    Danny Borrell in ST

I have a source that tells me that Borrell pitched BP yesterday against A-Rod, Posada, Matsui and Martinez and looked great. BP pitchers have to tell the batters what is coming and Borrell still blew several fastballs by A-Rod and had him fooled on the change-up. The curve was also very good. This is promising news regarding his recovery from shoulder surgery. Maybe we'll have another lefty available for this year.

    Awesome!

Maybe he could be this year's 2nd half savior like El Duque when someone else goes down.

Sweet. Now we have our 7th or 8th starter? I lost count. Too bad he probably won't get a shot at starting. However, with Stanton as our only lefty reliever, I could see him helping out in the pen.

I wouldnt put much into that. It was only an intrasquad game and it's the beggining of the season.

Yeah, it's just I think Wang gets a little too much credit around here. He has a lot to work on not to mention staying healthy, not surprising Matsui (lefty) took him deep...

Is Wang going to sit in AAA until the Yankees need him or is he going to make opening day roster as a reliever?

Given Torre's propensity to go with "experience," in all likelihood the former.
    Nothing to say

I would rather have Wang in AAA in the starting rotation than to have him sitting and doing mop-up duty out of the bullpen. He's a potential starter, not some no-good reliever.

Wand will probably be in AAA, until Brown gets hurt. Then he will get the #5 slot, or Sturtze will, and Wand will get his slot as the long man.

I don't see Borrell making the squad, as the Yanks probably want him to spend the se in AAA and build back his arm strength. Maybe he comes here in 2006.

    Re: Danny Borrell in ST

I'm not disagreeing with the original source, but I was at spring training for the last four days, and Borrell wasn't really spectacular. The hitters don't really get good swings off of anyone in live BP. They actually hit Randy Johnson harder than anyone else I saw. It all depends on what the pitcher is working on. I can say that Borrell threw well in the intersquad yesterday, where he started for the team that had all the regulars on it. He was inconsistent, but threw with some impressive velocity and broke off a couple of decent breaking balls. Here are some other things about the intersquad:

Sean Henn: Looked awful. Has a really nice motion, but his control was awful. He started off walk, HBP, walk, and then he gave up some hard hits against lefties. Mel actually had to visit the mound.

Andy Phillips: Looked awesome. Four hits, hit the ball hard in his only out, and made two nice defensive plays. Very impressive.

Ferdin Tejada: Had maybe the worst day in the history of baseball. Did everything wrong you could do wrong.

Wang: Threw hard, but struggled. Command and control were shaky, and my goodness he works slowly.

Danny needs to log innings this season. Then we shall see where he's at. It's his fiorst season back from major arm surgery, so he may not be at peak performance, but hopefully he gets it back sooner rather than later. He was really getting there before he got hurt.

Saw Borrell pitch against the Tigers on Saturday. He looked good for his first start. Velocity was good 89-90 and the curve was real good. He did get behind in the count and paid for it on a couple batters but two of the four hits were infield hits. It was a good start for him.

He will still be in AAA for 2005. He needs to log innings, having been out for so long.

On a side note, Henn better have a few solid games now, otherwise he will get no shot at a relief slot. Not that he has a shot anyway, but a lefty who throws smoke always has a chance to open some eyes. But he is blowing it.

He got shelled today pretty badly. I don't have the line but it wasn't pretty. Maybe 3 runs in one inning. Maybe he should head to minor league camp.

Roster update: Left-hander Danny Borrell was reassigned to the Yankees' minor league camp after Friday's game. New York now has 48 players remaining in camp.
