Using the stolen base as a weapon

Another aspect of the game that sabermetrics seems to put down is the stolen base. This is not necessarily the case. The stolen base is a useful tool when used appropriately. These articles explain the sabermetric view of the stolen base.

Heh, this reminds me. Neyer wrote an article a few months ago on an assumption that sabermetrics is bad for African-American players as a result of so little emphasis being placed on the SB.

"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."

Actually Neyer was refuting comments by Ralph Wiley and Richard Griffen. Neyer argued that Sabermetrics were color blind ...

Neyer made mention of the fact that it was insane for anyone to accuse Sabermetrics (Bill James specifically, since that's who Wiley attacked) of being racist because of how much praise James has had for Rickey Henderson and Tim Raines.

James continually calles Raines the 2nd best leadoff hitter of all time.

He said Rickey was the best, and if you cut him in half, he would be two Hall of Famers.

In "Moneyball", SBs are only effective when the SB percentage is at 70% or higher.
