I know it doesn't take much (a number, name ... whatever) when you're a youngster to pick a favorite.
Who was your favorite Yankee as a youngster?
Me, I went with Jerry Mumphrey. (Got his basball card and found out we had the same birthday)

"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."
Donnie. (Real original, I know...) On the mound, I was a Raggs fan.
There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

If I had 3 wishes... One of my wishes would be to make a select few of you Pirates Fans.
Nettles.
When I started playing in the little league Jerry Coleman was playing second base which happened to be the position my coach put me at. Therefore, I became a Coleman fan and even though he wasn't one of the big stars for the Yanks he was a very good defensive second baseman who got a lot of clutch hits for them and also served his country along with Ted Williams during the Korean war. I believe he is still an active broadcaster with the Padres.![]()

Started out with #7, The MICK!
After Mickey retired I didn't really have a favorite player till Reggie and then I wasn't a kid.
"Enjoy every sandwich." Warren Zevon
How can you pick a favorite out of Scooter, Joe D, Mick, Yogi, Whitey and Allie?
One player I followed closely and hoped he would make it was Jimmy Brideweiser.
Andy
Yogi is a National Treasure. Let's put him in a National Hall of Fame. The man has no peers.

Mickey Mantle

My timeline:
Nettles
Mattingly
O'Neill
Rivera
I was looking at my old Nettles bb cards the other day. He had arms the size of drinking straws. It looks like he was allergic to the gym. I almost forgot he led the AL in homers one year with THIRTY TWO! Back then, though, he could do no wrong in my book.

i, being younger than most of you, have always liked the five same players:
tino
jeter
rivera
bernie
mattingly
though i do like a bunch of guys thanks to yankeeography...although it can make anyone look good
You've got nothing to believe in but believing in yourself.
Bobby Murcer
Guidry, Munson and Mattingly. Still are.
Special moment of mine also was hanging out with Omar Moreno with the short time he was with the team. I knew his cousin that worked at Newark Beth Israel. We would go to the games and hang out in the players parking lot after the game and chat with players like his friends at the time Jose Rijo and Willie Randolph.
I have several pictures of Omar and myself hanging out at his cousins in Montclair, NJ. If I had a scanner I would post them and get them up here so everyone could see them. Perhaps I will have to do that in the near future.
I wonder if he knows Mo. He is from Panama as well and one of his best friends was Tony Pena.

Roy White. Always liked The Quiet Man.
Donnie Baseball without a doubt.

Mattingly indeed...Being born in 1980 many of my friends became Mets fans because 1986 was when we started understanding what baseball is. I was always a fan of Donnie's though. It started because he's a lefty as well.Originally posted by yanksrule69
Donnie Baseball without a doubt.
Dave Winfield
Mattingly. He was THE man when I got into the Yankees, and baseball in general.
Mattingly and Winfield. I didn't know who to root for during the batting title race.
Never Trust A Man With No Shirt On
Donnie Baseball!
Go Yanks!!!!!!
As a kid?
No brainer...REGGIE!!!!!
Also loved Guidry, Willie and Goose...
Later on, as a young teenager, hands down with Donnie Baseball...
To paraphrase Joe DiMaggio..."Every day, I thank the good lord for making me a Yankee fan"
THERE IS MORE TO BASEBALL THAN JUST NUMBERS!!!!
I was growing up during Mickey's last few years. I starting liking him 'cause my Dad liked him so much. My favorite "own discovery" was Thurman. He's STILL my favorite.
And, btw Kevin, Thurm was the Straw!![]()
....
Nettles...wrote E-5 on every glove that I had.
Munson, Bucky and Reg-gie!![]()

Murcer. Most everybody who began following the Yankees in the late 60s was a big Murcer fan. He was going to be the one to take the Yankees out of misery and back on top.
Let the kids play.

Donnie B and Winfield..however, when I was in high school, I loved Danny Tartabull, even had a custom-made jersey made!
The Candy Man Can!!! He brought excitement to the game, even if his best work did come in October. Hey, what's wrong w/that?

Ive got 2- First Joe Pepitone-He was such a colorful character and had a great swing for the short right field porch. I read his book-"Joe, You coula made us proud" and I was hooked.
Later on Thurman Munson- I guess I looked somewhat like him as many have told me, so I kinda gravitated towards him/ Even wrote a peom about him and sent it to the Yankees and the Daily News back then.
I'm not lpiniellafan because I care about the Devil Rays.
I always got a kick out of Lou as a ballplayer, although I must admit I also remember Fred Stanley and Sparky Lyle somewhat fondly.
Tie between Joe Verbanic and Jerry Kenney.
Definately Munson. He died on my 11th birthday and I was devastated. The heart and soul of those 70's teams. Donny Baseball came along in '83 and all was well again. It's great to see him on the bench these days. Paulie took the torch through the championship run. It's great to hear him doing games on YES. Now I'd have to say it's Jorge.
"I'd like to thank the Good Lord for making me a Yankee."
Strike Out ALS!
Munson.
(Though all-time, my favorite was and still is Gehrig.)
Fantasy Baseball: Larrupin' Lou's; New York Knights.
When I was a kid it was Thurman. I still remember exactly where I was when I heard about his death.
As I got older it was Mattingly
Now that I have a son who plays baseball and is a SS it's Jeter.
I also have an affinity for Phil Lombardi who was a local product from where I live that got drafted by the Yanks.
Winfield and Mattingly.
And I am a huge Mantle fan even though he was before my time.
Geoff
Munson then and always will be.
Willie Randolph
Duh... David Cone
