Minor Leagues

Sax's post regarding rosters got me thinking...

Regarding Minor League rosters:

Are we assuming that anyone who still qualifies to be on our Minor League roster and was on our Minor League roster at the end of the season, can be kept as a minor leaguer? With, I'd guess, most people keeping most of their minor leaguers from last year, this year's draft should be quick.

Is the minor league draft going to be during ST, or after OD? (The timing determines who can, and who can't, be kept in the minors...)

The plan from 2004 was that the minor league draft would be after the major-league draft. Owners can then choose to promote minor-leaguers to their major-league roster, opening up spaces for drafting in the minor-league draft. So I can keep Joe Blanton as a minor leaguer, call him up after the draft is over, and draft a new minor leaguer in his place.

So then during Spring Training or after Opening Day?

Because if Joe Blanton makes the major league roster, and we do the draft after OD, technically you can't keep him as a minor leaguer, because only people in the minors can be added to your minor league roster...

I'd suggest, because of this, to have the draft during ST. Especially since I assume most owners will keep most of their current minor leaguers. So even doing a thread-draft like last year, it should go rather quickly.

I wouldn't be adding Blanton to my minor leagues. He's already there; he's just not listed on Commissioner.com because the site doesn't carry over from year to year. Since he was on my minor league roster last year, and he's not lost rookie eligibility, I should be able to keep him there until I want to move him. When the major-league draft happens, he's already firmly sat in my farm system.

But a minor-league draft during ST is probably a good idea anyway - say a week or 10 days after the major-league draft.
