My pitcher could also play at another position pretty good if need be. Not Jimmy Williams good but good enough ...

There was a guy named Harry Howell on the 1903 Highlanders. This is the first I'm hearing of his name, but he came from Baltimore and went to St. Louis so I'm guessing he's the guy to whom you're referring.

    Charles Henry "Charlie" Pabor

On May 4, 1871, Charlie managed and played while batting 0-4 for in the first game of the season, which is considered the first all professional game ever played, a game between his Forest Citys and the Fort Wayne Kekiongas.

For its appropriateness to his power and grace: "The Yankee Clipper."

For its formidability: Stan (The Man) Musial. Although given MLB's behavior the last ten years, I would say that Stan has become the Forgotten Man. I was once amused by a reporter's irreverent "His Eminence, Stanley (Cardinal) Musial.

I always liked Elston Howard's borrowing of Sinatra's title, "Chairman of the Board," for Whitey Ford.

    Pasquel "Wrong Way" Perez
    Richey "Whitey" Ashburn
    CandyMan- John Candelaria
The Baby Bull - Leon Durham
    Gary "The Sarge" Matthews
    Hawk -Andre Dawson
Kid - Gary Carter (Would see him in the '80s wearing a bigassed diamond bracelet with this, so he had it before Ken Jr. did.)

Don't know how famous these nicks are; have heard their friends call them these:

    Joe "Sweet Pea" Morgan
    Tony "Doggie" Perez

Funniest I heard was Chris Berman: Rick "Junk" Mahler

    Thanks!

    Per Baseball Almanac ...

"(Joe) Giovannetti has a vast collection of anecdotes like that of 100-percent Cherokee pitcher, Ben Tincup, who as a 70-year-old pitching coach for the New York Yankees threw nine strikes out of ten pitches blindfolded from the mound." - Chace Bryson of Osprey Online

From other sources I've seen, Mr. Tincup was associated with the Yankees around 1960-1961. He was born April 14, 1893.

You crack me up! You were right with the little write.

Hey, I've got something to ask YOU about. Deals with the mlb site and who writes some of those articles ... with their baseball history facts ... and it has something to do with the departed Tom "Snake" Sturdivant being a part of -- but not about anything that was written by mlb in relation to his death.

You're right. And from what I understand, "Half Pint" Rye hit one to each field that inning!

In his brief major league career, "Half Pint" did not hit a home run in 39 at-bats while playing with the Red Sox. (1931) I think that season ended for him with an injury.
