It's a shame to hear that Pettitte has to get surgery though not really all that surprising either. I hope the surgery and recovery goes well for him.

First of all - best wishes to Andy for a speedy recovery. I don't wish him success with The Astros but I do wish the best for his health.
Secondly, let's not give The Yankees too much credit. I guess I will never get over my insistence that The Yankees should have signed Andybefore the 2003 season. His past performance and history with the team demanded that he be signed long-term and I am sure both parties would have come to a reasonable and mutually satisfying agreement. I don't think The Yankees knew how bad his elbow really was. If they were so reticient about signing pitchers with "iffy" futures as far as health is concerned, they wouldn't have signed David Wells, Kevin Brown, Jon Leiber, or any other of the walking rehabs they have signed. Yes, I understand it was a more of an issue with Andy, as his contract would have been more expensive and for a longer term than any of the aforementioned pitchers, but still they could have and should have signed him! They blew it and now look good at Pettitte's expense.

Given Schmidt's timetable, Pettitte's having the surgery in-season might allow him to be ready for Opening Day. In retrospect, backloading his deal might not look like the smartest thing.
