Welcome to the Post Season - Round 1!!!!

Well, despite the best efforts of the Empire to crash the party all playoff spots have been claimed and none of them go to Darth Steve. It's hard to believe that a team that went 16-7 and had the 5th highest point total fell short, but that's the way the cookie crumbled.

Congrats to all the playoff teams! Here's the pecking order -

    1) New York Squeaks
    2) Michigan Wolverines
    3) The Marauders
    4) The Naked Truth
    5) Rhode Kill
    6) Saxmania's Swingers

The Squeaks and Wolverines have earned first round byes and get to watch the rest of us sweat it out! Here are the first round matchups -

    Swingers (11-12) at Marauders (16-7)
After a 7-1 start the Swingers went 4-11 the rest of the way to become the first team in NYYFans.com history to claim a playoff spot with a losing record. The Maurauders on the other hand finished strong, winning 4 in a row all with scores over 300 points. Anything can happen in any week but the Marauders have to be big favorites here.

    Kill (16-7) at Truth (16-7)
The Kill have won 5 of their last 6 and look to take a measure of revenge for the defeat they suffered versus the Truth in Week 17. The Truth enter the playoffs as the hottest team in the league, winning 8 in a row and topping 300 points in 7 of those 8 wins. With 3 starts each on the last two days of the week this game will likely come down to the wire.

    Play Ball!!!

Congratulations to all the playoff teams!

Maybe next year Steve should call his team the 81Reds.

Sax, you are the man! Good luck this week even though I really don't mean it! I am much happier playing you this week instead of the Empire. No offense Steve but I have a score to settle with the Swingers!

Day one, Gil Meche throws a complete game 5 hit shutout. Gil Meche.

    Un-................ing-real

All I can say is the over-rated Tim Hudson better answer the bell tonight or this could be a short post season.

edit - No Huddy tonight, it's Oswalt I've got going and Houston is getting no hit

One day down and the Kill have topped 110 points already. It's hard to believe things can look bleak on Sunday.

Houston's tied it up! Oswalt has thrown 108 pitches so is unlikely to come out for the 8th - the Astros need to take the lead NOW!!!

Consider it settled. My cleverly-chosen Rockies starter shuts down San Diego in Colorado, but ace reliever Harikkala undoes all his good work with a 1-inning implosion. I'm afraid this isn't going to be much of a contest.

This week's newsletter will be a little late(r), I'm afraid, due partly to the playoffs and partly to the fact that Adnam's "Broadside" ale is powerful stuff, particularly when your barmaid pulls the pint from about six feet up. Greasy burgers at 4am did not agree with the outcome.

    Rhode Kill vs Naked Truth
Rhode Kill outscored The Naked Truth 12 of 23 weeks.

    Saxmania's Swingers vs The Marauders
The Marauders outscored Saxmania's Swingers 12 of 23 weeks.

    Most shocking win of 2004:
    Junior's Bashers 330 at Michigan Wolverines 206

The Bashers only outscored the Wolverines in 3 of 23 weeks this season...but managed to do it once when it counted, beating them in Week 1.

Game that most affected this year's playoffs:
    Larrupin' Lou's 321, Evil Empire 319, Week 17.
The Empire can look back at this game as the 'one that got away'...3 more points in this game, and they'd be in the playoffs. (Sorry, Steve!)

The "Why can't I play them every week award":
Evil Empire outscored Junior's Bashers in 20 out of 23 weeks (with one week tied).

Fantasy Baseball: Larrupin' Lou's; New York Knights.

Yes, when I checked this morning to see how this weekend turned out I started thinking back and that came to mind. It sucks but I won a couple of weeks I probably shouldn't have. Take the Wolervines game last week. If there is no hurricane I get slaughtered.

The only thing that aggravates me is I made such a good run at the end, I was so confident I had a team that could match with anyone in the league and I came up a few points short. So close....

oh well, good luck to everyone! Now if only we had really pushed the draft order you and I discussed fornext year Eric. I'd have first overall!!

Now that is what I like the hear from the opposition. It is about time you people started to realize the wrath of the Marauders. It only took a 16-7 record, a Gehrig Division title (with no keepers), an 8-0 divisional record and 3rd place overall to finally get you guys to admit that you are looking at "the greatest expansion franchise in fantasy sports history".

Well you do have the better team on paper - but "scared" just doesn't cut it.

At least the power rankings were fairly accurate. The top 7 teams were the 6 playoff teams and the Empire who ever-so-slightly missed the playoffs.

Oh I think many of the playoff teams are happy I didn't get in, that's all I'm saying. I beefed up my team pretty good for the end there. If I had made it I would have had a very good shot at winning the whole thing.

Looking at the list of teams that made the playoffs, it's not looking good, George.

Well, thinking about this I figured that I'm much happier improving as much as I did this year rather then doing my best impression of the Diamonbacks.

The Kill show no signs of slowing down, and open up some distance between themselves and the Truth, thanks to Phil Nevin and Ramon Hernandez. Meanwhile, they have another start from Schmidt as a late decider if necessary. The Nudists will have wanted more than 14 points after getting 8 innings from Tim Hudson, and a blown save from Cordero didn't help. They will want more offense from their infield, too, but still have Randy Johnson and second Oswalt and Hudson starts. They just need the hitters to pick up the pace a bit.

Meanwhile the Marauders already have a comfortable cushion against the Swingers, thanks to a gem from Paul Byrd. A quiet day for the offense, but there's no shortage of hitting to come. The Swingers got a pretty good start out of Sun-Woo Kim, another last-minute injury replacement, and a few points from Moises Alou - but, like the Truth, their offense is not living up to its ability, with Blalock, Finley, and Young all in extended slumps. If Prior and Hernandez don't match their best performances, this one could be done well before Sunday.

Interestingly, both the Wolverines and the Squeaks are having very quiet weeks during their bye round. If they were playing this week, then they'd be losing to all four active teams. However, it might just be that the owners haven't tweaked their rostersfor the off-week, knowing that the points wouldn't count.

Hahaha, my team is sucking and I'M GOING TO MOVE ON ANYWAY BECAUSE I HAVE A BYE AND YOU DON'T!!!! HAHAHAHAHA.

Please disregard the previous if your name is Wai.

Steve- I'm only trying to help-with an attitude like that I'd expect you to be hanging up "2004 Almost Made Playoffs" banners at your stadium. You should try to raise yourself above the level of the Mets, as they prepare their "2004 Not Last Place" banner. At least they're confident the Expos won't pass them. Just in case, they have a "2004 Not Worst Team in Baseball" banner, though.

I understand what you're saying, and in real baseball this is true. However, this is my second year playing fantasy baseball, and I went from the second worst team in the league to the best team to not make the playoffs. And I'm happy about that.

Down by 43. Garcia, Meche, Park, Redman, and Schmidt vs Hudson, Johnson, Lackey, Oswalt, and Peavy.

Sadly enough, that is my active roster that is sucking badly this week. But then again, who cares since this week doesn't count?

A positive for the Truth yesterday, as Mark Redman's start at Texas went very wrong indeed, and it took both Gagne and Mota to drag the Kill's total back above 0 for the day. Neither side provided much offense, but with Mota unlikely to pitch again today, and Redman's sole start this week gone, there's a little more cause for optimism by the Truth. However, their hitters need to get things going - Burnitz, Edmonds, and Posada all have big fat 0-fers.

The Marauder's cashed in an excellent Clemens start to maintain their lead over Saxmania yesterday. Hermanson's save was also a positive, and the infield added five doubles for some tidy points-scoring. The Swingers' offense also started to kick in yesterday, with Martinez, Young, and Finley all going yard. Jarrod Washburn's start was decent, though not enough to match Clemens', and the Swingers desperately need both Hernandez and Prior to outpitch the incoming Pavano.

The two bye-week teams, by contrast, continue to suck.
