Kris Benson said he would sign a long term deal if traded to the Mets. It is not necessarily a move to theoretically put them over the top this year. It is a move to bolster their staff for years to come.
Thats probably a good move for the Mets. He was a high ceiling and Petersen can probably work wonders with him.

OT Note: lefty RP Ring (Chisox's #1 draft pick in 2002) who Willams drafted over A's prospect SP Joe Blanton, was traded last year to the Mets for Robby Alomar.

Seriously though, the Mets aren't going to make the playoffs. I'm guessing their thinking is that even if we don't make the playoffs this year, we still get a pitcher who is just starting to reach his potential and could become a very good pitcher for us. It's stupid but that's what they are thinking.
