Dodgers Should Make a Bid for RJ

Looking at the Dodgers, they have what it takes, esp. w/ their utterly sick (in a good way) bull pen. They make it a six inning game for the other team, but their rotation is suspect. Of all the teams out there, I think Dodger & RJ would make a GREAT fit.

    Theoretical winners need not apply.

I would think RJ wouldn't mind going to the Dodgers. He'd be closer to his family (than if he were on the East Coast), not change leagues and go to a good team. But obviously, I don't know if he would nix a trade to LA or not.

I think he made it clear that location really doesn't matter, only winning does.

They also have two teams in their division within 3.5 games. If the reports that he only wants to go to the Yankees and Cardinals are true, then it seems pretty obvious he is only interested in teams that seem to be a lock for the playoffs.

Unfortunatly for the Dodgers, the team appears to be opperating under a different philosophy under new ownership. Frank McCourt and GM Paul DePodesta want to opperate the team in the 80-90 million dallar payroll range.

While they might be inclined to want to rent Randy for this year to counteract the wave of negative press that McCourt suffered from day one as new owner, not to mention the Angels market encroachment under very popular new owner Arte' Moreno, adding RJ's contract for next year would be counter to their goals for 05'. They will still be burdened by the contracts of Green and Dreifort next year. RJ would require a business model change that I do not believe is forthcomming.

Sadly for Dodger fans, I guess showing up 3 million strong every year through the past 14 years of mediocre to awful on field product just dosn't count for much.

I don't know if those reports are true or not. I but I know the Dodgers are pretty good bet to make the playoffs--obviously not as much as the Yankees are.

I do agree w/ Socal that the Dodgers just don't seem to be willing to spend much $$. But the Dodgers w/ RJ would be a very formidable team, IMO.

True and the reason I fear Beltre and Perez won't be back (actually, Perez is more because he hates being a Dodger).

But, theoretically, who would you think AZ would ask for in return? In the recent past, everyone has wanted some combination of Odalis Perez, Edwin Jackson, Greg Miller, Guillermo Mota, but Jackson and Miller are off-limits. There are a number of other very worthy infield/catching/pitching prospects from whom to choose as well.

This is from Jayson Starks chat...

Jayson Stark: Paul DePodesta told me recently he only wants to deal for an impact player and doesn't care if it's a starting pitcher or a middle-of-the-order bat. They'll wait another week or so to see if Carlos Beltran goes back on the market, I'm sure, because they were one of the teams involved on him before Houston traded for him. If Beltran isn't available, they may have to debate Larry Walker's pros and cons. They love Steve Finley, from all accounts. But Arizona doesn't seem to want to move him or the Unit inside the division. If LA deals for a hitter, it could turn around and deal someone like Dave Roberts for a starter.

I would imagine the Dodgers would go for a big bat. Their pitching has, for the most part, been fine this year. RJ wouldn't be as big as a bat.

And no reason to give up their future either. They have some of the best prospcets in the game right now (Jackson, Miller, Loney, others) and dealing them off for an aging pitcher would be pretty foolish.

No reason to mess up their bullpen either which is easily one of the best in the league. Giving up Mota? 7-3 with a 1.97 ERA right now would be insane.

I do expect, however, the possibility of a big bat. I expect it to be an outfielder or 1st baseman. Their OF is Roberts, Bradley, Encarnacion, and Green who also plays 1st base with Ventura/Saenz also.

A bat at either of those positions would be good given their flexibility. I'd expect a guy who has power (given that Dodger Stadium is a major pitcher's park) and good on base power (fitting both the mold of DePodesta and also the park).

Immediately names that come to mind: Delgado, Sweeney, Beltran, and possibly Finley.

They also don't score for beans. One of the key reasons he's PO'ed is because of the non-existing run support.

    How come?

Has Miller pitched this year because I thought he was inured?

Dodgers dont need starting pitching, they need offense.

I agree a bat would be good, too, but I also think their stellar pen has hidden a suspect rotation.

The reason to go for it now (arm or bat) is you don't know if Beltre is for really for real or how the setup guys will be next year. (Pens have a way of being inconsistent year-to-year.) Even Shawn Green looks like he's getting hot (well for him anyway). I think the boys in blue should strike this year while the iron is hot. The NL seems as wide open as it's been in a long time. Besides the Cardinals, no NL team looks very formidable.

Beltran is the obvious choice. He gives McCourt the likelihood of a playoff birth in his first season at the helm without commiting the team to more salary for next season.

Fans and press will have to acknowlege that ownership stepped up.

The Dodgers reportedly have the prospects to make it happen.

Win win all the way around.

The RJ thing is making the rounds out here again. Maybe I was wrong about McCourt's willingness to pay Randy next year. (It would not be the first time).

It would certainly address McCourt's PR issues here in the short term.
