Sox make Pedro similar offer to Schilling

The Globe is reporting the Sox have made Pedro a similar offer to what Schilling currently has - $25.5M for two years and $13M option for 07 and $2M in performance bonuses. He is inclined to test the market so I can't see him accepting that before Boston's exclusive window closes.

Not a bad starting offer, he'll prob end up with another year and a couple million more when he does sign. He should be pleased with this offer and he is certainly comparable to Schilling so this is def a fair place to start.

If he opts to test the market, that's fine, but he will have lost any credibility should he go elsewhere and complain down the road that the Sox didn't want to keep him. That is a very fair offer, and I would think many players would take a fair offer to stay with this team.

I don't see how you can turn down 25 million in guaranteed money. Why would he leave anyway, he's a hero in Boston. Outside of a larger Dominican community I don't see what we could give him that Boston can't.

I agree, he said that if he doesn't stay it is because management didn't want to keep him. Well, I think that the Sox made a fair deal and it is up to him, the thing about this Sox management is they seem to make the first offer essentially THE offer, which is smart in that when guys reject it they can't say that they were insulted.

The only thing I think Pedro may not like about the offer is the years. Two years isn't much, and Pedro probably won't feel "respected" with such a short-term contract.

Its not that I don't think that's a "fair" offer, because I do. But if someone offers him 3 guaranteed years at roughly the same price it will be pretty hard to complain that he wasn't loyal. He's an aging pitcher who might very well be at the end of his production years. As reasonable as it is to understand Boston's trepidation with signing him for too many years its also pretty easy to understand his desire to get a little more insurance.

That being said, a reasonable compromise would seem to be to guarantee a 3rd year at less than $13 million ($10?) plus a little more in performance bonuses and then a 4th year option with with the bonuses. I think a deal like that would more test the loyalty on both sides asking for some compromises/risk from both.

But me and the business side of baseball have never really clicked...

That is a very reasonable offer. Pedro will likely accept it, IMO.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say he'll use Steinbrenner to try to scare Boston into a better offer, it won't work, and he'll end up signing with Boston for pretty much what's been offered.

I wouldn't say he was disloyal -- I would just say that any negative remarks he might make afterwards would be unfounded.

If he wants, and gets, a 4 year deal, more power to him. Thanks for your work, and the Sox can use the $17mm they paid him last year to sign a free agent or 2 while cutting their payroll, too.

Agreed on all counts. He should jump on the offer and I would be shocked if he didn't stay with Boston. I think it's nice for the fans when players opt to stay with their team even when they can possibly make more money elsewhere. He seems to love it there so my guess is he is back with Boston next season.

I could see that become the sticking point. It will be interesting to see how much Boston wants to avoid it and how much that 3rd year means to Pedro.

Seems like a fair and reasonable offer. That combined with the good vibes Pedro is feeling in Boston these days I think he'll accept. At least I hope he does, and quickly, because the sooner he signs, the sooner George will stop lusting after him, the sooner we can start looking at other viable alternatives. I don't think think the front office should waste a lot of time courting him. (I can picture Pedro dragging it out just to toy with the Yankees )

The team that really has the best chance in signing Pedro after Boston is Anaheim.

I dont think Pedro is gonna get any better offer than that . I dont see any team risking a contract bigger than 3 yrs on him .

I agree! Even if we signed Pedro and won the WS, do you think I want to hear Sox fans crying that the only reason we won was because we stole Pedro from them. Doesn't matter if he missed half the year with an injury, either.

It would be almost as bad as when Colorado traded for the Bruins' Ray Bourque (hockey) so that he could win a Cup and then after he did, they were posting the Boston Bruins team picture on the Internet with Bourque in an Avalanche uniform holding the Cup high in the air as though the Bruins won it.

We would get the same treatment. A Yankee team picture with the World Series trophy and Pedro inserted in there in a Red Sox uniform as though he was the reason we won it. No thanks!
Rocky Colavito was a colorful ballplayer that I would love to see in the Hall of Fame. He had a rifle of an arm and hit 374 lifetime home runs, none of them with a corked bat, either. He finished his career as a member of the New York Yankees and retired the same year as Mickey Mantle.

After committing $146 million to add Vladimir Guerrero, Jose Guillen, Bartolo Colon and Kelvim Escobar a year ago, Moreno reportedly would like to reduce the Angels' payroll from $112 million to somewhere below $100 million, perhaps even as low as $90 million.

You have our plan all wrong.

When you win the World Series next year, Pedro will be pitching the deciding game for you. Then, with two outs in the 9th, he will rip open his Yankee jersey to reveal a full Red Sox uniform underneath. He'll get the last out, and the Boston front office will immediately claim another World Series triumph. Selig will uphold it, as he always approves shady deals with the Red Sox and hates the Yankees. Then, the Sports Illustrated DVD for the World Series will have Red Sox players superimposed onto the DVD, replacing Yankee players, to further solidify this travesty of justice.

I know for a fact that Anaheim has already contacted Pedro's agent and are going to go after him hard.

I'm also told Pedro won't go to the Yankees. Let's call it a "source familiar with Pedro's thinking". Who the hell knows when money comes into play though.

Why would re-signing Pedro, even "overpaying," leave the Sox w/o any $? He's going to make less next year than he did this year.

Actually, in case you care, Bs fans didn't feel at all as if the Bruins won -- we were, however, extremely happy (an understatement, really) for Bourque, who had b/c one of the most beloved sports figures in Boston history. Friends who are big hockey fans were actually in tears b/c they were so happy for the guy -- but they would have taken a Bruins Cup in a heartbeat given the choice.

My cousin and I used to get ideas like that all the time. We concluded we watched far too much wrestling. I cut down my wrestling watching to 1/3rd what it was before, and goodness, I no longer get such funny ideas. Would I be out of line in suggesting maybe such creative geniuses as Pat Patterson and Vinnie Mac influenced you imagination?

But you need to have Jim Ross doing the announcing, and saying, "Oh, my God" and sounding all upset, and then have Pedro say "We shocked the world!" like they do in pro wrestling. Wait a minute -- Kevin Millar already used that phrase this year. Scratch that.

Man, no one was trying to act like the Bruins won the cup. We were all extremely happy for Ray. If anything that picture was showing that we know Ray will always be a Bruin no matter what jersey he wears.

Not even close to the same thing as Pedro potentially pitching for a Yankee championship.

Gee, I hadn't even thought of wrestling, but now that you say it I was a fanatic in my younger days.

Maybe (hmmm, who is hated by the Yankees?...) Curt Schilling, seated in the stands and on crutches for a supposed ankle injury, snaps his cast off (it's fake!!!!) and sprints onto the field and KOs Derek Jeter with it. Then Don Zimmer, also in the stands, sneaks onto the field and blindsides Pedro with a folding chair, getting the revenge he's wanted for over a year!!!

There. That's better. Thanks for the inspiration guys.

Didn't everybody seem to stop watching around then? They were much better when they were still the WWF, and had WCW to compete with. Although I still think it would be cool for a Yankee pitcher to come in to Stone Cold's theme music. If Kevin Brown had come in to that for Game 7 of the ALCS, there's no way he could have lost that game!

Actually I don't know that it would. Angels are set to lose Glaus ($10.45), Perceival ($7.8) and Sele ($8.6) to free agency and don't look like they'll be re-signing them. Add in that they seem to be a sure bet to trade Guillen ($2.2) and have a wealth of youth they want to play and it seems like adding $12-15 million would keep them round about $90-100 million.

Of course there is talk of them wanting a CFer but that could mean anything from Carlos Beltran to Andruw Jones to Vernon Wells to who knows.

anybody heard speculation about where Glaus is going (if he doesn;t return -- if the Angels don't sign him, who plays 3rd for them?)

Dallas McPherson will be their 3B next year.

If the Dodgers lose Beltre, I think either Glaus or Koskie will a Dodger. I could also see the Orioles or Mets signing Glaus if he is willing to move to 1B.

Thank Moreno they aren't interested in Percival... its about time to let a badass young stud like K-Rod get an opportunity to close. He's already one of the best just from getting the title.
