Thread: Should Veritek be in pinstripes?

    Should Veritek be in pinstripes?

I love Posada, none better. Flaherty is so so. What would be wrong with trying to trade away Flaherty and get Veritek when we are able? I suggested it to a friend and he went off the deep end.

I highly doubt Jason Varitek would take well to being a backup catcher. Jorge's not going anywhere anytime soon, nor would I want him to.

    Exactly.
Why would Varitek be a backup? He's one of the best in the league.
Nah. Never happen, nor would I want it to.

    I actually really like JV.
There have always been Red Sox players that I've admired through the years, even as I've "hated" the team.
Yaz (of course), Freddy Lynn, Luis Tiant etc.

On this team, it's Varitek and Nomah.

That would be like getting Chavez to back up ARod. Or similar. I think we should concentrate on being solid at each spot in the field before worrying about all-star quality backups.

Did you ever think MVP A-Rod would move to 3B for any reason? Never say never.

I think those are the only two on the team I do like too, they were college buds together. maybe they will do the Pettitte-Clemens dance?

I didn't think he would either, but I know he wouldn't have gone to another team to be a back-up. Also, do you think that even the Yankees would pay anywhere from 8-10 million a year (Boras money) for a back-up catcher? It would be crazy for Varitek to be willing to be a back-up in the prime of his career and the Yankees would be crazy to pay that kind of money for a back-up catcher.

You say never to say never? Well my ass is saying never...As someone pointed out above, it would be exactly the same as signing an Eric Chavez to back up A-Rod. The sheer suggestion that one of the best players in the game at his position would sign a multi-year deal to become a back-up for another guy that he's just as good as is flat-out ludicrous, even for a Yankee fan to suggest...

...and at least have the common decency to spell the man's name correctly in the thread title...it's Varitek, not Veritek.

wow, some of you are really angry people, just trying to have a civil discussion. I won't bother coming on this board anymore.

Varitek is my least hated Red Sox.

However, I don't see how it makes any sense to have him and Jorge on the same team (for either the team or the players). A decent part of their value is that they are such good hitters for Catchers.

Jorge is getting to the age where the Yanks have to start thinking about getting him a few starts for him at 1B and DH. However, Varitek is way too good of a player to be a back up.

If we didn't have the DH concerns with Williams and Giambi, he'd be a good fit. He's a good defensive catcher, a great hitter, and would make a good C/DH. We'd be assured that Poasada and he would get ample rest.

But we have those concerns, so this makes zero sense.

I don't think anyone was being uncivil. Just because they didn't sugar coat their feelings doesn't mean they are angry. If you choose not to return to the board, that is your decision, but everyone around here seems to take things pretty seriously, yet nobody holds hard feelings.

Just cause you posted something that 30 different people said is preposterous, doesn't mean we don't like you!

I think the Yankees should get every player, as per that Onion article a couple years back. 162 intra-squad games, fu'd up by the intamural championship.

And how many DHs would the Yanks have, btw, after getting tek and Beltran? Maybe you can also change the rules to add a "short-fielder," so that more guys can play.

You know, cubswin, just about everybody here noted that this was a silly proposition, however you felt it necessary to again paint every Yankee fan as "wanting" this....

    Why?
It's like all you Sox fans here just can't WAIT to jump down our throats on every thread.

? Are you sure you were reading my post? Where did I "paint every Yankee fan as 'wanting' this"? Seems to me that you just couldn't WAIT to jump down my throat.

Hmmm, ripping down one generalization with another...classy.

I knew a thread with EVERYONE posting in agreement was too good to be true on this board
