Will you then say that Curt Schilling is also the baseball equivalent to Bill Clinton when it comes to believability, since over the offseason he said he'd only accept a trade to the Phillies or Yankees?

Actually, I'd compare him to Hubert Humphrey, who was famous for not knowing when to shut up!

Ladies and gentlemen, we have bingo. Funny how we don't see one of these threads every time Barry Bonds hits a home run (which is quite often). Let it go people. This is not worth the space that has been devoted to it.

Basically, what I'm seeing here is pretty much every Boston fan defending Manny. Gee, what a surprise.

If Arod were in the same position as Manny, and hit a huge homer off Pedro in a game in which the yanks were losing, you don't think Pedro would get pissed????

    Please.

In that situation, every single Boston fan would bash the hell out of Arod and defend Pedro's right to get pissed at somebody showboating.

Fact of the matter is, when you're losing, in fact losing by a considerable margin, YOU DO NOT SHOWBOAT. Period. And standing in the box, watching a homer sail away, is showboating in baseball. Manny, look at the scoreboard. Show some class: start jogging toward first and watch your shot as you run. To do what he did is as ridiculous as a University of Miami defensive end dancing and whooping it up after a sack in a game when they are down by two touchdowns. When you're losing..... BE HUMBLE.

And i see every Yankee fan go out of their way to attack Manny, hence the reason why this topic has grown as large as it has. My point is that the only reason this thread has gotten attention is because it is Manny, and people like to crap on him. Don't give me some bull argument about the classless nature of the act itself, because at other times when such acts occur, they go unmentioned (for example, a thread titled 'Bonds' Showboating). This has to do with fans wanting to dump on a Sox player, and nothing more.

I'm going to conduct a scientific survey this week, using all of the technology available in modern society (my mouse, a pen, and a piece of paper) to see which team's fans use this smiley>< the most when they don't agree with someone.

If any sane outsider ever looked at us yapping back and forth they would laugh like hell!

    Wake and Steve,

That is all fine and good. But the point still stands: when you're losing, you don't showboat. Period.

Again, you think PEDRO would put up with that???

    Hell no.

I even made a thread in spring training that I found Tom Gordon's celebration to be a bit excessive (though I've since found out it's a tribute to family members he's lost). That being said, if Davis has such a problem with Manny watching his homer for a sec he should plunk him next time they face each other. There's no sense in barking at him.
ForceFive and pacewon, you guys are right, IMHO. Showboating and baseball don't work for me unless you're talking about the All-Star Game and/or the homerun contest. Soriano drove me nuts last year when he'd stop and stare. I'm surprised more pitchers didn't try to hunt him down.

Having said that, I'd love to see Manny vs. Bob Gibson (in his prime)....

I was just thinking the same thing. I feel dumber for having read as much of this thread as I did. Somehow I just kept thinking to myself, 'maybe the next post will justify this thread being 3 pages long. Nope. Well, maybe the next post will justify this thread being 3 pages long. Nope. Well, maybe the next post....' Can someone please give my the last 3 minutes back? I promise I won't waste them again.

Jim Rome went off on Manny for about 10 minutes today. Wilbon and Kornheiser went off on it during Pardon the Interruption. Those are two huge nationally-based sports programs, none of whom are Yankee or Sox fans (as far as I know). And I find it hard to believe they were the only sports personalities to discuss the merits of this subject today.

This isn't just a "Yanks fans piling on Manny/Sox fans defending him" issue. I think it mertis discussion, and it seems so do many on this forum.

I'm not sure he is the "best". There are a lot of "9 yr olds" in the game.
Ramirez does seem to get silly at times about balls two feet from his head but he is not the only one that does it. It's up to the Sox to decide what their standards and rules of conduct are. I think he looks silly at times but I'm not paying his salary so it matters little.

ESPN LOVES to turn small incidents into high drama. There was no brawl (fortunately). No big deal. When I hear the word "pimp" I think of disgusting bloodsuckers. Damon might responded better but now that the press has figured out that he is often good for a quote they will be trying to get him to say entertaining things for them to quote (in case they are not in the mood to make up a "quote").

I heard someone on the radio today stating that Ramirez was basicly to blame for the loss because he struck out in the 9th to end it. That was the 27th out for the Sox. Did Ramirez make them all? He is one of the last Sox players that should be blamed for their recent slump.

Basically what I've gathered from all of this is that the national media has taken another opportunity to crap on the Sox. They hate Manny because he won't talk to them.

If anyone can convince me with solid reasoning that Ruth calling his shot wasn't showboating, then I'll be convinced that this isn't just another Sox bashing.

So funny I forgot to laugh....

I can't be the only one who thinks the whole "pimp" phrasing is sexist. And racist, too (if you've seen The Hughes Brothers' American Pimp you know what I'm talking about).

Damon should have used a better word....

I could be that you're just a bit out of touch with what's hip. 'Pimp' and 'pimpin' have joined the 'cool' youth venacular. It's sort of like when kids would say something was 'dope' or 'phat' meaning good. If you're pimpin it's a good thing. Damon didn't make that up, he's just up to date on his street lingo. He's a cool pimpin daddy who's in touch with his peeps, ya heard?

Consider me shocked, SHOCKED, that Manny took a gander at a homer. The audacity! I have NEVER seen anyone else do that.

He's a bad person, kills children, and was responsible for the Holocaust from what I hear. He also funds Bin Laden.

    Incredibly compelling stuff as always.

Schilling had been concerned that Fenway Park was unfriendly to right-handed fly ball pitchers and that's why he made that comment.

Theo came to Arizona and showed him how untrue that was. In reality Schilling found out that Fenway Park is a worse home run park than the BOB [Bank One Ballpark in Arizona] is.

IF that wasn't the case, Schilling might still be in Arizona. He was misinformed when he makde that statement. Nothing more, nothing less.

I wasn't trying to belittle Schilling, just showing stevethesoxfan that A-Rod had the right to change his mind the same way Schilling did.

I have no problems with what ARod did. I would have sold my soul to the devil to get out of Texas.

The way I see it...if it's ok for a batter to "pimp" after a HR while losing by a few runs, then it should also be ok for the pitcher to pop one in his ribs the next time he comes up.

I know it's not exactly the right thing to do...but I would most likely do it.
There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Anyone who questions Manny's character just doesn't know anything about him. This isn't a fault or anything, but not many people know about him. They don't know how when players on his team get fined, he picks up the check (example, two years ago during the brawl with Baltimore, he paid the fines for all the people involved, including Hillenbrand who was making the league minimum) or that he also is the first person to the park, and the last to leave, how he works endlessly to improve not just his hitting, but also his fielding, and many other things.

His character should never be in question, he has one of the best characters in baseball. But, as most humans tend to lack, he's not perfect, he makes mistakes. He's in a big market and it's going to be blown out of proportion.

Alright, that's enough Manny love for now.
