    Colter Bean

Anybody know anything about him? At Columbus, he's pitched 22.2 innings, given up 12 hits and 5 walks, and has an ERA of 1.19 in 13 appearances. He's also struck out 27. Monster stats, even for AAA, although the innings are relatively light at this point.
    Let the kids play.

Has always been successful in the minors. Has a motion supposedly similar to Jeff Nelson in addition to similar pitches though his fastball is in the 80s. Teams apparently think that despite dominating minor league action he won't succeed in the majors because lefties will kill him due to his lack of velocity.

If I remember right Bean originally came up with the Pirates but I could be mistaken. I seem to remember also something about him and Boston and the Rule 5 draft but it's escaping me right now. Bean doesn't have overpowering stuff and depends on deception and a low arm slot. He kills righties and if a team wanted a one or two batter situational releiver then he might succeed. It's surprising that for such a big guy he doesn't have more speed on his pitches. But from what I hear his fastball is around 84-85 mph. Bean is an intelligent pitcher and can manipulate the strike zone but if he doesn't at least get his FB up to 89 MPH I don't think he'll ever see the majors.

Boston had picked him up in the Rule V draft, but returned him to us.

The major league draft and the Rule V one are different drafts.

You're right DB. I don't know why I thought the Pirates. Brain burn. We got Bean out of Auburn I beleive in 2000.

I think we took Parrish in out first pick that year and passed on Adam Wainwright who the Braves scarfed up on the very next pick.

In 99 we took David Walling and passed on Jerome Williams, Colby Lewis and John Lackey.

Is Lin Garrett reponsible for these bad decisions?

I could have sworn that I heard Bean threw a screwball. If so, wouldn't he be effective against lefties?

I'm not sure about either, but I do know that potentially lacking the ability to get out major league left handed hitters has always been the knock on Bean.

When does he ever have the opportunity to get major league leftys out if he is stuck in the minors his whole career?

That's how I feel, don't kill the messenger.

Awful, awful picks. This is why the Yankees have so few good prospects.
