    The Incredible Shrinking A's

Oakland just lost 5-4 to the Tribe. That makes 4 losses in a row at home including the Red Sox sweep. Mulder, Hudson, and Zito haven't been pitching well lately and Dotel blew the save in the 8th in the Cleveland loss.

    Team----W L---PCT--GB--Home--Away--L10--STK
    Athletics 81 58 .583 - 45-22 36-36 5-5 L4
    Angels 79 60 .568 2 39-30 40-30 5-5 L2
    Rangers 76 64 .543 5 ½ 44-25 32-39 3-7 W1

Actually, those standings are from before the A's loss. The Angels are actually 1.5 back and the Rangers are 5 back. Hopefully the A's keep playing like crap, because the Rangers get them for 7/10 after they're done with Toronto.

They play the Angels 6 more times before the season is over. It could come down to the very last game.

Yeah, here we are getting our panties in a bunch because we have to go to the wire with the Sox.

Well, the A's have lost five in a row, and if they can't hold off the Angels, they won't make the playoffs.

I still think they're going to make it, but it'll be tense.

I always thought the key in a short series was top of the rotation starters. That's the A's strength, they just haven't gotten it done in the playoffs.

The A's are missing Jermaine Dye's bat right now. Jermaine Dye was injury free all year until he hurt his thumb.

A's down 2-1 to their nemesis, the Rangers, in the top of the fourth.

He's also been mediocre. His OPS is .782. Hardly what I would want to see out of a cleanup hitter.

2-2 in the top of the sixth. Chan Ho has pitched pretty well so far.

Announcer just said Huson's ERA in September before this start was 6.25.

What a finish! Hudson holds the Rangers to 2 runs. Dotel on to close. Blalock HR, followed by a one out Michael Young double. Rangers season down to Dotel v. Delucci. He strokes a double past Dye, Two runs score Rangers win.

Most exciting game I've seen in a while, thanks to the Yankee blowout.

In fairness Hudson pitched well when it counted, but it was not enough.

Rangers are two games out, and will pull ahead of Anaheim if they don't win tonight.

Texas beat Oakland with 3 in the ninth.

    Texas only 2 games out.

The Sox hit them at the right time, just as they were beginning their awful play. Otherwise it wouldn't be a cakewalk to the WC.

The A's bullpen has been their achilles heel all season and Octavio Dotel blew another save. The A's are one of the teams in baseball that has the most blown saves. The others: the Indians and Tigers

I actually thought Dotel would help them. Wrong.

All the pressure is on the Oakland A's this week as they start a 7-game homestand in their remaining schedule. They have to deal with Ichiro and the Seattle Mariners. Not only Ichiro is goin' after for George Sisler's record for most hits in one season, but the Pacific Northwest M's are playing the major spoiler role. The A's also have to deal with the Angels in the final weekend of the regular season.

If the A's crumble and collapse in their homestand, there will be a lot of mayhem in Oakland (Billy Beane fired?! Ken Macha fired?!)

Angels win big today to cut the division lead to 1/2 game. Mariners up 3-0 in the 4th against the A's. I could imagine losing the division with just games left to play would be more disastrous than their previous 4 postseason appearances combined.

Make that 6-2 Seattle on Bret Boones 2-run blast with the flip of the bat in the 6TH.

And now, the A's lost 7-2. A's and Halos tied for 1st in the AL West with Texas 3 behind.

This is one of the craziest races for the playoffs ever...

I mean you have 2 teams tied for the AL West with 5 games left and 3 against each other.. you have 2 teams tied for the NL WC and one only 1/2 game back...

    Just plain nuts

A lot of fun though. Although some A's, Angels, Rangers, Dodgers, Giants, Cubs fans might not agree w/ me, understandably.

And there have been some incredible comebacks late in games by some of these teams. It's fantastic.

I got to say I'm surprised. I thought the Angels would win the Wild Card and the As the AL West. I didn't think that the Angels would get it together or that the As would meltdown like they are doing at the moment.

The A's big three have been getting hammered. I have never seen three quality starters fall apart simultaneously before. It is literally as though they have all forgotten how to pitch. Unbelievable!

With the A's and Angels tied in the standings, Angels up 8-6 in the 11th over Texas, while the A's are tied 1-1 with the suddenly "less sucky than usual" Mariners.

Kudos to the M's for going down swingin'.

    A's

Shrinking faster. 4-2 Seattle going to bottom of 8th. What a potential upset. The M's are some SOB's going down the stretch.

Oops, he did it again (pitched a complete game against the A's).

Anaheim takes a one game lead in the West.

If they come in second, do we call them the B's?
