The guy was chirping at the umps up 5 runs in the 9th inning. Granted the Yankees have had a number of comeback, but simmer down. He seemed to whine after every call. Could he have been more ridiculous?

I agree. Bob Brenly has to cool down. He criticized former Padre Ben Davis about the Bunt Pop-up for a hit that broke Curt Schilling's chance for a no-hitter.Originally posted by CyYoung4Vazquez

Its been brought up before, but the Umps have been pretty terrible this year. Did you see that pitch Rivera made 2 nights back that was a perfect strike, and was called a ball, twice in a row

And there were two horrendous calls against the Mets last series. It was absolutely ridiculous - 2 outs at 1B that were called safe and some really bogus balk calls on Traschel.Originally posted by RhodeyYankee2638

Its Obvious Brenly, with even a 5 run lead and 2 outs in the 9th felt uncomfortable against the yankees... Jesus Id hate to see inside this guys head in the 1st through 6 innings! Just goes to show you what kind of reputation the yankees bring along with them.
There was another bad call earlier in the game that led to him being angry in the 9th. I don't blame him. Sierra should have been struck out on the check swing, and the following two pitches.
The Yankees have all the financial advantages, no need to give them extra outs in the 9th inning, even if MLB believes they are Gods gift to all of us.

I think questec has a lot to do with the horrible umpiring
In Yankees games, I have seen two blown, game ending calls at the palte... I have seen foul balls called home runs.... I have seen terrible calls made at first base..... Questec has absolutly nothing to do with thatOriginally posted by REDSOXIN2004

Home plate ump in game 2 of Boston-Colorado was atrocious -- inconsistent w/everything but his inconsistency. He was wide left, wide right, then calling same pitches strikes; ditto for chest and knees. Perhaps the worst ball-strike umpring I've ever seen. (And he was bad for both teams, btw -- maybe the only thing he did "right" all night...)

Actually, after multiple showings I think it was actually foul. He caught it on the foul side.Originally posted by BoSox37

UPN showed multiple camera angles. Most of them showed that the ball was clearly in far territory, one angle looked inconclusive. I thought it was gone.Originally posted by MaineSoxFan

Folks, I'm willing to bet that the umpires, who are right on top of the action, have made the right call in all these situations. It is very easy for fans to second guess umpires, but they are on the field for these plays. I'll defer to them, instead of any armchair umpires who think they could do better. Infrequently, umpires will make the wrong call. Fine. But for a majority of the time, these umpires are doing their job, and doing the best they can. That's all we can ask.

I'd take that bet. Just b/c they're "trying" doesn't mean they're right. It also doesn't mean that they shouldn't do better. (Complaining that they ought to do better, btw, does not imply that any of us think we could do better; by that logic, I guess we can't criticize any players or managers, either. Or CEOs. Or politicians. etc.)
Btw, though, there weren't any good angles on the NESN feed, but it looked like it was probably foul.
We're not saying they don't get most calls right... I mean, that's what they get paid for, so I should hope so. But... the 2 plays at 1B that were blown in the Mets game were extremely clear with or without replay. The foul ball in the Twins/Expos game didn't need any kind of replay either to show that it was a foul ball. Of course they can't be perfect, we're just saying that they have been a bit extra less than perfect this year.Originally posted by KP88

With all due respect cubs, like I said, it's easy to second guess anyone who holds any of your above mentioned positions. If they're wrong, then I will take your word for it. But people have staked their careers on trying to prove these people wrong, and they are usually debatable.Originally posted by cubswin

(last take on the Nixon ball: Sox fans in the area were apparently saying it was foul. I think what happened was that he caught it in foul ground and was pushed toward fair ground, w/his arm and glove leaning in front of the pole -- thus the appearance of catching it in fair ground.)
All that said, I still think the ump[s are doing a worse job this yr than last yr or any other yr in recent memory. The Sox / Rocks game was one ex. (And KP88, I get your point and agree re. those who do nothing but 2nd guess, but the fact that players from both teams, and both hitters and pitchers, were complaining nonstop was a good indication of that ump's performance. This, btw, is one reason I am for the instant replay in the NFL -- the umps are human, and they will make mistakes, and to the extent that you can prevent those mistakes, I think you owe it to the players and fans to do just that.)
Fair enough, cubswin. I'll defer to that, Well put.Originally posted by cubswin
