Everyone should be impressed with the Patriots

The Patriots are on the verge of something great. Something that will never EVER happen again. They have 17 straight wins, (12 season, 2 playoff, 1 SuperBowl, and 2 this season). This is more impressive than the '72 Dolphins, because The streak is longer, Doing it with the Free Agent market, Higher caliber of players Better technology of scouting other teams. Plus, they have 2 of the last 3 SuperBowl Championships. People around here (especially Belichick) do want want to call them a dynasty. But I will. The New England Patriots are the 2000's dynasty team to beat. People talk about Manning and all his stats, and McNabb's ability to do this and do that and make Chunky Soup commericals...but what does Brady do?...The most important stat that matters in all of professional sports: WINS

So Yankee History must really impress you...

My hats of to the Patriots...but without a lucky call (Tuck), their run isn't as great as you make out...

The pressure of an undefeated season is greater than the Pats current run...if they can finish this season undefeated then your really talking...

I don't think it is really a dynasty. I understand that it is difficult to sustain greatness in today's NFL with the salary cap and free agency making continuity impossible, but I think that they are at least a Super Bowl away from being a real "dynasty."

I would be more inclined to agree if they hadn't missed the playoffs between titles...I don't think you should miss the playoffs in the middle of a "dynasty." In fairness, they weren't a bad team when they missed, going 9-7. And if I recall correctly, the Jets won the division with the same record of 9-7. However, the fact remains that the NFL Playoffs did not include the defending champions.

Also, to be fair, I am a little biased. I watch the *ahem* experts on ESPN call the '96-'00 Yankees a "mini-dynasty," then proclaim that 2 SB's and a missed playoffs is a full "dynasty." Rubs me the wrong way.

Now, I'm not trying to take anything away from what they have accomplished. It is very impressive, to say the least. I have a lot of respect for Belichick, Brady, and the rest. But I think they should win another SB before I call them a dynasty. (I would LOVE for the Giants to sandwich missing the playoffs between Super Bowl wins)

Just my opinion. And with the schedule they have this year...I think they will win a LOT of games this year.

They've had pretty much every call go their way in this streak. Very lucky team. I'm guessing the Bills will end that streak this week and I can't wait for my Jets to kill them in week 7. It's going to be fun to dominate the Pats and show everyone how overated they are and underated we are.

I've already been over why this isn't a dynasty, one reason (of many) being that dynastic teams don't flat out miss the playoffs altogether during their "run". I am, however, very impressed with them to an extent up to this point.

That's pretty bold talk. I'm not sold on the Jets yet. Cin & SD? Not as good as beating, say...Washington and Cleveland.

what's a San Francisco kid doing becoming a Yanks fan, instead of the Giants or As? Not even bandwagon, since they weren't winning during his youth.

(must not be too big a fan if he has since shifted his loyalties to the Sox (and Giants))

And, btw, as much as I love the Pats, they're not a dynasty. If they manage to win again this year, may need to re-visit the question.

Hmm, I've got confidence in this team. We've got this thing and we can run all over that shaky run defense. I just hope that this team doesn't look past Miami just becuase they are horrible this year. As long as we dominate Miami, then I know we won't be looking past any teams this year and we've got this thing.

If that Pats win the SB this year, without the benefit from lucky calls, then it might be a dynasty.

God, I hate the Pats soooo freaking much.&po'd& &po'd& &po'd&

"last gasp" (You do know, btw, that when they kicked the FG, it was a tie, right?)

I hope they can manage to scrape by without your support.

So why does Brady only hang out with members of the Yankees, and wear Yankees hats when he's in NY?

Call go their way? Isn't that the name of the game? And lucky team? I really don't think so. I always love when ANY team in ANY sport goes say, "3 out of 5 championships" or "5 out of 6". There is always that team in the middle that got "lucky" and what not. And for the Patriots run, the team in the middle are the Buccaneers. Everyone claimed that the Bucs had the best defense, "oh my god, they will repeat". What happened? They fell back to earth. Patriots will win the superbowl this year, and make it 3 out 4. Further making them a dynasty and further making the Bucs, a "lucky team". Fun to dominate the Pats? Yea, that will really happen, with the moblie and quick quarterback in Bledsoe...

You are sounding extremely confident, JWF. I hope that you will be able to handle a Jets loss to the Pats, as it is sure to happen. I can hardly wait for your analysis of that game.

    yep

brady is like the most overrated player in football by far. And whats so good about corry dillon??? He had like 300 yards rushing all season last year. I really wouldnt be suprised at all if the bills beat them tomorrow and i would REALLY REALLY be suprised if the jets lost to them
Okafor explained afterwards. "I just saw this orange object floating in the air and it said 'grab me'. I grabbed it, spun, saw the rim, thought it would be a good idea to put it in, and that's what I did."

Sure, Brady's overrated -- never been to a pro bowl, so not sure how highly "rated" he is in the first place.

Corey Dillon? Look at his #s before last year. Even better, look at tape of his game 2 weeks ago.

pssst... he went to the Pro Bowl in 2002, cubsy! However, one could have argued that, statistically, he merited a berth much more for his 2003 and 2004 seasons. I think he's just now starting to get a little bit of the recognition for his skills as more than a "game manager" QB that he deserves, but before the last Super Bowl win, he was vastly, vastly underrated. As I have explained to my bf, there are many, many reasons why I would take Brady in a big game over Brett Favre himself (especially the Brett Favre of the past few years in the playoffs ).

Come on now. Let's be serious. He had 541 yards on 138 touches. If you project that out to the 300 touches he's used to getting, he would have had over 1,000 yards for the 7th straight season. Up until last year he averaged 1,250+ yards and 7+ touchdowns a year, with 4.4 ypa. Dillon is a great running back. And he's a huge improvement over Antwoin Smith/Kevin Faulk.

really? guess I forgot that. thanks.

I would take Brady in a heartbeat over Favre to win one game -- especially after that neat little turnaround heave for an interception Favre did needlessly against the Eagles last season (or the season before?)

Take your pick... he's thrown multiple picks in key playoff games for, what, 3 years running now, I believe. Who will ever forget that 5 INT performance against the Rams? I know I won't!

Brady, at least at this point in his career, puts the team on his shoulders in crunch time without trying to carry the team singlehandedly--if you get what I mean. He remains level-headed, and just does not make ill-advised throws, especially when it counts the most.

I found a quote in the latest "Chewing the Fat with John Kruk" that's very pertinent in this discussion:
So every once in a while, you need to stop what you're doing, take a deep breath and remember you aren't going to win or lose the game on one play. There's no need to go out there like every pitch is the bottom of the ninth in Game 7.

All the great players seem to slow it down at the most important times in the game -- Jeter, Jordan, Gretzky, Tom Brady. That isn't by accident, and neither are all their championships.
Tom Brady's ability to "slow it down" and keep his cool in big spots is probably unparalleled among NFL QBs in the league today.

Yes, calls go their way and no that is not the name of the game. Getting BS calls from the ref to win games is not the name of the game. Once again the Pats got BS calls. And when I say BS calls, I mean complete f*cking bull sh*t. They were outplayed today but because they have the refs in their pocket they won the game. Lets go through this shall we? Actually, I found a post that says it better than I can on another forum so I'll just use that one.

Hick, the Patriots get the kinda calls that make you wonder if the officials have money on the game

First series the Patriots throw an incomplete pass on 3rd Down ... BUT WAIT ... London Fletcher gets flagged for roughing the passer

Officials explanation? ... BLOW TO THE HEAD

But when they show the replay, low and behold, there was no blow to the head

Bills get tagged for 15 yards ... Patriots get a new series of downs ... and they proceed to score the games first TD

Little bit later ... Patriots throw an incomplete pass on 3rd down ... BUT WAIT ... DB gets flagged for illegal contact

    ONLY PROBLEM?

When you see the replay, the DB is running stride for stride with the WR, never makes contact after five yards, turns and leaps for the ball as it's coming down ... and a flag comes flying out

Now how do you call illegal contact on that play at the point of reception?

In that case it's either PASS INTERFERENCE or it's NOTHING ... the flag for illegal contact is supposed to be thrown BEFORE the ball is in the air, not when it's coming down for the DB and WR ... but that's when the flag was thrown, and illegal contact was the call

I mean, they just get the kinda calls that make you wonder

And I'm not even mentioning the five million other flags that were thrown on Buffalo today, everytime they seemed to have something going

Look man, I'm not jealous ... I know the Patriots are an exceptional team ... I just think this love affair the zebras have with NE is gettin a little ridiculous

I mean, WTF ... give the other team a fair shake ... at the very least, give them a chance to win fair and square ... JUST A CHANCE ... cause the way they create calls for the Patriots, they're impossible to beat

If this is how it's gonna be ... if this is how NE will continue to have the refs in their hip pocket ... might as well cancel the season now and just award the Patriots the Vince Lombardi trophy

And, he forgot about the Corey Dillon fumble in the 4th quarter that was ruled down even though he actually did fumble it. I think that the Pats owner has gotta be paying off the NFL to make sure they get calls their way.

Sure. Of course, that ignores the numerous penalties the Pats get flagged for -- wouldn't really expect that if the refs were in their pocket, would you?

This is actually kind of fun, looking forward to the whining after every Patriots win.

(btw, the call against Fletcher was a bad call. It happens. The Bills did far more to hurt themselves, though.)

(and btw, the Dillon call was the right call. The real mistake was something that, imo, happens to much in the NFL: the whistle had been blown.)

Im so f*ckin sick of the Patriots....they catch EVERY break (tuck rule..Kasay kicking it out of bounds in the SB...to name a few)......Im sick of people talking about Belichick being some kind of God....if he is so great why didnt he win in Cleveland?? or why did the GREAT Belichick's defense (as well as the GOD HIMSELF Parcells) completely fall apart and fold in the 98 AFC Title game against Denver??? why did Belichick bail on the Jets in 99?? oh yeah....cuz he is a complete jerk....I guess he learned something from his "mentor" Parcells...how to be an a'hole...and leave a team hanging dry

Im just so tired of the Patriots....I cannot wait till we go into Foxboro in Week 7....put up 34 points against the overrated Patriots D...and hopefully Abraham or Ellis sack Brady numerous times....and he breaks his freaking leg or something

Why did his team completely fall apart and fold in Game 7 of the 2001 WS???

BTW dabomb2045, here's some objectivity of my own...

they catch EVERY break (tuck rule..

Yes, the Pats caught a break, eventhough that play was reviewed to death (during and after the game) and was ruled as a correct call. Moreover, after that play it was 4th and long and it was still the Raiders game to lose (they led 13-3). They lost it and they've been crying like babies ever since.

...Im sick of people talking about Belichick being some kind of God....if he is so great why didnt he win in Cleveland?? or why did the GREAT Belichick's defense (as well as the GOD HIMSELF Parcells) completely fall apart and fold in the 98 AFC Title game against Denver???

There's only one God I know and his name ain't Bill.

As for Cleveland, Belichick was in a no-win situation as Art Modell was getting ready to pack up and move to Baltimore in 1995 and BB was beginning his first head coaching job. I actually give credit to BB for having the wisdom to bench hometown favorite and ineffective QB Bernie Kosar and rediscovering QB Vinny Testaverde and earning scorn from media and fans. Gee, why did Parcells pickup Vinny for the Jets and later for the 'Boys?

As for the Jets losing to Denver in the 1998 AFC Championship game, I have a theory. Perhaps the Broncos were the better team. The Jets "D" actually did a good job stopping Terrell Davis in the first half. But in the second half, Denver made adjustments and threw the ball downfield. That was too much for the Jets to overcome. That's what can happen when you are playing against the best RB in the NFL (Davis) and gameplanning to stop him. Denver simply had too many weapons on offense for the Jets to account for. That same team went on to crush Atlanta to repeat as SB champions. If you think Belichick is not that good a coach, why are you so upset that he left the Jets?

why did Belichick bail on the Jets in 99?? oh yeah....cuz he is a complete jerk....I guess he learned something from his "mentor" Parcells...how to be an a'hole...and leave a team hanging dry

Put youself in BB's place, Parcells was about to end is second "last" coaching job as a new owner was taking the place of the late Leon Hess. Meanwhile BB was being offered a job in NE that had responsiblites equal to the position Parcells took when he went to the Jets. Yet, while planning his own exit strategy, Tuna tries to deny BB that job while demeaning him the media. This is the same Duane Charles Parcells who was talking to the Jets in the week his team was preparing for SB XXXI. if you were BB, would you do what he did? I would. BB was avoiding another no-win situation (new owner, lofty expectations). Heck, after one season, Al Groh couldn't bolt for Virgina fast enough. Before the Jets 3-0 start this season, Jets fans were ready to run Herman Edwards out of town. As the old saying goes, the proof is in the pudding.

Im just so tired of the Patriots....I cannot wait till we go into Foxboro in Week 7....put up 34 points against the overrated Patriots D...and hopefully Abraham or Ellis sack Brady numerous times....

The Pats are 3-0 and have beaten better teams than the Jets. How are they overrated? BTW they've seemed to have fixed the problems in the run defense.

and he breaks his freaking leg or something

Chill dude, I wouldn't wish that on anybody. Besides, if Brady is as bad as you claim he is, the Jets would be better off with him in the game.

Natalie, funny you mentioned that. I was watching ESPN w/ the Sportwriters: Dan LeBatard, Mike Lupica, and I'm sorry to say I forgot the 3rd gentlman's name on the panel. Anyway all three agreed that Tom Brady is the best QB in the NFL today and they concur that he his comparable to Joe Montana as well. They all noted that in crunch time, he comes through while Peyton struggles. Moreover, LeBatard made a bold statement that Brady could be even better than Montana since, the latter played Jerry Rice, John Taylor, and a great offensive line.

I know, I was kidding around. My point was that a lot of people on this board don't think of Torre as a good manager at all.

I missed that, my bad, but let me tell you this. As someone from a team that doesn't win too often, when a manager/coach gets you one ring (let alone four) he is doing his job.

would u expect anything else from a Jets fan.....but to be very bitter??

my team was pretty much the joke of the NFL from 1987-1996....then we get the great Parcells and Belichick in here....we get a game away from the playoffs in 97...then the great Parcells...who's ego is bigger then anything...doesnt want O'Donnell to be the one who lead the Jets to the playoffs so he has Leon Johnson throwing halfback option passes and Ray Lucas running option plays and trying to throw passes into the end zone.....the ego of that coaching staff cost us a playoff spot...then in 98 we play great for a half and 4 minutes of the 3rd quarter against Denver in the AFC title game.....totally outplaying them....then the great Parcells and Belichick get SEVERLY outcoached by Shanahan in the 2nd half.....then in 99....the great Parcells neglects to have a competent back-up QB on the team....we lose Vinny....and have to start RICK F*CKING MIRER.....Parcells then proceeds to give Mo Lewis...Vinny...Marvin Jones long-term contracts when even then they were starting to go downhill....screwing over our cap situation....then he bails on us.....then his boy Belichick....bails on us too

then Belichick proceeds to go to a team who I hate as much as the Red Sox....and turns them into a mini-dynasty.....meanwhile my Jets continue to flounder.....am I bitter?? u damn right I am.....the great Belichick's defense collapsed against Denver.....thats my lasting memory of the Belichick-Parcells era.....they win everywhere else except for the Jets....go figure....what else should I expect

    I sympathize.

I've been following the Giants since 1974 and the Partiots since 1976. Two football teams, too many lean years. Knowing their history, I still can't believe these are the Patriots. New stadium and all. I still keep expecting to wake up. I could post a novel about the horrible (comedic) history of this team. From Irving Fryar leaving the game at halftime only to crash his car into a tree to having the toilets in old Schaeffer Stadium back flushing in the Pats 1st game at their new home in 1971.

The Pats were the redheaded stepchild of Boston sports. They were that "bad team that played in that ugly stadium on US Rte. #1". A friend of mine from Ohio who played QB for Ohio Univ. told me he had seen high school stadiums that were better than old Foxboro Stadium.

It could be worse. You could be a Cardinals fan (I've only met one in my life, but I think even he was only a Jake Plummer fan) or a pre-Super Bowl Bucs fan. Or the Vikes, the original losers of 4 Super Bowls. 9 down years is not that big a deal. At least you have Broadway Joe's guarantee. What do the Cards fans have within the past 50 years? The one win against Dallas in the playoffs in '99 (what a sad day)?

I know full well that "it could be worse" is a horrible argument, but you speak as though the Jets are the Cubs or Red Sox of the NFL. I've not met any bitter Jets fans in real life. The most bitter NFL fans I've met are Eagles fans and those of the teams who've been relocated away from them in recent memory.

I agree with you. I went to college near Cincinatti, knew a lot of Bengals fans. I graduated in 2001 with kids who hadn't seen a decent football team since they were 9 or 10 years old. Also, Riverfront was a terrible place to watch a game. I can't imagine a worse venue for football. I don't know how those teams with dual purpose cookie cutters could stand it.

I'm a Giants fan, so I don't want to speak for Jets fans...but it could be worse.

Be thankful you're not a Viqueen fan. Imagine the pain of starting out the year 6-0 only to fail to make the playoffs by losing to the Cards on the last play of the last game of the regular season!!!!
Imagine getting your Purple Ass handed to you in FOUR Super Bowls.

In the last 16 years that you have been an interested Jets fan, the Bengals have 1 winning season and 1 playoff win to thier name. 9-7 in 1991 with 1 playoff win.
