Ted's head back in court again

    This is really sad

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled Friday that a Scottsdale cryonics facility must show a document to the nephews of Ted Williams that could prove the baseball great wanted to be cryogenically preserved.

Judge Thomas Dunevant III ordered the Alcor Life Extension Foundation Inc. to present a document of gift to Ted and Sam Williams, nephews of the Boston Red Sox slugger who died two years ago.

The nephews are among family and friends of Williams who have waged a legal battle to have his remains cremated, a request that was in his will.

Fenway Park goes dark now. For a while. No "Sweet Caroline." No "Dirty Water." No "Tessie" sweeping up on the big board while the Dropkick Murphys send everybody home with a smile. The only activity at the yard in the next 11 days will be the Sox grounds crew pondering where to put the World Series logo in the grass behind home plate. Dan Shaughnessy

I really despise Williams' son for making his father a joke. It really is depressing.

I wish that fraud of a company could bring Williams' son back to life - so Sox fans could kill him.

His old age should be remembered as that wonderful All-Star game moment at Fenway in '99. Instead, his son ruined his image.

I understand the jokes, as all of us have laughed at some morbid humor, but it isn't right. The man deserves better. It isn't like he brought this circus on himself, like Michael Jackson or Mike Tyson.

Like I said, NYYFAN, I understand the laughs. God knows I've made "gallows humor" jokes too, plenty of times. I'm not mad at you.

But geez, so he didn't get his paperwork done quite properly. His own son took away his dignity. His kid could have looked at the "will" problem and said, "How should my dad be remembered? What's the best thing I can do for him, that the rest of my family and my dad's friends would agree with?" I can't even comprehend how someone could instead do that to his/her parent.

    That's not Ted's fault. That's his son's.

This is really a tragedy. Unfortunately, John Henry always looked at his father as a way to make his own fortune. I'll never forget the 99 All Star game when all the stars surrounded him in a very nice moment but Ted had to wear a stupid "Hitter.com" hat that his son made him wear.

Sad sad sad. It breaks my heart to think of the man in such a condition. His son was notorious for exploiting his father, and thus my opinion of him was never very high.

One of Ted's daughters had already given up the legal fight to give the man a proper, dignified burial, so this may be the last shot.

Easy on crackin' the jokes too, c'mon now.

Even though I'm a Yankee fan, Ted Williams is one of my all-time favorite players. He was a true American hero. I just finished reading Leigh Montville's excellent book on Ted, and it struck me that Williams and DiMaggio had similar final years, where scheming "caretakers" took away their dignity. But what John Henry Williams did was much worse than what Morris Engleberg did, not only because John Henry was Ted's beloved son, but because he made his father a national laughingstock due to his greed.

Anyhow, it's clear from the evidence Montville uncovered that the so-called "will" proclaiming Ted's final wishes to be frozen was a fraud perpetrated by his son. If you haven't read the book already, I encourage you to do so. It's the definitive Williams book, and I've read pretty much all the books on Ted's life. Poor Ted -- he should have been able to live his final years in dignity; instead, he had his son forcing him to sign autographs for hours on end. John Henry Williams even sold Ted's home's American flag on EBay, that's how much of a jerk he was.

It's sad and ironic that both Ted Williams son and Joe D's son died a short time after their father. In both cases the sons were unsuccessful in their own lives...Ted's son was known for trying to exploit his father's fame and Joe's son couldn't live up to his father's expectations and died in poverty!!

I agree. And I actually feel sh!tty for chiming in with my remark. My apologies to all.

I agree it was embarassing. I try and remember him motioning to Mark McGwire to lean in so he could say something to him and McGwire later said in an interview that WIlliams asked him if, "...when he fouled off a pitch, did he ever smell wood burning?" The man lived, ate and breathed baseball. And fly-fishing. And aviation.

The man's passing should have been held with more dignity, grace and respect and it's also pretty sad to see others, no matter what site we're on or team we root for, crack unintelligent one-liners over another's grave.

    EDITED...

And yet a Boston fan started this thread with:

"Ted's head back in court again "

You should police your own fans...

Right. I'm pretty sure the term "others" does not necessarily disclude Red Sox fans. Allow me to edit as it appears a thread relating to a hero's tragedy is steering slightly towards another RS Vs. Yanks debate. In all honesty it wasn't my intention.

I would enthusiasticly help you. Fortunately Williams life was so well lived and his reputation so fantatstic that even a pathetic episode like this one can not tarnish his great image. His acheivements in baseball do not even rate amongst his greates moments. The man volunteered to step away from fame and fortune to return to the Marine Corps and risk his life in Korea when his country was desperately short of men and equipment. Although he was almost always badly outnumbered and suffered from ammo shortages and inadequate aircraft maintenance Willaims became an "ace" AGAIN!

No honest American will ever think less of Williams regardless of what his son or anyone else does.
