I had him on my fantasy team this year and always liked him, even when he was a Yankee. Not to talk about him like he's dead but he always carried himself well and seemed to have great respect for the game. I wish him the best of luck in his recovery and rehab.

Looks like the yankees knew what they were doing. And I am positive that he did not "injure" it batting, he has had elbow problems before.

Ugh, I feel bad for Andy. I didn't like it when the Yankees let him enter his walk year without a contract opening the door for Houston, but Andy made the choice to leave. McLane and Hunsicker must be freaking out and I'm not feeling sorry for them at all.

And yes, they knew something was wrong since 2002 when he spent 2 months on the DL with elbow problems. That IS WHY they didn't want to seriously commit years and money to him this offseason, and it is why they didn't fight Houston that badly to retain him (especially when they knew they'd have to outbid them BIGTIME in order for him to not go hom). They deemed the risk not worth it, and they were right.

Well, maybe. I would guess he'd suffer some residual arm-strength issues next year, and by 2006 — well, a mid-market team like Houston can't be paying the Andy Pettittes of this world $17.5 million, even if he's 100%. It's a crushing burden on their payroll.

With my heart, I'd have taken Andy back in the wink of an eye. With my brain, I'd have let him walk also. At least Cashman made it look half-decent in encouraging Andy to play the FA market. You can't say that Andy didn't want to explore this, as he'd felt very comfy looking forward to his new home (which wasn't that far away from home).

Last season seemed like a career year for him, as he's never been consistent enough to do that regularly. See the '01 WS or the '98 ALCS as an example.

Since we're talking about investing $31.5M in him, and much more (like Colon money) had Cashman signed him, I can't see him wasting all that on a player who may not even spend a full season (or even two full out of 3 years) on that team.

At least we got some draft picks, and the parade that "We got Andy" has turned around, and the joke that "The Yanks let Andy walk" doesn't seem so funny anymore.

They didn't need anyone's buzz. He's had many elbow problems before, but since he didn't want to risk ending any contract discussions, he felt like playing through out.

He's got the $$$, but unless he can pitch well again, I'm not sure if he'll ever get another.

BTW, since he's going to Dr Andrews, is this TJ Surgery? If so, he may be out until spring of '06.

Exactly my thoughts all around. "Batting" my ass, his arm's been ready to fall off for a year or two now. I think most of the media isn't giving the Yankees the credit they deserve for this non-signing.

But I do wish him well, it's a shame, to have that kind of potential, and a good amount of it realized, but to have that kind of health problem. If he stayed in NY and didn't have that bad elbow, for his whole career, I think he'd be somewhere close or above 300 wins.

It has been a rough year for the Astros. They're no where near being competitive in the NL Central, Andy Pettitte is done for the year, and Clemens hurt himself last night. Can't get much worse.

Kudos to the Yankees front office and medical staff for making what looks like the right move.

Don't forget Jeff Nelson. Most people think the team let him walk after 2000 bec. he didn't get along with Joe-but after 1 more good yr with Seattle, he was never the same either.
