A Plea To Yankee And Sox Fans -- For Maturity

    Do the following sound familiar?:

"Hey, we're better than you are!!!"

"NO, WE"RE better than YOU are!!!"

"Our fans behave better than your fans!!!"

"NO, OUR fans behave better than YOUR fans!!"

    "Our players have more class!!"

"NO, OUR players have more class!!!"

    &po'd& &po'd& &po'd& &po'd& &po'd& &po'd&

CAN ALL OF THE 12 YEAR OLDS ON THIS SITE PLEASE GROW UP???????????

If you're a fellow Sox fan, how about concentrating on savoring the greatest sports moment in your life instead of classlessly dragging the Yankees and their fans down. It's childish. This is about YOU winning, not the Yankees losing. Look at your shoulder -- there's no chip there anymore. We won this year. Act like you deserve to be a winner.
    Act like an adult.

If you're a Yankee fan, your team lost in embarrassing fashion to Boston. Deal with it. Let a group of fans and an organization that has suffered for 86 years have a little fun for once in their lives. Be gracious losers instead of whining about how you don't think a guy in Boston can mow a lawn with as much class or as well as a guy from New York. You sound ridiculous.

And if you are mature and don't act like either of the two above groups, I apologize to you -- and THANK YOU for being the way you are.

Can we talk about baseball now????

    Nice post.

Us Yankees fans get very upset when the players on another team do things like what the Sox players do.

Holding up anti-Yankees signs, egging on the fans, the fans chanting anti-Yankees crap at a parade for their first WC since 1918. Celebrate!! Don't worry about another team.

That's what fans get al riled up about. Yankees fans chant Sox suck at the games between the teams, and no where else. It's annoying, 20- minutes after WS Game 4, to go the quad here a t QU, and to hear "F--k the Yankees." That's really annoying

    I agree 100%...

I just think some us Sox fans aren't used to being ontop. We're not in 2nd place anymore, alot of us don't know how to feel just yet. Although i disagree with some of the Yankee fans who think there were 3.5 million people chanting Yankee suck, most of the people at the parade weren't even thinking about the Yankees, it was mostly the retarded college students. You know... the ones who rioted after the ALCS like morons. Arguing over who's fans or players have more class or players smack talking will go no where. No one is going to look at it objectively... i just hope it would end.

This is where the Sox and their fans could have shone brightly in our eyes. I'd have sent thousands of kudos. But, I can't and won't be a hypocrite and pretentious. I don't regret saying things that I said after what happened. If that's 12 year old behavior, fine...then I'm a 12 year old

You are SO on the money, Steve. I don't think after we won the WS in '99, Yankee fans were chanting "Red Sox suck". It's just rude and immature. You're there to celebrate your team's victory, not piss on the fans of a team or that team itself.

Our fans are classier when we make threads calling for class.

    Nice post.

John Henry stated after the ALCS that he would like the rivalry to have less animosity, hopefully someday that will happen. I can't see it happening any time soon however.

I would publicly like to thank you on the open board for your PM after the ALCS and WS.

It comes down to this. Red Sox and Yankee fans are the same. They are passionate, crazy, diehard fans. They love their team and live for the day the equipment truck heads for Florida once their season is over.

Sadly, the intended audience won't be found here or on Sox boards for the most part but I definitely agree with what you said.

The inferiority complex is now over. The references to the Yankees are the celebrations of exactly that fact. The Yankee fans didn't have to invoke the Red Sox on their victory parade because their team didn't have a history of decades of losing to them in the most crucial games, as the Red Sox have of the Yankees. The Yankee fans didn't have to invoke the Red Sox on their victory parade because they didn't have to watch the Red Sox win 26 championships since they last tasted a championship. I assure you if the shoe were on the other foot, the reaction would be similar.

86 years of frustration is a long time. The Yankees have been to the World Series 6 of the past 9 years. The Red Sox have been to the World Series 5 times in the last 86 years.

Now, the tables have finally turned. For once, it wasn't the Red Sox who choked. It was the Yankees. In fact, the biggest collapse in the history of sports. For once, the Red Sox won the World Series and not the Yankees. It's like a bizarro world, where everything is backwards. And you see the exhuberace over this drastic and surprising turn of events spilling all over the streets of Boston.

That would be all well and good if you played the Yankees in the World Series. Was the World Series just incidental to the celebration? "Hey, it's a good thing we won the World Series, because we already had this VICTORY PARADE planned and everything."

I can tell you every team we played in the WS, but I would be hard pressed to remember every team we played in the playoffs before then. I bet ten years from now, a lot of Red Sox fans won't even remember the Cardinals, but they'll remember the Yankees, and to me, that is WEIRD.

In fairness, I'm having trouble remembering the Cardinals right now.

John Henry will not get his wish because the media will not let it happen. This is their creation. It has become a huge moneymaker and they are going to do anything to keep it rolling. It sells papers and increases ratings. They say it is good for baseball. How? Ratings and Advertising $. Sorry for the rant but I'm so sick of how pervasive it has gotten that fans, players, even owners talk trash. Can we please play nice.

I would be surprised if most Yankee fans won't remember the victory over the Sox in 2003 and Boone's series ending home run.

I love this rivalry and i think it's great for the sport. There is awesome competiton on the field year in and year out. No other sport crushes you the way it did to me in 99 or 03 and causes such a feeling of joy as i felt this year.It was great to feel like a kid again at the parade today I must say. It would be so much better though if the fans did have a bit more class on both sides. However, it is not the long time fans that are the ones doing the anti-fan thing, as I have seen first hand here at school it is mostly students and newcomers to the rivalry that carry on with the "Yankees Suck" and "Boston Sucks" etc...It should be clear to anyone that knows baseball that out of the 2 teamss in the ALCS, neither "sucks". This fan is enjoying the greatest moment of his sports fan life and looking forward to both teams over spending on free agents again this winter to one-up each other. Go Sox!

Yeah but we didn't win the World Series. To us, that was our last series win and we will remember that.

I for one do not remember the teams we played when we won against Atlanta in '96, against San Diego in '98, etc. etc.

And the only reason why I know we were against the Sox in ALCS '99 is because Fox won't shut up about it. But before this year, I didn't know that and I just know that we beat Atlanta then.

    Totally different contexts...

On a related topic, I was watching the Georgia/Florida game this afternoon, and the Gators were down by about 2 touchdowns late in the game, and one of the announcers pondered aloud whether they could come back and win. Just as expected, the other announcer chimed in and said, "You mean like the Red Sox? It can happen you know!" I about threw the TV out the window. I can't even watch college football anymore without that miserable series being forced down my throat. I have a gut feeling that if the Yankees came back from 0-3 against the Sox, people wouldn't be talking about it. Because it was the Sox doing it against the Yankees, somehow it means more. I just don't get that.

If that was reason then why didn't Yankee fans chant "Mariners suck" at the parade in 2000 after avenging the 1995 crushing defeat? We will always be in the Sox fans minds no matter what happens.

I have imagined it being the other way around, and you are exactly correct. Which is why I have been taking alot of sh*t talk recently with no problem. Yeah, when I watch the Patriots celebration I hear "Yankees Suck!" chants, and I'm not gonna lie it pisses me off. But I understand why and I know I'd be doing it too. For every reason you described in your post. And for others who call Sox fans as die-hard as Yanks fans. I know this. That's why this rivalry is so fun.

As for the origional post, Steve, good job, but I think one thing you're missing is that different people have their own fun with the rivalry. You gotta respect how everyone handles it. While childish digs at eachother can get annoying, that's how they're enjoying this. It's the greatest rivalry in sports and you're talking about two large, insanely loyal cities who hate the other one's team. it's expected, at least IMO.

Get used to it. That's how it's going to be from now on.

That's why when we had the poll at ITL about whether 2001 or 2004 was a worse defeat, I was flabbergasted at all the people naming 2001. I don't think they fully understood just how huge a reference point this year's ALCS is destined to be.

The fact that now in any sport, that absolute ass-kicking will be referenced ad nauseam is enough to make me swear off sports until April. I would be watching my Red Wings right now, but the damn players union had to go on strike. Who knows if there'll be hockey at all this season.

Being an Islanders fan, hockey is a sustainable loss for me.

Actually, our local Fox Sports Network station has been filling some of the time by showing Islander playoff games from the early 1980s, when they were THE TEAM. It's actually much more entertaining than watching the current Isles.

Thank you; there was no need, though I do appreciate it. What I expressed was heartfelt and I genuinely feel good for you guys. My sentiments today might have contradicted that, but I assure you that I do feel you guys deserve this day.

You know, after the Sox won, I wasn't as frustrated as I thought I'd be for a number of reasons. One, I think it's about f'n time a great baseball city like Boston - one of the two greatest in this world - got your just rewards. Secondly, as I mentioned in another thread, I actually put myself in your shoes and felt the sentiments - your deceased loved ones who never got the opportunity to witness what you guys just did. Like I said in that post, I had visions of every Sox fan looking up to the sky, with joy running through their entire body and tears running down their cheeks, saying, "We did it pops...mom...sis...brother." I know it sounds hokey, but I'm sure I'm not too far off.

As for my knee jerk this afternoon, in a selfish sense, I wanted to like your players, perhaps to ease whatever frustrations I might have had over my team pretty much being THAT close but no cigar. It was tough as you can probably attest to with all YOUR close calls in the past. It's a lot easier to deal with if your team took the high road 100%. I know that was wishful thinking, but for one second put yourselves in our shoes. Imagine the Sox losing as we did and right after we took it, A-Rod started dissing your guys as Curt seems to relish in. Picture Sheff rubbing it in at the parade by waving an Ortiz banner that mocked him. Better yet, picture a few Reggie Jacskons on our team shooting off their mouths ad nauseam. I'm not ready to jump off a bridge, but certain things did evoke a reaction from me.

I'd bet that you guys had a hard time disliking out team from 1996-2000 from Torre on down and it probably made us easier to bear.

I'm rambling, but I want to close by saying I'm sorry for making today's temporary frustration public. Did me no good and might have brought the good Sox fans down. I'd rather you guys savor this.....it only comes every century or so.

And you see the exhuberace over this drastic and surprising turn of events spilling all over the streets of Boston.
And it will only be a matter of time before the rest of the U.S. will get sick of the countless Sox coverage on all the sports channels. I'm willing to bet that next year, if the Sox and the Yankees are in the postseason again, there will be a significantly lesser number of non-Boston folk who'll be rooting for the Sox. There's no more underdog role to fill. Everyone will be rooting for the Cubs next season.

Good. I'm sick of these bandwagon fans like Jimmy Fallon and Tom Hanks jumping on board because its the cool thing to do. I hate it.

And there were some fans chanting Yankees Suck at the parade today. But I was there, and literally, noone over the age of 18 chanted it. I'm 17 myself, and I actually called some kids around my age out on it. I told them to chant pro Red Sox since we just won the World Series, and who cares about the Yankees? They just gave me a dirty look and went to another spot. Stupid bandwagoners.

Dooley, in no way was I specifically referring to you alone. I noted your thread, but my rant was directed at a whole bunch of different posts I have read lately, not just yours.

I'm not perfect either. I've said some things here I've later regretted, and I've committed the very sins I am condemning a few times. But we all just need to stop this Groundhog Day thing where every day this theme of "We're better _____ than you are" continues.

Dooley, you and I get along great, and 95% of the time I understand your position well. No harm, my friend.

Hey, bud, was never anything personal on my end or directed your way as well. You happen to be one of the guys I was genuinely happy for.

    Two things about that:

    * When FOX saw them sitting together, who did they interview first? Geez, I would choose Tom Hanks, considering that he's got two Oscars and all. But no, FOX interviews the unfunniest SNL Weekend Update anchor ever first! Which brings me to my next point:

    * As a Sox fan, what did you think about them filming the end of Jimmy Fallon's new movie at the end of Game 4? That's why Fallon and Drew Barrymore were kissing on the field -- because it's going to be the end of their new movie, about an obsessive Sox fan. And guess which media conglomerate is producing the movie? FOX!

Fallon's a lifelong Sox fan from Massachussetts, along with his former castmate Seth Meyers...............

I hardly think they are bandwagoners, as for Tom Hanks, i got no clue

Actually Fallon grew up in NY and was a lifelong Yankee fan until he began filming this movie. Seth Myers is a lifelong Boston fan, so I have no problem with him. Fallon and his phony Boston accent have really gotten on my nerves, and I will not go see his movie.

Really I never knew that. He always played a kid that loved Nomar on SNL, for years..........

So he stopped being a Yankee fan for good during the filming?

Really...did you think George Clooney was a real doctor too?

Just kidding...I know alot of people probably thought he was from Boston due to those skits, but they just had him do that because he has a "good" Boston accent. (Good meaning overexaggerated and therefore funny to people not from Boston.)

I'm guessing that probably depends on how the Yankees do next year...

Fallon is so full of himself - always posing, running his hand through his hair to hear 2 lady audience members scream etc. I always thought his humor was too forced.

Heh, Seth was on SNL tonight with Johnny Damon. He had a huge smile on his face. I love Seth. His Red Sox-centric parts on Weekend Update are always hilarious.

Fallon is not a Yankees fan. He appears to be a fan of whatever team is hosting the baseball game he is at:

Jimmy Fallon: I grew up in Saugerties, upstate NY. I was never really serious with one team. I was into the Mets because my Dad worked at IBM where he got free Mets tickets, so I was into the Mets ... like two games a year. Then I got to "Saturday Night Live" where my boss (Lorne Michaels) has unbelievable New York Yankees tickets, so he invites us to the games. I'm going to all the games, so I might as well root for the team I'm gonna go sit with. I became a Yankees fan for a few years. But now, I gotta say, I'm really rooting for the Red Sox.

My prediction: In 2 years nobody will remember who Jimmy Fallon was.

Someone on WEEI has already proclaimed him Jimmy "Straight to DVD" Fallon. I almost fell off my chair laughing when I heard it.

Yet he'll still be in the 2004 World Series video as part of the celebration, thanks to MLB's sellout. I don't know what's more offensive -- that, or FOX spending time during the World Series to interview Leon!

    Good name.

Speaking of ex-SNL members, Adam Sandler was born in Brooklyn, NY but moved to Mass as a young man. I believe he became a Sox fan, but when he moved back to NY after he became successful, turned his allegiance to the Yanks. I NEVER understood fair-weather fans like that.

I don't plan on buying the 2004 WS video anytime soon. I'll bet my house you won't either.

Judging by Chris Myers reaction to "The Famous Leon" doing his interview in character...he probably wasn't supposed to be. Some people take their characters way too far.

And if Jimmy Fallon is in any part of the WS video..I'm seriously going to call the MLB and give them a piece of my mind.

Heck, I haven't even watched the Sox celebrating on our field yet (or ever, hopefully) -- I was at the game, turned my head away quickly after the final pitch, bolted up the stairs and burst into tears. I turned off Game 6 of the WS in 2003 and never saw the Marlins celebrate on our field, and left the house after the 2002 season ending. The only celebration I couldn't avoid seeing was 2001, and that's because I was in such shock I didn't even think of turning the TV off!

I think he's gonna be in the video, sad to say. He was right there on the field when the Sox were celebrating. I feel for you, and I'm not being sarcastic -- the last thing I would want, if I were in your shoes, is to have my World Series celebration moment marred by some two-bit "comedian". &po'd&
