric go big fly today. Looks like he has started putting it together over the past week with a few multi-hit games and some extra-base hits. He's now at the Mendoza line, so hopefully he continues hitting.

Isn't one of DeSalvo's strengths supposed to be his control? 5 BB are a little alarming for him, but he kept the opposition off the board, which is what counts most.

And yeah, Clippard is nasty. I believe Chris Garcia goes for Charleston tonight, he's not bad either.

1 run, 1 walk, 1 hbp, and 1 hit so far in .1 IP for Chris.

edit: and then a DP on a great curveball. Not bad

Charlie Manning and Charlie Issacson were promoted to Columbus after pitching well. Carlos Artiles and Jeremy King were promoted to Trenton to take their place after also pitching well. Heath Castle was promoted to Tampa (this was announced earlier), and Mike Knox was promoted to Tampa (after being stuck in extended s/t). All are relievers and not much in the way of prospects.

Abel Gomez is now officially on Tampa's roster.

    Found this item today

3B Eric Duncan is still taking ground balls at first base to stay sharp there, but has struggled at the plate, starting Double-A Trenton's season 9-for-55

Any time you can get an RBI you take it," said Duncan, who came into the game batting a meager .180 with just one extra base hit, a double in Friday's win over the Rock Cats. "With the way our guys have been pitching, anytime you can get them some runs, you are going to be pretty safe."

"Even up 5-0, he runs that out and gets a hit out of it," Masse said. "That's one of the things that people really don't understand about Eric. He can beat out balls like that."

"That's what keeps your average up," Duncan said. "Anytime you really do something you don't have to do, teammates appreciate it. We know each other really well. A lot of us played together in Tampa and we're all hard workers, and we will pick each other up like that."

Cano is putting together an impressive first month to the season. Let us remember that this is still the first month of the season though. However, that is getting harder and harder to say as he continues to demolish AAA pitching.

In 19 games, Cano is hitting at a .357 clip, with 21 RBIs, 4 HRs & 7 2Bs and a much lower strikeout rate. Good signs.

Good to see Marquez finally have a good outing. Maybe he will settle down now and have a good season.

Not sure if Wang should be in here, but I was reading on nypost.com that he has four pitches. I know his fastball is excellent, but I was wondering if his ERA at Colombus might be due to him working on one or more of these?

'They got you for David Wells?'" Smith said he repeatedly hears from his sarcastic friends. "They say, 'Nice pickup by the Yankees.'
"There's not too much comparable between his and my game," Smith said. "He's a finesse lefty. I'm a go-right-after-you righty. We don't compare off the field. I'm more mellow. He seems to like the attention."

Smith, a University of California, Irvine, product, didn't sign until late last August and didn't pitch his first professional game until this season. After signing, he had an opportunity to spend some time in the instructional league in Florida and eased into his new career.

"I wanted to get an opportunity to get to know everybody, work on my pitches, and the instructional league gave me an opportunity to see the speed of the game," said Smith, who also spent time building his arm strength back after not pitching between June and August.
