El Duque for the Hall

I don't know where I should put this thread, but I was wondering how many people here think Orlando Hernandez could make the Hall of Fame. Combining the Cuban stats I could find with the American, he has 187 wins and 88 losses. I'm sure his ERA is low. Any chance the writers will look at his Cuban numbers and experience as one of the great Cuban ballplayers ever, combine it with his very good Major League years, and put him in alongside Martin Dihigo, generally considered the greatest Cuban player to ever play?

The only way Duque gets into the Hall is through the visitors entrance. The Hall people do not include Cuban stats and if they did then they could not keep out guys whose numbers got hugely inflated in Japan. He had some moments of brilliance and solid seasons but he was never anywhere close to dominant.

I hate to sound cliche, but it's not the Hall of Very Good. It's tha Hall of Fame. Sure some people get snubbed, but Orlando is not going to be one of them.

You figure if Jim Kaat and Bert Blyleven don't make it, where does Duque stand?

It's an interesting question, but I think that if Luis Tiant is not in the hall, then El Duque has no chance. And 187 wins is nowhere near where he would need to be to get in, regardless of where he won them.

I think he'll get in as long as he doesn't go up the same year that Matt Nokes and Kevin Maas do

Just because i think it's amazing, in 1990 Kevin Maas played in 79 games and hit 21 HR, he batted .252 those are Sammy Sosa like numbers

I am actually a small hall kind of guy. Don't want Mattingly, Munson, Rice, Evans, any of those other guys. I don't think El Duque should be in either. The question was really about the support he may or may not get when he retires. I've heard from a couple writers about how if Ichiro continues at anywhere near the pace he's set for the last 4 years, he'll have a good chance. Given that, I wanted to gauge the possible support Duque might have.

I also don't think just the 180 wins will completely hurt him. He wasn't allowed to play in 96 and 97, because of politics, and those were prime 26, 27 (or, more likely, 30, 31) years for him.

But, you're all probably right. Had he dominated in the MLB, maybe someone would have argued about some sort of translation factor from his Cuban numbers, but since he didn't have that, it's not very likely.

With a 4.04 ERA in the Major Leagues? There wouldn't be a chance. Luis Tiant won 229 games and had a career 3.30 ERA with close to the same winning percentage. Tiant had some incredible years with an ERA of 1.60 in one (1968) and another saw a 1.91 ERA (1972).

If Tiant doesn't eventually get in how could Hernandez? Hmmmmm, unless he holds the door open for "El Tiante".
