Stat of the day: the A's in August

From 2001-2004, the Athletics are 68-20 in August.

Yeah, they won 20 straight games in 2002 from August 13 to September 4.

One reason for that record is that they had excellent pitching all these years. And many hitters seem to slump a bit in the dog days of august, so the better pitching usually carries a team.

Or actually, maybe more to the point ... October? I know the answer to that one ... eight and twelve, 2000-2003.

Good Point. They always have a strong second half of the season in recent years but the push they make to get into the playoffs causes them to fizzle out in Oct. That could change with such good pitching, but with the way Oakland loves to save money the window to win might be closing fast.

All their postseason appearances the last two seasons have been based on their mind-boggling August/September runs. They just love the stretch.
"He knew, as he went after that ball, that he had a decision to make," said Tony Clark, who watched the play unfold from first base. "Either you let the ball drop and try to minimize the damage, or you make the catch and pay the consequences. He knew that, no doubt about it, and he chose B."

    Zito, Hudson, Mulder.

Must be nice to have them huh?

Not that it matters once they reach the postseason.

Actually they have lost series on a few stupid moves : the Jeremy Slide that could have changed the momentum of game 3 in 2001, and the incredible baserunning blunders against the Red Sox last year.

The quality and championship potential of that team over the years is not even debatable.
