    Playoff matchup clarifications....

I was just reading the playoff matchup formula in the rules thread and I'm a bit confused about how the matchups work. I'm going to put what I think is right, could someone in the know either confirm this or correct me?

Team 1 - Division winner with best record
Team 2 - Division winner with second best record
Team 3 - Division winner with third best record
Team 4 - Division winner with fourth best record
Team 5 - Best Record Wild Card winner
Team 6 - Highest Points Wild Card winner

    1st Round
    3 plays 6
    4 plays 5

    2nd Round
1 plays lowest ranked team remaining
    2 plays other remaining team

    3rd Round
    Remaining teams play for Champjonship.

    Is that right?

The priority for team 6 should be switched with team 5.

I think round 1 is correct. But we I don't think we re-seed, so Team 1 plays the 4/5 winner; Team 2 plays the 3/6 winner. YES, it's possible that the #1 team plays #4, while the #2 team plays #6...but them's the breaks.

And if Team #1 can't beat Team #4 (instead of #6, for example) then what makes you think they can win the Champjonship?

In round 2, the highest-ranked team plays the lowest-ranked team not in the same division, much like the real-life MLB playoffs. Home advantage always goes to the team with the better record. This could theoretically lead to a situation where, if the Kill and Swingers get the wild cards and both win in round 1, while the Squeaks win the division, the Squeaks have to play the other non-wild card team in round 2, while the wild cards play each other (since three of the four teams in round 2 will be from the Mantle Division). But I see that as an oddity rather than a problem. It's easier, I think, to mirrior MLB where possible, and the above does that.

And, of course, I'd have to win a postseason game for the series of events above to occur, which isn't going to happen.

If there's going to be a not-in-the-same-division thing then shouldn't it happen in the first round only? If you do it in the second round then you're setting up a possible championship game between division rivals....

Is that any different than a NY-Bos ALCS?

In round 1, I don't want a division winner to have to play another division winner (a sort-of reward for winning their division), but in the following set of postseason winners:

    Ruth: Truth (15-8)
    Gehrig: Marauders (14-9)
    DiMaggio: Wolverines (16-7)
    Mantle: Squeaks (13-10)
    WC1: Kill (12-1)
    WC2: Swingers (10-13)

the Squeaks would either have to play another division winner (the Marauders), or one of the wild cards. Since they won the Mantle Division, I think the Squeaks should get to play a non-winner, and both the wild cards should have to face division winners. In theory, that's the penalty for sneaking in via a wild card. In round 2, I think of it that the wild cards have 'earned' their way into the playoffs, so the division matchup thing takes effect. I don't see any problem with having an intra-division championship game; that's how 2002 ended, with the Lords of Flatbush beating the wild card Cunning Linguists. With 3 teams theoretically coming out of the same division, it would be difficult (if not impossible) to prevent anyway. My math can't cope there.

I agree! If that were the case, and both of us win this week, our head-to-head matchup next week would be an elimination game with the winner getting the wild card. That would be great. But noooooooo, Sax is going to get it instead because he has more points, despite his pathetic, barely 500 record

Yes, because he's talking about our World Series, not our second round. The Yanks and Boston don't play in the WS. He's saying that It should be the first round where you can't play a division rival, which would be like MLB.

Sax is good like that, scoring all sorts of points but not winning many games. Heck, YanksAgain is good at it too. Last year they fininshed 1st and 3rd in overall points (or something close to that) and neither of them made the post season.

And then you have teams like the Squeaks and Truth who don't wow anybody with their points totals, but just win

I'm much more intrigued about the Kill going 12-1! I smell some shenanigans there!

    I like the 16-7 though.

...Oh wait, I'd rather be 17-6, sorry...
