Thread: laugh now if you want but we will be back

Fenway Park goes dark now. For a while. No "Sweet Caroline." No "Dirty Water." No "Tessie" sweeping up on the big board while the Dropkick Murphys send everybody home with a smile. The only activity at the yard in the next 11 days will be the Sox grounds crew pondering where to put the World Series logo in the grass behind home plate. Dan Shaughnessy

Don't you have some profanity laden PM's from a boston.com sports editor on an ego trip to attend to?
Because the Marlins are appealing this verdict and because I know very little about the actual case other than the verdict, I can not comment yet on this. And I'm not going to comment on ridiculous remarks from a pitcher. Tying two inaccurate things together is something I should expect from no-name imbeciles. - John W. Henry, Owner, Boston Red Sox

I absolutely cannot believe that the Herald allowed that ad to be placed. Cannot believe it. If I were a Red Sox fan, I'd boycott the paper. Stirring the pot when the Yankees came to town.
"He knew, as he went after that ball, that he had a decision to make," said Tony Clark, who watched the play unfold from first base. "Either you let the ball drop and try to minimize the damage, or you make the catch and pay the consequences. He knew that, no doubt about it, and he chose B."

Ha Ha Ha that is funny. Not as funny as when they flew the plane over Boston during the ALCS last year but it is still pretty good.

Here's the thing Alex. The Red Sox play it up too.

So what's the difference between the low lifes at the Boston Herald and the low lifes in the executive office on Yawkey Way?

The article mentions that the Herald has a counter ad, can someone post it? They don't show it in the article.
"He knew, as he went after that ball, that he had a decision to make," said Tony Clark, who watched the play unfold from first base. "Either you let the ball drop and try to minimize the damage, or you make the catch and pay the consequences. He knew that, no doubt about it, and he chose B."

I see. I'm recalling what you said in the other post about this stuff... interesting.

    Whats "PM's"?
"He knew, as he went after that ball, that he had a decision to make," said Tony Clark, who watched the play unfold from first base. "Either you let the ball drop and try to minimize the damage, or you make the catch and pay the consequences. He knew that, no doubt about it, and he chose B."

One more nail in the coffin of the "New Yorkers don't care about this rivalry" argument.

The Herald's response (on the opposite page) said: "Screw the Curse. Go Sox! Kick their pinstriped butts!"

Pretty funny stuff by the Daily News. Of course, it wasn't as good as what the Post did earlier in the season.
“I mean, people knew that Brown was out there, and that Randy was ornery all the time. And Pavano is whoever he is. But if you’re their manager, you can’t go out and write about them like that.

I think that when you look at the past positions with other organizations, public statements, and actions of the ownership group it paints an extremely unflattering picture of the hand Red Sox fans have been dealt once again.

    Essentially, they're turds.

I don't think anybody has or should say that. This is the MAIN rivalry for the Yankees and we certainly do care very much about it. I think the argument that was being made on the board (which I didn't agree with) is that it isn't a real rivalry because of the lopsided results, and that it's only a rivalry to the fans. It didn't make sense to me, but it's certainly a different argument than you imply in your post.

The New York Times owns the Globe, but it's published on Morrissey Blvd in Dorchester.

The difference being that Kraft learned his lesson with his first team while these guys are on their 2nd or 3rd teams and still don't get it.

Actually, I should have been more clear. You're right, you don't hear that much here. I'm more referring to the people on the street who say things like this. Frequently in Boston you'll hear people (people who wish they live in NYC) say how Boston has this inferiority complex and New Yorkers don't care about what happens up here--then they'll site the Sox-Yankees as an example. If I remember correctly, Boston magazine even had a cover story about this last year. I also have plenty of friends in NY who make the same argument.

I think that was the Post. Or did they do something else? I know the Post did something last year.

As for the Daily News's picture, well, hee! They certainly love that drawing, since as far as I know, this is the third time they've whipped it out in under a year. They had it in the paper (not in color, though) the day after Game 7 last year (which is the one I have on my wall), they had it in the paper (in color) during the last Red Sox/Yankees game that took place in the Stadium (and told people to bring it to the game; I think they were used to count strike-outs), and now this. I don't know if it's in the Daily News today since I haven't picked it up yet but if it is, hee again.

Hmmm... weird. I think people in general just think locally, you know. But baseball is the thing that ties these two cities together. Otherwise, it'd be just another city.

BTW, I lived in Boston for 2.5 years. I loved it. Still do. I loved everything about it except the team.

Actually, Pedro's Cuff has very specific and researched feelings about ownership up there. He may have summarized his thoughts here because he doesn't feel like hashing through it all over again. But anyway....

That is the great thing about baseball, ya never know

ask the 64 Phillies, the 51 Dodgers and yes the 78 Red Sox

You're right. Overconfidence makes me extremely nervous. But at least I know it's overconfidence on the fans part - and the media which just panders to fans. The players themselves, I believe and hope, would be smarter than that.
"He knew, as he went after that ball, that he had a decision to make," said Tony Clark, who watched the play unfold from first base. "Either you let the ball drop and try to minimize the damage, or you make the catch and pay the consequences. He knew that, no doubt about it, and he chose B."

Yes, we all know that the succes and failure of a major league baseball team lies in how overconfident the front page stories in the papers are

The only counter ad they could show would be the 1918 WS championship team.

Ouch...... thats a low blow. I can see some similarities between the 78 Yanks and 04 Sox A dominant pitcher (Guidry/Schil), a pretty good cast of charachters up and down the lineup, one of the most feared hitters in the game (Reggie/Manny). The one X-Factor is that we had a closer that could close out games

Well, the Red Sox manager has not yet "resigned" after drunkenly calling a star player a born liar, and an owner a convicted liar. And as far as I know, the Boston newspapers are not going on strike anytime soon. So I think the comparison only goes so far.
