Nice pickup for the Metropolitans. Someone edit Minky's name on the title...please.

Yeah, the bottom right hand side of ESPNEWS says "Red Sox to trade Mientkiewicz to Mets." I wonder who the Sox will get in return. Hopefully not much.

That's too bad. That's Roberts, Mientkiewicz, Reese and Kapler all gone -- none are surprises, as they wouldn;t have got much time, but they were good to have on the team.

Generally I'm not a big fan of rooting for an opponent to get "weaker" (it shouldn't matter - a champion beats all comers)...BUT...I dig the move from a Yankees perspective.

The Sox are a weaker team with Millar instead of the Guy With The Ball playing 1st. I keep waiting for Theo's "masterstroke" that's supposed to put the Red Sox entire off-season in perspective.

    Still waiting...

Edit - On a seperate note, can anyone explain to me why in the hell the Mets are kicking in cash to the Red Sox??

I agree they're weaker w/o him, though Millar is an offensive force when he gets hot. I'd rather have a defensive guy who hits a little less, personally.

Overall, I think their offseason has been about what could be expected. You knew they weren't going to get Beltran, and any big moves would have meant getting rid of big (e.g., Manny). I think their rotation is better, w/Wells and Clement versus Pedro and Lowe, and if Miller and/or Mantei prove healthy, either could be a huge boost.

I'm also guessing that they may again boost their defense with role guys at midseason, like they did last year.

    =======================

What I can't understand is why, since Doug made $3m+ last season, the Mets would be sending a snigle-A farmhand + cash? Wouldn't it be Boston to send the cash, since their guy costs more?

I have a feeling that it would've been KFC being shopped around had Dougie not decided to keep that ball.

You mean his value as a player? I thought that sending cash was strict spreadsheet economics.

Say you're a GM and I'm a GM. You've got a guy I like, so I trade you for him, sending some guys from the farm, or a straight-up trade for one guy. Since your guy makes $3m more than mine will once he hits the bigs, how would I send you cash?

Regardless of which team it was, I don't understand this move. Look at A-Rod for Soriano, as an exagerrated example. Alex obviously made more than Alfonso, so the Yanks being on the receiving end of cash seemed logical to me, even though I'm obviously biased.

SOSH reports that the sox got

    Ian Bladergroen

    Quote:

Tony from Albany asks: Who is this Ian Bladergroen guy in the Mets system? His numbers are awesome.

Bladergroen is hitting .337/.397/.598 for the Capital City Bombers in the Sally League. I receive questions about him twice a day it seems, so I figured I should answer. He is a left-handed hitting first baseman/DH with big-time power potential from the left side. His plate discipline is only adequate (25 walks, 52 strikeouts in 261 at-bats), and there are some concerns about his ability to make contact and work the count effectively against more advanced pitching. He hit .285/.354/.416 last year in the New York-Penn League, so his '04 numbers represent significant improvement.

Bladergroen was a 44th round draft-and-follow guy, out of a junior college in Colorado, picked in 2002 but not signed until the spring of 2003. He's a big guy at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, and at age 21 is neither young nor old for the Sally League. He doesn't have a great glove, but if he hits they will find a spot for him. We need to see how he holds up against pitchers who know what they are doing, but so far his career is off to a fine start.

    .342/.397/.595, 13 HR, 74 RBI, 55/25 K/BB, 1 SB in 269 AB for low Single-A Capital City

Bladergroen was on pace to lead the South Atlantic League in batting average and slugging percentage before tearing ligaments in his left wrist three months into last season. He’s already exceeded expectations after being drafted in the 44th round in 2002, surpassing Craig Brazell to become the Mets’ top first base prospect. Whether he really has a chance to become a regular will become clearer in the Florida State League this season.

While it will hurt Boston to not have his glove, I can understand Kevin or Doug not wanting to be a bench player.

I guess they really wanted to get rid of him. Previously there was talk of the sox wanting a top tier pitching prospect.

Good luck on the sox ever seeing "the ball" again, but i'm sure Lucchino will handle the situation with class.

Do the sox and mets play this year???

I don't think it had anything to do with really wanting to get rid of him. Even if there was talk of what the Sox wanted do you think they were actually going to get a top pitching prospect for a good glove, weak hitting first baseman? Minaya may not be bright, but he is not that dumb.

Sloane thinks he is. From today's Bergen Record:

"But as the final scramble to the finish line was conducted, Sloane already had banned Tony Bernazard and Jeff Wilpon from the dealings, leaving Minaya to try to make the final pitch."

Re: Redsox trade Mientkiewicz to the Mets

I don't know if the Red Sox could have gotten more for Minky, but they moved him because they didn't want to pay a backup first baseman $3.75 million. The move made sense, and I think Millar was the clear choice to stay because the Red Sox don't want to get too left handed in their lineup. They have 3 switch hitters in Damon, Bellhorn and Varitek, three lefties in Ortiz, Damon and Nixon, and now three righties in Manny, Millar and Renteria. If they went with Minky, they would be even more vulnerable against a good southpaw. This is largely a salary-clearing move, as they will make McCarty the late inning defensive first baseman at about $500,000. The Mets will get a top flight defensive first baseman, who has little power but has the ability to hit for a higher average than he has the last 2 seasons.

Correct. Damon is not a switch hitter.

FWIW- The Red Sox kept Millar for his "chemistry" along with his slugging percentage. He's really liked in the clubhouse (why I have no idea, but I've heard that from a number of people) and is very tight with Manny and David Ortiz. Those pesky intangibles.

The clubs looking at Millar were AL teams and the Red Sox didn't want to help a team in the division (Orioles).

Mientkiewicz had a little more trade value as well with who was left.

If Wade Miller is healthy, he's a solid #2. He started throwing last week and so far so good. (fingerscrossed)

They traded Minky rather than Millar because of a dispute over a ball?

The Red Sox made the decision a long time ago that Millar was a better player.

In their 14 biggest games of the season (the playoffs), Millar started 12 games, Ortiz started 2 (because there was no DH in St. Louis) and Mientkiewicz started 0.

Looks like two eye-test charts were swapped. Well, I'm glad to see the Mets get their first real defensive first baseman since they let John Olerud go, and the Red Sox continue to dismantle their World Champion squad. Few things more pleasant for a Yankee fan than seeing a ground ball go through or under Kevin Millar's or David Ortiz's glove!

I wouldn't hold my breath on Oriz at first, and Millar is an average first baseman on defense.

Based on the way Millar hit Yankee pitching last year (322 /.444/ .593/ 1.037), I didn't think you would be so anxious seeing him out there.

You're hoping that a reclaimation project works out so you have a decent number 2?

Okay, you guys are right...I have no idea why I'm so cynical towards Theo's off season.

Re: Redsox trade Mientkiewicz to the Mets

Dude, Miller cost $1.5m in guaranteed salary. Even if he's not a number 2, assuming he comes back healthy he's an absolute steal. Hell, for a number 4 that's a pretty good bargain. I think Theo misjudged with Varitek and Renteria, and as a Yankee fan I'm completely delighted that Wells is with the BoSox, but if Miller pitches to his potential he can easily outweigh all those decisions in importance. Plus Boston will have the inside track on Miller in 2006 and beyond.

If the Yankees had spent $2.5m for Miller we'd all be delighted, and rightly so. Boston spends less and it's dumb? Miller's been above average when healthy every year since 2001, and in 2001-2 he was excellent (31-12, ERA under 3.5, ERA+ over 130). He's only 28, too, so Boston could get his 28-32 years for a pittance. In my book, that's the steal of the offseason, for almost no risk. I'd rather have Miller than Wright, that's for damn sure - and we're on the hook for more than $20m for Wright over 3 seasons!

EDIT - I'm still amazed how many people are determined to run down Theo even when the facts are so blatantly stacked against them. Epstein's brought in David Ortiz, Bill Mueller, Mark Bellhorn, and Bronson Arroyo for less than the Yankees paid for 2 years of Jose Contreras. He's got his hands on Miller and Mantei for 2005, and I'll bet they're both better than league average this year. He's made his share of bad moves - I'm not convinced by any of his big spends this offseason - but is it so hard to admit, when the man's struck it rich four or fives times in quick succession, that he might know what he's doing? Are we that blinded by pinstripes that we've got to convince ourselves that Boston's GM is stupid in the face of actual, you know, results?

Getting paid for trading away a light-hitting first basemen when they had a glut is another good move, though hardly inspired (do you have to be to take advantage of Minaya)? Millar's annoying as hell, to some Sox fans as well as Yankees, but he can hit and won't disgrace the team in the field. (On TV, though . . . ) Plus I wonder if Youkilis can play 1st. Cheap, productive, and hopefully just un-Millar.

    Be seeing you,
