Selig wants to make the game global???

I have read an article on MLB.com this morning about Bud Selig.

He wants to make the game global, but he doesn't want to stop the season because of the Olympic Games. This would not be in the interest of the game.

    What an arrogance!

Does he really think that organising an kind of world cup tournament will be in the interest?

What is a better opportunity to promote your game than the Olympics?

Why doesn't MLB do it like the Japanese do?
Every team donates a player to the national team and the competition can go on.

With his attitude, Selig will make baseball loose it's olympic status.

    Thanks a lot!!

You know what I would like, a world cup in Baseball that all the best players in the world participate in.

    Dominica
    Puerto Rico
    Cuba
    U.S
    Japan
    Canada
    etc

just make them play a series with everyone playing each other twice.
    It would be amazing.

Bud Selig is crazy. I know we wants to make the global, but to make the professional MLB players play baseball and have an Olympic break during the season.

The MLB players play 162 games during the regular season and if you add the games during Spring Training, the Olympics, and postseason, how much is too much?

As for the World Cup, it will be a good idea. The U.S. have a strong heritage in baseball with a Gold Medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and have a lot of talent and depth.

The rest of the teams don't have a lot of enough talent, right? EEEEE! Wrong. Don't be fooled by their lack of depth. The Dominicans have talent, so does Cuba and Japan.

Exactly, the Dominicans could easily put a team out there to challenge the U.S.

If you want to call yourself "World Champs", then get out there and prove it to the WORLD! We call our NBA Champs "World Champs", yet we can't even hang with the rest of the other Olympic teams.

I agree with the first sentence but trust me the U.S will win the gold

The whole world cup of baseball is the most brilliant thing that bud selig has done it it ends up falling through their will be great competiton
Their are alot of countries who will feild very good teams. Damn I can't wait till this happes. oh as far as the olympics goes for alot of the olympic competition most countries don't even feild their best players any way. but for the world cup idea it could become as popular as the world cup of soccer. All the MLB fans can see baseball talent form countries that bred players like Sammy Sosa(Dominican), Albert Pujols(Puerto rico) Just think about the competition this will be the best thing selig has ever done.

how is it possible for any one to be against this. It's just smart

I want to make Bud Selig global too... The owner should get together and pay for a "around the world" trip" so Bud can't screw up baseball any more...

I'll put money on 'no they won't'

If they even come close it will be thanks to one man and one man only, Tim Duncan

Does it depend where you reside, or ethnic background?

I could see it be very interesting if everyone played for their country of origin. I wouldn't think the US team should be made up of Martinez(es). Everyone should get to play for their own team.

Yes, he thinks that, and yes, he's right. A World Cup tournament is a much better idea than interrupting the mlb season to send players to the Olympics. Much like already exists in soccer, the World Cup will be the preeminent tournament, far superseeding the Olympics. It's a great idea, and one that I hope happens.

On a related note, it's high time that mlb (and the nba for that matter), take a page from the nhl and do an all-star game that isn't league v. league, but rather USA (or North America so we get Larry Walker ) vs the World. That would be great fun, and the players would get up for it way more than they do for the same old same old.

    World cup of baseball

first off i know they have a thread already about this but
i don't think they really touched the subject enough.

If the world cup of baseball where to happen I think it will be Selig's
greatest accomplishment. This will the turning point into baseball's future
these games will boast heavy competition for countries around the world

the first thought one might have is that the USA will dominate but if you think about it, these games will be great and entertaining just becasue of all the competition alone. and will raise baseballs popularity all around the world.

Lets talk about the competitors here are the participating countries
This trend is sure to continue, with more and more players coming from Asia and all across the globe. How good are the Japanese players? What country is producing the best major leaguers? Are American players developing as quickly as those from Latin America?

All those questions could be answered at least partially by a World Cup. The team from the Dominican Republic would be remarkable: Guerrero, Sosa, Pujols, Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano and Miguel Tejada would help the lineup, and Pedro Martinez would pitch Game 1.

A team from Puerto Rico, which would include, among many others, Pudge Rodriguez, Javy Lopez and Juan Gonzalez, would be formidable, as well.

The Cuban National team is among the best in the world. How good would it look with Rafael Palmeiro and Livan Hernandez?

The Japanese entry would be terrific, also. We've seen their best, with Ichiro, who has had three straight 200-hit seasons, Hideo Nomo, Kaz Sasaki, Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Hideki Matsui, who was, according to one Yankee, "our MVP'' in 2003. Kaz Matsui is also expected to make an impact with the Mets this season. The Japanese leagues supposedly are of Triple-A caliber, but that was of a few years ago -- now, it appears, it is decidedly better.

Bobby Valentine, who recently signed a five-year deal to manage a second term in Japan, says that "every position player in Japan could make a team in the major leagues.'' And, he says, that a classic utility player in the major leagues "would never start for the Tokyo Giants.''

But could a Japanese national team, or any team, challenge a team from the United States? Imagine that team. C: Mike Piazza. 1B: Todd Helton. 2B: Bret Boone. 3B: Scott Rolen. SS: Alex Rodriguez (although it's unclear which team he would play for. He has Latin roots, but was born and raised in the U.S.). LF: Barry Bonds. CF: Ken Griffey Jr. (healthy, of course, there are several other options if he's not). RF: Gary Sheffield. RHP: Mark Prior. LHP: Randy Johnson. Closer: John Smoltz. Imagine the five-man rotation, the depth of middle relievers and the bench.

It is a fascinating prospect, the best players in the game playing for their respective countries in a tournament that would be played in a time frame -- March -- when players are tired of spring training and anxious to play in a game that counts. These games would count, not for career records, but for their country, which to some, means a whole lot more.

It could be the first step toward someday having a true World Series, where the best team from the United States would play the best from Japan, or somewhere else in the world.

Think about it give me some opinions

Nothin'. I like the Olympic idea, but I don't know if will take a toll on the players.

    Let's go Lithuania!!!!

I'm all in favor of a real WORLD Series but I don't think the owners or player's union would go for it. In all probability it would mean less regular season games which reduces profits and salaries for the players.

By the way, does anybody know what compensation NBA or NHL players get for participating in the Olympics or if they get any at all?

Selig has proposed it, which basically means the owners are in favor it. The players union has already indicated they will go for it. The games would be played before the season starts, so there would be no reduction in regular season games.

He was - he was actually born here in NYC. His parents are Dominican, and they moved back there when he was 4, and then to Miami when he was 8.

I have absolutely zero interest in halting the baseball season for two weeks as the pennant races start to heat up (what do the players that don't go do during the two weeks do to stay in baseball shape, i.e. live pitching?). After watching what the men's basketball team has become where the best players don't even go anymore, no thanks.

I typically don't agree with the used car salesman, but I think that he's right in this situation. The NBA was able to globalize basketball with the Dream Team which takes place during the NBA offseason. This 2004 version has been playing badly, but the teams around the world are far superior to what they were 10 years ago.

The NHL has done the olympic team and it was a disaster. It hurt the NHL and the olympic teams they played for.

I think that Baseball would be better served with a world cup like soccer as long as it's played in the offseason. I would hate to see the MLB schedule disrupted for games that don't even count for my team.

I own MVP baseball for playstation and I spent hours changing rosters around to come up with 4 national teams. Count me in as a supporter for the baseball world cup. This is one of the few times i agree with Selig.

i think its a great idea. and i think its already a done deal. i was in japan for a while earlier this summer, and everywhere you go, there is this sign for USA vs. JAPAN in some epic baseball game some time ( i had to have it interpreted, and my translator didn't speak good english) i don't know when. but its already being heavily promoted there.

    bring it on.
    thank you, id like another
