    Still feeling burned...

...on that $20 Mota deal. It was no different than Evil Empire "mistakenly" pushing the +1 button. I had an amount sitting up there from the previous player up for bid - Miguel Cabrera I believe, who's price exceeded $20 so quickly, I never submitted it. We then verified that it was possible for this to happen.

Seems like a $47 bid on Vlad to me was more getting caught up in the heat of bidding, especially at the beginning of a draft. Upping a bid by $12 for a marginal player seems more like an obvious blunder.

I understand that people were frustrated, and didn't want to go through the inconvenience of what we went through to make the Vlad/EE situation right, but that's cool for everyone but me.

Imagine having to restructure your entire draft for a $12 mistake. Not easy.

I'm not asking to throw him back now, as that obviously can't be done (although it could very easily been done last night), but I would like to propose I get Mota at the $8 bid I intended to submit. If anything, at least if he's keeper material, I get him at fair market value next year, not inflated value because of an error.

For what it's worth, some folks were supporting my argument last night, and I would hope in fairness, people would see the similarities to the Vlad/EE situation.

I'm cool with it. Obviously, I can sympathize with you.

For those that said the amount dissapears, that's actually wrong. I was doing the same thing, putting my limit in the bid spot and it wound up staying there for the next player. So I can see how this happened.

And don't be putting the accidental in quotes! it really was a mistake. I hadn't placed a bid for Beltran at all before that.

I would propose an inbetween of $14.

I think it may have been NYDC or ruthianblast that said they were going to $15 (and they were serious).

$14 sounds fair. Would that be the traded value also, if he's traded?

Yes. I would input his salary as $14.

$14 is also keeper-worthy for a closer like Mota.

Which would mean it would cost me $18 to keep him next year, correct?

EDIT: Unless I option him...just read the rules. Fine - $14 works for me.

No. It would cost you $14 next year if you wanted to just pick up his option. You would then have to release him before year 3.

If you want to sign him any longer than 1 year, it would be $4 per year for each year of the contract.

    Right. Understood.

Still a little high IMO (especially since EE was off the hook with NO penalty) but I'll deal with it. Better than $24..$28..$32..$36 for the next 4 years.

It's $4 for each of the years you extend him, IIRC.

    $20 this year would be $36 a year for a 4 year contract. (4 years/$144, not 4 years/$120)

$14 this year would be $30 a year for 4 years if you chose to extend him that long. (4 years/$120, not 4 years/$96)

    I guess I'm confused...

14.6. If a player is signed to a long-term contract, his salary will be raised by $4 for each year of the long-term contract. For example, if a player’s salary is $9 and a team wishes to sign him to a three-year contract, his annual salary is increased by $12 to $21 for the next three years.
I thought this meant that you add $4 to the players salary every year that he is in the contract. So Mota at $14 would mean $18, $22, $26 and finally $30.

You are saying it's $30 a year for the next 4 (after the initial season)?

    Yes.

"14.6. If a player is signed to a long-term contract, his salary will be raised by $4 for each year of the long-term contract. By $4 for each year, not $4 each year.

Read that last sentence carefully. His "annual salary is increased by $12 to $21 for the next three years." $21 for the next 3 years.

    From $9 to $21.

Right. And that's how I understood it originally too. But it was explained to me the way I just explained it to you, that the increase is for each year of the contract, not an annual increase.

    Re: Still feeling burned...

Which is why it will be dropped to $14.

Even if it was $8...you apparently wouldn't be signing him long-term, since it would be either a:

    4-year/$96 ($24/year)
    3-year/$60 ($20/year)
    2-year/$32 ($16/year)

deal, and if you're balking at $20 now, you'd at most sign him for 2-years, even if you had him at $8. So you can renew him once at $14 and it would almost be a wash.

So let me get this straight....

if you choose to sign a player, you have to increase is salary 4 x the number of years?

    for instance:
$19 player. I sign him for 4 years. His salary goes
    $19, $35, $35, $35, $35?

Correct! You can renew him once at $19 (but then he goes back to the auction, IIRC) or sign him long term:

    2-years/$54 ($27/year)
    3-years/$93 ($31/year)
    4-years/$140 ($35/year)

It works well, like our 2-round penalty in the original league, to make sure the top players make it back into the draft easily. I have Randy Johnson at $37. I can renew him next year at that price, or sign him to a 2-year/$90 contract ($45/year). I wouldn't sign him longer than that because then you get to $49/year or $53/year.

You wouldn't have given a 4 year deal to an $8 Mota anyway.

That would mean you were on the hook for $24 per for then next 4 years.

Considering only 2 closers went for more than that (I think), that wouldn't be a prudent business decision.

Lidge, Wagner, Benitez, Hoffman, etc all went for LESS than $20. Mota wouldn't have been exteneded beyond two years.

You'll only see 4 year deals for the unproven, but young and talented, $1-$3 guys we all picked up...

Almost everyone over $30 will be back in the auction next year.

All Sox jokes aside, at this point in time I would rather protect a $1 Bellhorn than a $38 Ichiro or a $36 Bonds.

Its not like you can't get them back once you return them to the auction; it just means you'll have to bid again...

Yep, I know. (Thanks for clarifying, though)

Yeah, and you had a lot of wasted payroll.

If I had to do it again, I'd have one more very good player, but I'm fairly happy with the team I ended up with for $232. No one's going to carry my team, but then again, an injury wouldn't be crippling. (BTW, look for a Squeakawatts self-analysis report by the end of the week. )

But you can go over the $260 if you have an injury anyway...

I feel the same way. I could have upped my bid on another player I really wanted by and additional $11 over what I payed for the guy I eventually took in his place.

Either way, I'm happy that I landed a couple of impact guys (Bonds, Ichiro, Gagne) while at the same time getting some great, young, fantasy talent that will be a fortune by next year, but isn't now (Bay, Hafner, Rowand) and some potential longterm keepers (Broussard, Affeldt, Ankiel, Lowry, Bonderman, Hudson, Berkman)

He will miss time early this year, but being that we're a keeper league, it works for me!

Definately. Berkman can be a monster when he gets going. He helped carry one of my teams last year.

Kinda kicking myself over the 47 dollar pujols. I told myself that I wasn't going to go above 40 for anyone. I needed him though. It's all or nothing this year!

Yep. Pujols, Vlad, et.al will all perform, but they were WAY overpriced.
