I notice Morales is still in extended spring and will be assigned to class AA Norwich. Is this because he is out of playing shape, or is he a dud?

I would hesitate to call him a dud but I do think the guy was overhyped. Scouts see him as a utility guy at best. Judging from what I saw in ST, his defense isn't so hot and his swing is awfully long for a relatively smalll guy...
He plays 3B and Henson is slated for Columbus so he'll be able to play every day at Norwich.

With Henson hypothetically slated to be the Yankees starting 3Bman for the next decade or so, Morales becomes the next Soriano to Henson's Jeter.
There has been talk of moving Morales to the OF or another IF positions. With so many players already set at Columbus, it makes sense to send Andy to Norwich and let him work out his new position there.
Forgive me for taking the Contrarian view
I really don't know if Morales will hit well enough to play any position regularly. However, if he can play six positions, like Clay Bellinger, go ahead and hit .220. That's his best shot at a major-league job - Superutility.
Why did the Yanks give him all that money to be the next coming of Clay Bellinger? They must have thought he had more potetntial than that. I hope they still have hope that he can contribute as more than a utility guy.

"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."
We simply don't know yet.
According to Cuban fans he normaly plays brilliant defense and is a clutch hitter that responds well to pressure. How much of any of that is A) true, and B) will convert to anything in the majors remains a mystery.
Obviously if he can not adapt to AA pitching then the YANKEES will not pin much hope on his future. Time will tell.
I don't think the Yankees knew that they would be getting Drew Henson back when they signed Morales. Now, if Morales stays a third baseman he's insurance in case Hensen doesn't live up to his potential.
I've also heard that he already knew how to play the outfield before he came to the Yankees so I guess that does make him much more versitile.

I want Drew Henson. Put andy in the outfield.
Playing time can't hurt him, or at least can't hurt those who have to evaluate him. Remember, it took him quite a while to get to the US - when was the last time he played ball before this spring? He could move up, Henson could move down, or they could each move up before the year is out.
Also, if he puts up some really good numbers in Norwich, it makes it easier for us to trade him if Henson is the future (which, by the way, we still don't know - we have seen Morales try to hit major league pitching, but we have never seen Henson against big leaguers).

Tell that to Bellinger and to Luis Sojo!Originally posted by koko

they yanks have a tendancy to pay out money for guys they aren't sure about in the hopes that they'll turn out well..
but hey, i think they can afford it![]()
