Isn't Cortez the guy who had a tough time hitting anything for San Francisco and was cut by them mid-season a few years back, or am I thinking of someone else? I've gotta agree with Dabomb on this one-the second long pass to Moss was really a bad play by the Cowboys. You can't let any receiver get behind you in that situation. I think that Cowboys fans should be encouraged by the defense's performance (before the last four minutes, anyway.) I still believe that the Cowboys are going to be at least a Wild Card.Originally Posted by DaBoys4LifeNYY35

Aaron Glenn should be cut IMMEDIATELY. I don't even want them to wait until tomorrow morning; just do it now. In fact, Tuna should go Coach Nickerson from All The Right Moves on Glenn and not even let him on the bus.
HOW IN THE BLUE HELL do you get beaten by a guy you used to lineup against everyday in practice on the EXACT SAME PLAY TWICE IN A ROW???
Absolutely inexcusable and utterly ridiculous. To borrow something from the Sports Bar, I present Aaron Glenn: Team Bitch.

We're not even getting into the fact that Bledsoe must have been thinking he was on a basketball court with all those bounce passes because it shouldn't have come to that.
And what was with the pass-happy offense in the 2nd half? Can we give Tuna back the play-calling duties? It's not even 2nd-guessing... Madden was 1st guessing it as it was happening. Julius had 22 rushes for 81 yards--over a 3 yards per carry average, nearly 4. So he gains 6 on 1st down, it's 2nd and 4 and you go for 3 straight pass plays? All we needed to do was get within FG range, Tyson Thompson gift-wraps great field position with a monster return, we gain 6 on 1st down, and YOU CALL THREE STRAIGHT PASS PLAYS?! It's not like it's Antowain Smith The Great or a washed up Eddie George back there--it's Julius freaking Jones with Larry Allen and Flozell Adams to run behind... and you call three straight pass plays? It's not like we even needed a TD there, PLUS there was still about 2 and a half left on the clock. I don't care how little confidence you have in your kicker--you still have enough time to play for FG range FIRST, and once you're there THEN you play for a TD. With Julius Jones and time left on the clock though, EVEN playing for a TD should NOT include 3 straight pass plays beginning on 2nd and 4. For the above reasons, I wasn't even worried after the Skins pulled ahead, even less so after Thompson's big return--seriously, I wasn't even worried, just mildly annoyed. It shouldn't have come down to the feeble last second attempts as time expired.
Again, Julius only had 22 rushes, and it's not like he wasn't having success. THIS is the type of game where you run Julius 30 times--NOT virtually meaningless games against the Seahawks toward the end of a losing season--especially with San Fran coming next week.
This game was lost through missed opportunities and untimely bad play-calling. Period. The Cowboys LOST this game. Period.
The positive note, an EXTREMELY positive one at that, was the contributions from the draft picks, and, for the most part, the defense as a whole. Offensive line, too.

Yes that's all true. However, the point of that was, that there was ABSOLUTELY no need to freak out at that point even after what the defense just allowed because, all other prior mistakes on both sides of the ball aside, the game was still 100% and extremely REALISTICALLY winnable, ESPECIALLY with a return that set them in Skins territory.Originally Posted by dabomb2045

And, what makes all of the above the most upsetting is that Tuna talked during Training Camp about his regret at being too pass-happy and overcomplicating things last season and that he would go back to living by the run as he usually likes to do. So what is the final straw (notice that I said final straw and not "#1 ONLY REASON) in losing this game? Freaking out and getting pass-happy. If Payton's not going to stick to the type of game-calling Tuna talked about, then I don't want him calling plays, no matter how many flea-flickers we get to work.
In fact, what maybe stings most of all is losing a game in which a flea-flicker works so riotously succesfully. Heh. I would put in a winkie if I weren't so upset.

I do agree that the play-calling got real weird on the last few drives (I cant comment as to most of the game...since I missed the first half due to watching the Yanks and some of the 3rd quarter)Originally Posted by DaBoys4LifeNYY35
they got jipped on the Adams holding call for sure, and that was huge....I would have also kept running the ball after the big kick return....Jones had a nice run on 1st down and I think the ball was at like 43 at that point, so realistically you only need about 15 yards to get a good chance for a FG (then again Cortez sucks...so maybe you want more)
instead you run a 10 yard sideline, which had no chance of getting completed....a 5-yard out in which Taylor flattened Crayton....then a pet peeve of mine, running a 3-yard pattern when you need FOUR yards for the first
personally I think its a BAD idea for Payton to be calling plays...he just isnt very good, he got killed here in NY when he called plays for the Giants....he's conservative at the wrong times, and he's too risky at the wrong times as well

This also came up on the first drive in the 4th quarter, the drive where we settled for a field goal after driving to a first down at the Washington 17. After Larry Allen got that holding penalty to make it 1st and 20 from the 27...HELLO?! It's still first down! Complacently settling for a field goal here is not smart. WHY was that moment seen as a good time to rest Julius and rush Tyson Thompson 3 straight times for a total of 4 yards? The other Cowboys RBs might not have been having too much success, but Julius was. Seems like both an awkward time to turn to the run (as opposed to 2nd and 4 and just trying to get in FG range after the huge return) and a horrible time to replace Julius with Tyson Thompson. I can sort of understand (though don't totally agree with) why they didn't attempt any pass plays there, because I read that Parcells was confident in the defense and didn't want to risk a turnover, but if you're going to go with that reasoning and rush it 3 straight times, don't do it with Tyson Thompson. Don't know that the result of that particular drive would have been any different, but at least give yourself a chance by using your #1 RB instead of just conceding like that. If you go back, this also happened on the earlier drive when they settled for a field goal, except that time, it was Anthony Thomas who came in.Originally Posted by DaBoys4LifeNYY35
Julius showed last season he can handle 25-30 carries a game. Sure, you don't want to do that every single week, but next week they're playing SF, and one would hope having a good week against the Niners wouldn't be as taxing for him and he could rest a little then.

On an encouraging note, the last time the Cowboys lost to the Redskins at home, the Cowboys won the Super Bowl. Just a reminder that all is not lost! (Not that I for 1 second even CONSIDERED wavering from my 11 win prediction based on a Week 2 game that could have easily turned out differently--it's just some encouragement in case some of you are starting to doubt.)

I'd say the call on when Taylor nailed Crayton after he caught the ball, took two steps and fumbled, but ruled dead was potentially huge if the Skins lost. The Skins were scooping up the fumble and going in for another TD that would have made it 21-13. There was a similair play earlier in the game too. There were definitely some questionable calls on both sides.Originally Posted by dabomb2045

To any of you who were upset that ABC showed the telethon instead of the ring around the collar inductions, I say get a grip.
I'd say this game was lost because of the coaches. For instance, why must there be a set CB lineup on the prevent? Washington's most dangerous receiver is Moss. Lineup your speed CB (Newman) against him! But no, Newman is stuck in the slot against a noname TE. Just because generally teams line up their best receiver in the slot doesn't mean it'll happen all of the time. Especially after Glenn got burned on the 1st TD, they should've had rotated the positions to have Newman guard Moss no matter where he was and adjust accordingly. It was also on Roy Williams since he's supposed to be the deep safety (and bit inside for no reason) but he's never been known as a cover safety! Blitz Roy! They should've blitzed more towards the end since Brunell had a ton of time. And what's with the stupid offensive playcalling in the 2nd half? There were times when they were too conservative and then there were also times when they went too much with the pass. Reminds me of Torre's occasionally bad ingame management. Such an aggravating game. I was so happy when Bubba hit the walkoff but that high came crashing down on those two Brunell passes...

What a relief.
Things that need to improve:
1. Kicking--as in, find a new, better person to do it, if possible.
2. Tackling--too many extra yards gained by unfinished tackles.
3. Penalties.
I'd list turnovers based on this game alone, but sometimes they can be helped, sometimes (as with the Glenn tipped ball on the sideline) they're incidental.
The fake punt while still very much in your own territory and with over 4 minutes left... in the THIRD quarter, was stupid, and Parcells knew that, so I doubt we see that happen in a situation like that again, so I'll refrain from making play-calling a problem for the 2nd week straight.![]()
For a positive, I like the defense forcing turnovers all over the place thus far in the season.

From what I could gather on the radio, snapping is one thing. The two bad McBriar punts that sounded like they resulted from bad snaps resulted in scores both times. I said earlier I was afraid of this when they let Robinson go for Condo. And now, Condo has been replaced, too. That stings.
What did the rest of y'all think about the play-calling? During the game from the Cowboys' announcers and now during the post-game show, I heard/am hearing a lot about not utilizing Witten. Others' impressions?

Let's forget about how badly underthrown the ball was. Unless Sherry Glenn runs past the white line in front of the end zone, it doesn't matter much, right? I'd LOVE to hear someone explain to me why he is cutting his route off at the 1-yard line.
Also -- Drew Bledsoe, meet Jason Witten. He wears #82, and he is your Pro Bowl tight end. You remember how useful those are, right? Kinda like that Ben Coates guy you used to throw to all the time in New England? See if you can keep that in mind while da Iggles are blitzing the crap out of you next week.

I couldn't agree more. Why he went to that fade pattern on 3rd down I'll never know. That being said, the Dallas defense really needs to stop giving up the big pass play. It seems like it is going to be at least a 2-3 play deal now as all a team has to do is go long against the secondary and Dallas can't do a thing to stop it.Originally Posted by dabomb2045

Some comments on the game...
Wow, who woulda thought that the Cowboys' offense would smoke Philly's D like that? The offensive line played its best game of the year. They protected Bledsoe so well, I don't remember any point where Drew was hit. They also opened some running lanes for Jones/Thompson. The secondary also played extremely well which led to some pressure on McNabb and gave a chance for the D-line to go after Donovan. Even the blitzes worked well as it made McNabb rush his throws...
Julius Jones still looks gimpy at times. In fact, he looks relatively slow from last year. I think he's bulked up too much and robbed him of his shiftiness. He did have a nice run but he had very good blocking that sprung him. Thompson actually ran well today... I initially looked at Tyson Thompson as a Troy Hambrick clone. IE, one who has decent speed but if a defender laid a finger on him, he'd drop like a rock. However, he looked very good today as he actually tried to fight through tackles.
Drew Bledsoe looked impressive. He was given tons of protection so he'd better look fantastic. Terry Glenn was fantastic throughout the game although he did have one drop that would've meant a 3rd td for him...
Even the maligned Jose Cortez was solid on his made field goals.
This game reminded me of the 90's Cowboys. Superb offensive line play with solid defense.
(Not a bad early birthday gift for me with wins by the Yankees and the Cowboys!)
