    Juanma stops Penalosa!
    http://www.fightnews.com/?p=9873
WBO junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel ‘Juanma’ Lopez (25-0, 23 KOs) scored a brilliant ninth round TKO over WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Penalosa (54-7-2, 36 KOs) on Saturday night at the Coliseo Rubén Rodríguez in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. Lopez was superb as he outpunched a very motivated Penalosa for nine brutal rounds. Penalosa’s trainer Freddie Roach stopped the fight between rounds nine and ten. Lopez has now scored 13 consecutive knockouts.
Penalosa showed a lot of heart, but he took too many shots from Lopez. Lopez landed 70-80 power shots in 2 of the 9 rounds.

The Battle Between East and West: Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton Preview
    Bert Sugar: http://www.hbo.com/boxing/events/200...mns/sugar.html
    Compubox: http://www.hbo.com/boxing/events/200.../compubox.html

BB55's Take: It's speed vs. power in this matchup. Even though Hatton has the IBO and The Ring magazine Light Welterweight titles, Pacquiao is the favorite in this fight.

For Pacquiao to win, I expect him and Freddie Roach to use the same strategy he had against Oscar De La Hoya: using the right hand especially the right uppercut to set up the straight left through the center and keep the fight in the center of the ring and move away before Hatton closes the gap and does some inside brawling. Basically, if Pacquiao's back feels the ropes when Hatton's charging, move to the side and get away. If Hatton bullies the Filipino bomber, Pacquiao will be in trouble. Just like his fight with the late Agapito Sanchez, Pacquiao could be in trouble if he gets bullied inside. Also, throw some body shots and combinations from all angles at Hatton.

As for Hatton, he likes to bullrush and try to cut the distance for his clinches which leads to his potent body work. Let's not forget, this is Hatton's dominating weight class at 140 and only the third fight 135 and above for Pacquiao (Pacquiao started his career at 106). Former trainer Billy Graham helped the Briton with his charging and body punching, now let's see if Hatton has added his defense and combinations to set up his body punching along with his jab and head movement under the tutelage of Floyd Mayweather Sr. The jab could be key since Pacquiao has problems with taller fighters who use their jab frequently. Just ask Erik Morales and Juan Manuel Marquez. The problem for Hatton is that he had problems with southpaws before. Just ask Luis Collazo who used his speed to stifle Hatton.

I think will we see which fighter will be first in every exchange and which fighters movements and volume punching will be the difference. Some people in this board say that Pacquiao will destroy Hatton. Well, I think for that to happen, Pacquiao must keep the fight in the center of the ring and get away from Hatton's inside game early and often. Also, if Pacquiao can move to the side and trap Hatton to the corner or along the ropes like Floyd Mayweather Jr. did when the Manchester native charges forward and rain down blows, Hatton will have a bad night.

I think it will be a close fight since both fighters are in their primes and both like to brawl like crazy. It's a big test for both fighters, but with Pacquiao's all-around boxing skills, I think the Filipino will win his 6th title in his sixth different weight class in the end.

BB55's Prediction: Manny Pacquiao defeats Ricky Hatton by 11th TKO.

Weigh-Ins: Both Pacquiao and Hatton made weight
    http://www.fightnews.com/?p=10404
From the MGM Grand in Las Vegas: Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton made weight for their showdown tomorrow night. Pacquiao was 138; Hatton was 140.

I'm back: Floyd Mayweather Jr. plans to return to ring in July
    http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_yl...v=ap&type=lgns

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is back, ending his brief retirement from boxing.

The undefeated five-division champion plans to announce Saturday his return to the sport with a July fight against lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, a person close to the fight confirmed Friday night. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the fight hadn’t been officially announced.

How come boxing never utilizes undercards? I'm more of an MMA guy, but from what I saw all the undercard fights were one sided to build up the guy.

Further proof Pacquiao is the best pound for pound fighter in the world.

He also is going up there in terms of the all time greats.

    Re: Boxing, anyone?

I just came back from watching the Manny Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton fight and I gotta tell ya. I was really stunned.

I thought that the fight was going to go in the later rounds, but it ended with a flash.

I saw the Tale of the Tape and in my previews, I stated it was speed vs. power. Manny had the edge in speed and footwork while Ricky has the edge in power.

However, it was Pacquiao who overpowered Hatton with his power especially his right hook.

Hatton was the aggressor, but Pacquiao used his footwork to set up his punches that earned him those two knockdowns in Round 1.

In Round 2, it was the same Ricky 'Hitman' Hatton under Billy Graham: aggressive, but careless. He kept his hands down, which set up Pacquiao's left hook and knocks the Briton out cold.

Well, it looks the winner between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez will be next for the Filipino and either way, it's a huge win for the fans.

Congratulations, Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao, a six-time World Champion in six different weight classes, joining Oscar De La Hoya as a recognized six-time champion in six different weight classes.

    Four Major World Titles
    * WBC world flyweight champion
    * IBF world super bantamweight champion
    * WBC world super featherweight champion
    * WBC world lightweight champion

    Two Minor (Linear) World Titles
    * World featherweight champion
    * World light welterweight champion
    - Both titles from Ring Magazine

He's also the Fifth boxer to win six world titles in six different weight classes joining De La Hoya, Tommy Hearns, Hector 'Macho' Camacho, and James Toney.

As for Hatton, let's hope he's okay.

A lot of boxing experts including Larry Merchant compared Manny Pacquiao to Henry Armstrong in the mid-to-late 1930s when Armstrong won three World Titles in three different weight classes in a 2-year span.

    Armstrong was a featherweight champion October 29, 1937 – Sept 12, 1938, then moved up and became a welterweight champion May 31, 1938 – October 4, 1940, and finally a lightweight champion August 17, 1938 – August 22, 1939.

The Pacman is now a six-time World Champion in six different weight classes.

And every Filipino glues their eyes on their TV sets to see Manny Pacquiao fight.

I would regard the lineal championships as the "major" world championships while seeing the alphabet soup title trinkets as the "minor" championships.

Pacquiao is now the first boxer in history to have won a major, lineal championship in 4 different weight divisions: flyweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, and junior welterweight.

De La Hoya, Armstrong, Mayweather, and probably a few others I forgot are all tied for second with 3 lineal championships apiece.

Hatton camp was fine, Hatton just decided to attack Pacman instead of box him. Floyd snr even told him after the 1st round to calm down.

They rpobably changed their minds because they realized that they had commonn sense.

Ricky Hatton did the same tactics he used against Floyd Mayweather Jr: aggressive and bully instead of boxing.

I didn't see any improvement on his defense. Hatton kept his hands down, swing wildly, and no head movement.

I hope this sets the stage for Mayweather-Pacquiao. I'm sure there will be some annoyingly long negotations that have to occur before that fight gets made, though.

I can't see any other reason why Floyd would come back. And I think Ricky Hatton might still be on the canvas. WOW what a knockout. That was a heavyweight style knockout, a Tyson in his prime KO. How a guy who came into the pro game at 108 can hit that hard in incredible. Pac is special.

Maybe pbf should have just stayed retired. I don't know how he's going to be able to duck out of fighting pacquiao now, like he did most every other major fight against good competition, without looking like the ass he is.

    He should've stayed retired.

Before the fight, I love how Mosley, De la Hoya..etc., was whispering sweet nothings in Hatton's ear. His main problem was once he stepped into the ring he let his ego take control and forgot about his game plan.
When he fell to the canvas, it looked like he was going to be wheeled out on a stretcher.

Arum suggested that it might happen this winter, but I think it's more of a negotiating ploy to get Floyd to fight.

    Re: Boxing, anyone?

    Who's next for the Pac-Man?
    http://www.ringtv.com/blog/637/whats...mazing_pacman/

One unfortunate aspect of Manny Pacquiao’s one-punch knockout of Ricky Hatton on Saturday was that it lasted less than six minutes. We witnessed greatness and we want more.

On top of that, we have to wait at least six months to see Pacquiao do his thing again. It’s not fair. But that’s how boxing is; its biggest stars fight only twice a year.

So, for the next few months we get to speculate who Pacquiao’s next victim … er, opponent will be. And there are several intriguing possibilities.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, envisions this: His fighter faces the winner of the July 18 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez and then takes on Shane Mosley. All three are future Hall of Famers.

And make no mistake: After Pacquiao’s sensational performance Saturday, those fighters and others will be lining up for a shot at the Filipino icon because of the increasing amount of money he is able to generate.

There are weight issues, though. Pacquiao fights best at 140 pounds, the weight class at which he fought Saturday. “I feel very strong at 140 pounds; I want to stay there,” Pacquiao said shortly after his demolition of Hatton.

Mayweather and Mosley are natural welterweights (147) or even bigger. Marquez, who drew and lost in two fights with Pacquiao, could fight at 140 but is given little chance of beating Mayweather.

Mosley reportedly offered to fight Pacquiao at 147 immediately after the fight but Roach made it clear that Pacquiao is going to make the rules.

“You know what, we fight at 140,” Roach said. “These guys are going to have to meet in the middle somewhere (143? 144?). Everyone wants to fight Manny Pacquiao now. He’ll make you money.”

It might be difficult for the bigger men to get that done. Mayweather hasn’t fought below welterweight since he knocked out Arturo Gatti at 140 in 2005. Mosley last dipped below that mark when he stopped John Brown way back in 1999.

Still, the opportunity to face the hottest fighter in the world for very big money could be enough of an incentive for Mayweather and Mosley to come down in weight.

However, Roach wonders whether Mayweather would have the courage to fight his man. He also threw out Miguel Cotto as another possible opponent.

“Mayweather could’ve fought Manny (in his comeback fight),” said Roach, referring to the announcement Saturday that Mayweather would face Marquez on July 18. “He just had to wait one day. I think he’s scared of Manny. … We’re not going to wait around. I like to keep Manny busy. A busy fighter is a good fighter. I’d like to fight in November or December.

“If Cotto wants to come down a few pounds, we can make that happen. If Shane Mosley wants to come down a few pounds, we can make that happen.”

I'd pick Pacquiao over Cotto at catchweight.

I think Shane's too strong and has too good of a chin for Pacquiao. I'd pick Shane in that one.

Ive always loved Pac and his style. I got nervous for him when he went up in
weight to fight DLH and even a little bit for Hatton.

But he has the power to hang in that weight, and his style is just too much for the bigger boys.

For anyone that didn't watch the Brian Kenny-Floyd Mayweather interview, I'd suggest doing it. Firstly, it's a great interview. Secondly, Brian feels exactly as I do in terms of Floyd. And Thirdly, he makes his feelings known.

I saw the interview Taylor and I gotta tell ya, every time Brian Kenny says the word, "Pacquiao" as in the current P4P king Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. really didn't answer the question.

PBF never fought a true WW: Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Paul Williams in 2007, Antonio Margarito.

I respect PBF's skills, but not his mouth. This is a hilarious interview.

BK: "Why not face the winner of the Pacquiao fight?"

PBF: "I just answered your question"

    Then I liked this part:

BK: "Nobody's beaten you yet Floyd."

    And at the end:

PBF: "And when I beat him (Pacquiao) what they going to say? Floyd is bigger than him... All these excuses."

BK: "Full credit to you if you beat him, and for Marquez too, who is a true lightweight champion."

Good job Brian Kenny! I respect Floyd's skills but the other top skilled boxers like Hopkins and Winky Wright fought whoever whenever. They took on dangerous opponents like Jermaine Taylor, Trinidad and Pavlik. PBF was fighting guys like club fighter Arturo Gatti, an over the hill Hoya, and a clearly overrated Ricky Hatton. PBF could have done fights with any of the top welterweights and never did.

    News link

MANILA, Philippines – As early as January, right after his stunning knockout of Antonio Margarito, WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley said he wanted to face Manny Pacquiao.

“I want the one with the most money,” he was quoted as saying.

But some issues with the weight came up. Pacquiao’s trainer, Freddie Roach, dared Mosley to come down to 142. Mosley said he won’t or can’t fight lower than 145.

Yesterday, however, Mosley, one of the oldest champions out there, aired his change of heart, telling fightnews.com that he’s ready to take on Pacquiao.

    Now.

“There are conflicting reports from the Pacquiao camp an upcoming fight between me and Manny Pacquiao. I want it to be known that I want to fight Pacquiao and I want to fight him now,” Mosley was quoted.

“I’m willing to meet at a catch weight to make that happen. I know this is what Freddie Roach wants as well, as he has previously stated this to press,” he said.

A catch weight could mean 143 lbs, give and take. But whether or not Mosley’s 147 lb title would be at stake is a different matter. What’s important to him is the fight.

“I am the best fighter in boxing and I am ready to reclaim the title of number one pound-for-pound fighter,” said Mosley who showed the quickness of a fighter 10 years younger when he stunned Margarito.

Pushing 38, Mosley is seven years older, and at 5-foot-9, almost three inches taller than Pacquiao, the reigning pound-for-pound champion and the sport’s biggest draw today.

Arum has penciled Oct. 17 as the date of Pacquiao’s next fight -- whoever, wherever.
Looks like this fight is most likely going to happen this year.

I can't wait for Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey this Saturday night on HBO WCB.

They both lost to 'The Tijuana Tornado' Antonio Margarito and both beat Zab Judah.

Both have a lot of power and are accurate. Should be a good one.

Compubox Analysis: Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey, WBO Welterweight Title
    http://www.hbo.com/boxing/events/200.../compubox.html

I say Cotto by TKO 10th round. Both Cotto and Clottey are deadly heavy, accurate punchers, but I think the Puerto Rican in front of the Madison Square Garden crowd (with Rui in the stands), will edge the Ghanaian in a tough fight to call.

    Re: Boxing, anyone?

    Wow!

What a slobberknocking slugfest from the World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden, in New York City tonight.

Miguel Cotto sends the MSG crowd before Puerto Rican day happy with a split decision win over tough luck Joshua Clottey to retain the WBO Weltwerweight title.

I agreed with Miguel Ángel Cotto winning the fight, but I disagreed with the judges scoring from one of the three judges. Don Trella had it 116-111 for Cotto?! I agree with John McKaie 115-112 for Cotto and Tom Miller had it 114-113 for Clottey where the fight could've gone either way.

I had it 115-112 for Cotto based on the knockdown in Round 1 and landing the cleaner shots in Rounds 11 and 12 while backing up when the Ghanaian fighter stalked him, but didn't throw as much.

Anyways, it was a great fight for both. Cotto persevered despite getting a nasty cut on his left eyelid in Round 3 due to an accidental headbutt.

I had Rounds 1-3 for Cotto, but Clottey to his credit didn't give up. He won Round 4. Cotto won Rounds 5 and 6. Clottey slipped in Round 5 and had a twisted left knee. But the Ghana fighter didn't quit. He kept throwing bomb after bomb after bomb while pushing forward and exposing Cotto's cut eyelid in Rounds 7, 8, 9, and 10. In the last two rounds of the fight, Cotto landed a clean punch and moved away. Clottey kept coming forward, but didn't throw a lot of punches.

Poor Clottey, he does have the toughest luck in the world. Clottey lost to Carlos Baldomir due to a controversial disqualification for a headbutt. Against 'The Tijuana Tornado' Antonio Margarito, he lost another close decision where both of his hands were tired. And now tonight against Cotto where Clottey was the more aggressor fighter and landed more shots in a higher connect percentage. But with Cotto knocking him down in Round 1 and landing the cleaner blows in Rounds 11 and 12, that give the Puerto Rican a little more extra to get the decision going his way.

Still though, what a fight between these two.

What's next for Cotto? A date with Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.? Or maybe a second fight with 'Sugar' Shane Mosley Who knows?

I think this fight tonight is the favorite for Fight of the Year 2009. I don't know if Rui was in MSG tonight, but I think his voice was gone after seeing the oohing and awing in this back and forth contest.

Great fight last night. I saw Michael Buffer walk out with this 20 year old broad. LOL.

I had it 114-112 Clottey scoring it live. 116-111 for Cotto was a paid card.

I really don't know how Don Trella scored it 116-111 for Miguel Cotto. What fight was he watching?

I got a question. Fight of the Year in 2009 so far?

Or is it Andre Berto vs. Luis Collazo or Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz?

So much for the 'Cash Cow' that is Floyd Mayweather Jr.

One of the comments from the FightHype article:
"Sources tell Maxboxing that no more than 3,000 tickets were sold, and ticket brokers weren't exactly rushing to put in orders. It's difficult to have a secondary market when there isn't much of a demand for the event to begin with. Not only was this fight seen as a physical mismatch in many circles, the tickets (which ranged from $1,000 to $150) seemed a bit pricey, particularly in this current economy." GOLDEN BOY SHOULD LEARN FROM TOP RANK
    http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content5119.html

    I like reading this article.
It's like a little Pound-4-Pound tournament if Top Rank finalizes Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao and Oscar De La Hoya gets on with Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Shane Mosley.

I like these combinations both winner vs. winner and loser vs. loser.

    - Pacquiao vs. Mosley
    - Pacquiao-Marquez 3 to settle their disputed first two fights
    - Cotto-Mosley 2
    - Cotto-Marquez in another Mexico vs. Puerto Rico boxing war

Those four fight for money and titles. Not Pretty Boy Floyd who fights for money and ducks quality opponents especially in his own weight class.

    Pacquiao-Cotto fight deal nears completion
    http://globalnation.inquirer.net/ceb...ars-completion

What I am hearing is that the fight will be at a catchweight around 145 pounds, and it will be a 65-35 or 70-30 split in favor of Manny Pacquiao.

Since Floyd Mayweather Jr's fight with Juan Manuel Marquez was rescheduled for September 19th, I still think PBF is running.

Even with PBF's rib injury, I think Dinamita has a shot to beat PBF.

I agree. I think PBF realized when he got back into training that perhaps he had bitten off more than he wanted to chew. JMM is probably the toughest fighter PBF will have faced, except maybe Castillo.
