BA: EL Top 20 Prospects for 2004

So, anyone care to wager which, if any, members of the '04 Trenton Thunder will make this list?

I'll go with Cano and maybe Navarro, but that's about it.

I think Cano and Navarro will both appear on the list.

Yea there isn't really ayone else that could go on the list I don't think.

Next year they will be much better in Trenton though.

I agree Cano will get a pick

But, I think Navarro will not. I recall BA saying several times during the year that scouts were very down on Navarro, especially during his time in AA.

Cannizarro at SS? I think he had an excellent season. His stats at his position should get him serious consideration. The question is where does he project for the future? I'm not yet convinced that he's a bona fide major league regular. Perhaps a utility guy down the road.

Cano should get there, and Navarro has a decent shot, but perhaps at #20.

There was nothing impressive about Andy's season given his advanced age and there's no way he makes the list.

Not impressive, but he had a very good season. He was one of the few offensive bright spots on the team. I am aware of his age, which is why I noted that .................

I honestly wouldn't even consider his season very good for the simple fact that he was 25 and showed no power.

Q: Tom McCullough from York PA asks:
A catcher Dioner Navarro at age 20 posted good enough numbers in 2004 at AA Trenton and at AAA. Is he the next Ivan Rodriguez? Thanks. A:

Alan Matthews: The Yankees' Navarro, along with Blue Jays lefty Gustavo Chacin, posed the two biggest debates among league scouts and managers for the list. Neither made it, but both were close. Navarro did not perform well enough at Trenton (.369 slugging) despite ranking highly in the Class A FSL last season, and really shining at Trenton late in the year. might have come in thinking he would handle it better. He got a reality check, and honestly, I was surprised the Yankees pushed him to Triple-A after 255 Double-A abs. He has good catch-and-throw skills and moves well behind the plate. He can drive balls to the gaps, though he would not classify as a home run hitter at this stage. He has his age on his side, so let's hope he takes his humbling experience to heart and works harder to come back, make adjustments, and continue his development.

Q: Frank from Herndon, VA asks:
Is Robinson Cano ready to take over 2B for the Yankees next year? A:

Alan Matthews: Perhaps that's wishful thinking, but the beauty of their lineup is that you can get away with breaking in a raw rookie and still win 90-105 games. Miguel Cairo has not hurt them this season. Cano is not ready, as his appraoch needs improvement, but he has great tools. I'm not certain he can play second base in the big leagues, however. Scouts love his arm strength but I agree with them when they suggest he'll have to move to third base.

Perhaps it's just me, but this chat seemed really subpar. Many of the questions did not seem to be answered properly, I'm disappointed.

You think that Cano will be able to remain @ 2nd?

I had class so I couldn't get a question in, but this is something that I want to know about. Every year (seemingly), BA makes comments about Cano getting thicker in the lower half and thus slower, and every year he wins best defensive 2B in his league, in addition to looking rail thin to me. Something is not adding up.

I like Andy but IMO he's not an MLB SS.I had this debate about 3 months ago when I said Plumley out shines Andy with the glove at Low A ball.I was told that Andy was better because he had less errors then Grant but my take was the Grant gets to balls Andy has no shot at.I guess what I'm saying is Andy is a UT guy at best were as I feel Plumley was Glove ready now.

I was one of the guys who thought Plumley made too many errors. He did cut down on them over the last 25 games of the season, and he has very nice range. His question will be the bat, whether he can hit enough to warrant a major league spot.
