Red Sox vs. Yankees Pitching Forcast

Still early but a look at how the pitchers for both teams match up going into this weekend and next weekend's series......

    This weekend
    Friday: Aroyo vs. El 'Duque
    Saturday: Lowe vs. Leiber
Sunday: Pedro vs. Halsey (or who ever takes his spot)

    Next Weekend
    Friday: Pedro vs. Lieber
    Saturday: Wake vs. Halsey
Sunday: Schilling vs. Mussina (Red Sox - Yankees tied for 1st going into this game - Schilling vs. Mussina.... ESPN will be kicking themselves in the balls for not picking this game for "Sunday Night Baseball" if that is the case)

I should mention that NY has off days this Thursday (9/16) and Monday (9/20) so there is a good chance they may skip Halsey and go with a 4 man rotation for the next 10 days which would change things.

Mussina's throwing Sunday against Pedro at the Stadium.

Mussina is pitching Sunday, not Halsey.

And there's a thread on the main Yankee board discussing the upcoming Yanks-Sox series, FYI.

RSTY, anything about the Yankees goes in "Inside the Lines", not "Around the Majors". Had you checked there, that thread is already being discussed.

Who cares. In the postseason, the Yankees will no longer have to send out their rookie SP's, but instead the Redsox will meet the Yankees" CREAM OF THE CROP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Brown's is healing quickly, Mussina is healed, and El Duque is totally healed!!!!
    David

I know what kind of pitcher Whitey was and kind of person he is. It makes me feel proud to be a Yankee. We're keeping this in the family. (On breaking Whitey's PS consecutive scoreless innings)

Lowe can implode at any point. Arroyo isn't proven in the post-season. The Yanks have beat Pedro a number of times and rocked Schilling back in July.

That may have been the point.

Did you see Moose pitch on Tuesday? He was lights out. He gave up 3 hits in 8 innings for a shutout walked 1 and struck out 11. Moose has been inconsistent but he is also regaining his strength after coming off the DL. If Moose returns to that form on Sunday, the Sox are screwed.

I hate to point this out as it was a solid outing by him but it was the Royals. I'm still looking forward to the matchup this Sunday, easily the more exciting of the three pitching matchups.

I'm sure it won't be much of a problem for Mussina as the Sox have been shut down by pictures like Kazmir and Madritsch.

Right, because those two games really served as a microcosm of the Sox's offensive struggles all season.

Geez, it could go either way. Moose could give up 8 in 5 innings. Schilling can get rocked like he did back in July. Maybe everyone will pitch no-hitters. You can't tell. And past success isn't going to guarantee victory. Halsey was the starting pitcher the last time Pedro faced the Yankees and the Yankees won. Would you have thought that'd be the case going into that game?

This isn't a personal attack on you at all but sometimes these things bother me. Of course it was the Royals but he did pitch well. These are all Major League ballplayers capable of hitting Major League pitching.

One thing that really got to me was back in 2001 (I think) when Derek Lowe no-hit the DEVIL RAYS they made it a HUGE deal. Then a few weeks later Moose K'd 13 D-Rays and the NESN commentators made a remark along the lines of, "Moose K's 13 in his start for New York, but it was against Tampa Bay so that doesn't mean much."

I understand what you mean. While I did bring up the team I still mentioned it was a solid outing. I consider it a little bit of a tune-up for the upcoming series for him. Mussina needs no commendation from me, he's constantly adding on to an extensive resume outlining a great career.

I actually don't remember the incident you brought up but if that's the case then I can see how that would irk me as well.

I'm hoping Duque sets the tone tomorrow night for a few reasons...

-- he's my favorite pitcher and of course I want to win
-- no offense to any Sox fans here, but I can't stand Arroyo (who I think looks and acts like a punk ) -- I would personally love to wipe that smirk off his face.
-- I also think it will be a lot easier for the Yanks if they win the first one and take some pressure off themselves...if the Sox give Duque his first defeat, I don't think it will bode well for the Yankees for the rest of the Series...

Lowe vs Lieber is anyone's guess although I have a feeling that Lowe is going to pitch pretty well...I just hope Lieber finds his arm slot early and is able to keep us in the game until it gets turned over to the pens...this game will probably be decided by who scores first -- I know Lieber's trends to give up runs in the first inning, anyone know what Lowe does early?

Moose vs Pedro will hopefully live up to its advertising...

Should be a great weekend for baseball -- I wish I was going to see it live!

I definitely agree with you about the first game being important. A win or loss by El Duque really sets the tone for the series.

As for what Lowe does early...depends on the game, he seems to be either on or off, nothing in between. I just hope the rain isn't too bad, I have been looking forward to these games for a while now.

I hear ya MSF -- I'm hoping for a classic Lowe meltdown, with or without the tears. Lieber's kind of the opposite to me-- even when his line looks really impressive, he never seems to give you a great feeling during the game and when it's not so good, we usually seem to still have a shot at a win...

I agree about the rain -- most importantly, I don't want anyone hurt on either side ala Hermanson a couple years back...

I forgot about the Hermanson incident, he was essentially done for the year after that. That's what a bad groin will do to you.
