Barry Zito has given up 8 runs in 3 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay. He gave up 7 in the second.

He looked done last season.
Its going to be a long season for the A's if Zito doesn't produce.

He’s one of my favorite pitchers. I hope he finds his groove

Agreed. I believe that he has been the weakest of the Big 3 for the past 3 years.Originally Posted by Circle Change

All the pressure is on Zito to carry the A's this year with Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder gone to other teams.

In 2 starts in the 2005 campaign, Barry Zito has an era of 11.57.

I think Beane should have held onto either Mulder or Hudson, and gave up Zito. watching him is brutal, throwing 88 and lobbing the curve over the heart of the plate

And now in 2005 if you could have Sheets or Zito, who would you take?

Mulder is well on his way to joining Barry as co-worst...check 2nd half of last year and so far this year.Originally Posted by deranged2005

Rough start for Barry indeed.
he lives and dies by his curveball. and seeing as how it has lost some of its significant snap the past 2 years, i can't see him being more than an average pitcher now.

Who cares, he's a lefty, we need lefties, we should give up Duncan and anyone Oakland wants for him!![]()

Part of the problem is that batters have learned to be patient with him, laying off on that curveball.
He won the Cy Young, and it was pretty much downhill from there. I also think it was stupid of the A's to trade away both Hudson and Mulder.

I watched his two games, and this is ALL of the problem. The curve is NOT hanging, as someone else mentioned - it's actually really good. Problem is, his other pitches suck! Hitters know to wait, and eventually the 87mph meatball will come cruising right down the middle.Originally Posted by VFBundy

I saw Zito pitch last season against the Yankees and he looked dreadful. In fact I was shocked by how awkward and uncomfortable he looked on the mound. I've always like Zito so I hope he can turn things around. It's only one start this season but given that he's had problems for a while it's not a good sign.

I do not post on NoMaas. That silverdsl is not this silverdsl.
Not getting shelled tonight:
8.0ip, 4h, 2r, 2er, 1bb, 6k, 0hr
But losing 2-1 to Colon and the Angels when he left the game.
He was spotting the ball very well, and even the curve looked good.

The A's have some pretty hot young pitching. By next year, Hudson and Mulder will be long forgottenOriginally Posted by yeahimweird

Tonight's Zito shelling. He gives up a grand slam to Brett Boone in the first inning of his start against Seattle.
He might have raised more money for the families of servicemen if he had based his contribution on "runs given up" instead of Ks.![]()
As a side note, I cannot believe that some pitcher hasn't killed Boone yet. His prolonged fascination as he watches a HR from home plate combined with the bat flip are the most obnoxious gestures in the game.

i know it's early but haren and blanton both have a couple quality starts and sub-3 ERAs. usually young guys just try to throw the ball (see scott kazmir), but these guys have shown some real pitching talent, especially blanton against a couple nights ago. its a shame he couldn't get the win in that game.
give it a year or two and harden/haren/blanton could be better than mulder/hudson/zito. and then add dan meyer. wow.
I think it's a little early to be making those types of comparisons. Yeah, the young guys have pitched well, but they have a LONG ways to go to reach that level. Granted, Zito is overrated as it is, but Hudson is one of the best pitchers in baseball and Mulder can be brilliant at times.Originally Posted by Smithers
