Was it really his fault that his team got old? Was it his fault that his GM foolishly traded away Carlos Guillen, and made some bad FA signings? Or, did they simply underachieve?

Too bad for him. Not his fault his team played like a AAA team all year. That team seems perfect for Art Howe.
A real shame. That team took its role as spoiler very seriously. They really played hard-that's a credit to the manager. Melvin should get a chance real soon (Philly?)
Don't look down here.
I could see Howe going to Seattle, Grady Little going to the Phillies and Bobby V. coming back to the Mets and if not him then Bowa going to the Mets.Originally posted by DaPip1998

Would Grady Little want the hassle of being a manager in Philly? I would think his Boston experience would lead him to a less "hostile" environment. He would be a good fit for that Phillies team...
Bowa would be a potential disaster in New York. If Minaya goes with the youth movement, then Bowa would be a good hire. A young team would probably thrive under Bowa. However, a team loaded with veterans would probably tune him out rather quickly...
Actually, with the Phillies, it was known that the younger players did not like Bowa, but the veterans (Thome, Bell, Polanco...) thought he was manageable. Bowa would ahve a heart attack if he were given a team full of "Triple-A" pitchers and position players.Originally posted by Yanks21

...the ownership needed a scapegoat. They looked at the GM (who is REALLY the one who screwed this team up) and he in turn looked for someone to blame. "Hmmmm, let's see -- it was all the manager's fault!!!"

I think Little could be a good fit in Philly. He's a good guy, and while not a "great" manager yet, I'm sure he learned from his Boston gig. Hey, the guy did manage a group of loose cannons to 95 wins -- he had a lot of respect from the players. I don't see Francona being much, if any, better.Originally posted by Kulish29

It just completely dawned on me that Bob Melvin was allegedly the Red Sox top candidate to replace Grady Little. Supposedly, the Mariners denied the Red Sox permission to speak with him. It makes one wonder what may happen to Francona if the Sox don't advance deep into the playoffs. Particularly now that Melvin is free...
Francona will be there for at least one more season. The reason he's there is because of Schilling. I dont think that Boston wants to admit to that (not that they ever would)by firing him after 1 year.Originally posted by Yanks21
