Sox Backlash Part II: An objective, apologetic Sox fan?

Even as a Sox fan I found this pretty f'n hysterical, and dead-on, if you ask me. I've enjoyed the past few months -- and thought both teams did the ring ceremony right; loved the lighthearted Mariano moment, and you have some stand-up guys in Torre, Jeter, etc. -- but enough is enough, Sox Nation. Time to move on. I think this guy nails it (especially the semi-deconstruction of Johnny Damon).

While I agree that the Sox have def. become WAY overexposed since the WS, the one problem I have with this guys "article", is nowhere in it does he give an example of how Sox fans have flaunted the victory.... He gives many examples of how writers, the media, film makers and Sox players have gone way overboard, but no examples of fans (unless you consider Jimmy Fallon a fan )

Now Im not saying that Sox fans haven't rubbed it in to anyone's face they could find, but last time I checked sox fans weren't forcing ESPN or Queer Eye for the Straight guy, or Johnny Damon to do any of these things.

Plus he trys way too hard to sound witty, and fails miserably

I saw it more as a kid (Sox fan) being embarrassed by his parents (Sox players, Sox organization) making a continuous spectacle of themselves in public, albeit with the help of the media, as you said. I just thought it was a refreshing change of pace to all the Bill Sports Guy Simmons chest-pounding over the years, and the like. But, hey, what can I say, humor is subjective.

I see what you are saying, and going back and reading it with that in mind it does make more comic sense.

I agree about Simmons, when did we vote to make him the official spokesman for Red Sox fans? I must have missed that meeting. I used to think he was a funny, original writer, but then realized that he makes the same jokes and rewrites the same column over and over again.

Plus I met him before Game 2 of the WS and he seemed like a real weird guy

Wasn't Jimmy Fallon a Yankee fan at one time? I wonder if everyone hates Jimmy Fallon, Drew Barrymore, and the movie Fever Pitch as much as I do! A romantic comedy about RS fans? That is the worst EVER! I need to go throw up somewhere. I used to think he was funny, but now I want throw my tv out the window whenever I see that stupid trailer! I actually get embarrassed to be a Red Sox fan these days with how the idiot bandwagoners and nouveau fans represent us. I sometimes wish it were still the mid 90's and I could just go to games, and follow them without seeing pink hats, Yankee S..k shirts and all the other hoopla surrounding them! It would almost be worth it for them to rebuild a couple years and weed out all these annoying "fans" Sorry, I'm rambling....

Fallon is as fairweather a baseball fan as they come. He said in an interview that he was sort of a Mets fan growing up 'cause his father was, and then became a Yanks fan when he got on SNL and started going to a luxury box with Lorne Michaels...and now, ever since signing on for the movie/filming, etc., he's become a Sox fan. Convenient timing on his part, I'd say.

Pretty funny article...but I have to say to his comparison of the Sox win to the 1980 US Hockey Team.

    Love the hangover analogy though!

For what it's worth, this guy's book on fantasy football is really f*cking great. Read it a while back, after the NFL season. Pretty hilarious, and dead-on accurate portrayal of what we fantasy nuts go through every season. If you play Fantasy Football, or just are into fantasy sports in general for that matter, it's a must-read. A great look at his presonal obsession, and the explosion of the hobby across the country. And, no, I am not getting any royalties for pimping it...maybe there should be a NYYFans book club, if there isn't already?

They're still dragging the trophy around all over the place. Its got 2 local apperances today. I'm gonna go steal the thing and run it over with my car.

Hey, it came down to him, Ben Affleck and Denis Leary in the final balloting. Like we were loaded down with so many more respectable choices? Heh. It's almost enough to make you wish Billy Crystal were a Sox fan...ALMOST.

Well, they wouldn't be "dragging the trophy around all over the place" if no one wanted to see it...

Here's the Amazon link...my wife just typed in "fantasy football" when looking for a book for me and, bang, this came up. I had also seen the author on "Cold Pizza" or something over football season, too, though I don't know who other than Stephen A(nnoying) Smith and Skip Bayless goes on "Cold Pizza" anymore.
