According to multiple sources, they have reached an agreement in principle with free agent Richie Sexson, the power-hitting first baseman/outfielder from Brush Prairie, Wash., and are also making an aggressive play to sign slugging first baseman Carlos Delgado or third baseman Adrian Beltre, the National League home-run champion.
In a startling break from their traditional reluctance to sign big-name free agents, the Mariners are believed to have offered somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 million to the three players. They are hoping to land two, and hope they will be the cornerstone of Seattle's recovery from a 99-loss season.
Sexson's deal — which sources say would be for more than the market-setting four-year, $45 million contract that third baseman Troy Glaus signed with Arizona — is contingent on his passing a physical examination. Therefore, it is not likely to be announced before the meetings conclude today.

Two team officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Seattle has reached a contract agreement with free agent first baseman Richie Sexson, one of the top prizes in this winter's free-agent class.
Sexson, who stands 6-feet-8 and bats right-handed, is a Northwest native. He was born in Portland and attended Prairie High School near Vancouver.
Contract terms were not immediately available, and the deal is contingent upon Sexson, coming off shoulder surgery, passing a physical. He made $8.6 million last year and was expected to get a four-year or possibly five-year deal at between $10 million and $15 million per year.

They apparently want Delgado to play 1B and Sexson to play LF. Personally, I think it makes more sense to have Delgado DH and Sexson play 1B.

that is a questionable signing
Is it against the rules to spell certain guys' names right? I'm glad Sexson didn't sign here, I would have gone crazy.
I don't understsand giving guys big contracts after they haven't played most of the prior season because they have been injured. How do you know what you are getting?
They were going to move Sexon to the outfield if they got Delgado.Originally posted by Moose35

I met Jacobsen at the AAA Home Run Derby that he won this year, seems like a good guy. Too bad he's like 27 or so and too old to still be considered a legitimate prospect. He could definitely help them off the bench this year though.Originally posted by WashingtonYankee

I want to make babies with Philip Hughes.
Carlos Delgado will be a Met not a Mariner. Supposedly the Mets put an offer 4 years 55 million.
