    Boston’s Cone alters windup, results
After intense film session, starter rebounds with good outing

BRADENTON, Fla., March 8 — David Cone watched three television monitors the morning after his own horror show. One showed Greg Maddux, another Bret Saberhagen in his prime and the third Cone himself as he struggled the previous day. Boston pitching coach Joe Kerrigan pointed out what Cone did wrong and the others did right. It opened Cone’s eyes.

“I TOLD JOE IT was an epiphany,” he said. “He got all over me for using that word. He said something about ‘do it in the game.’ ”

    That’s what Cone did Thursday.

In three innings, he allowed one run and three hits and struck out Jason Kendall on a hard slider in Boston’s 9-8 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates. He even lined a single to right field in his only at bat. “It was a bullet,” Cone said with a laugh.

On the mound, he looked like a different pitcher than the one who allowed two homers and five runs in the first inning of his spring training debut last Saturday, a 7-1 loss to Texas.

That’s because, at Kerrigan’s suggestion, he changed his delivery and threw more over the top. He did plenty of tinkering last season but still finished 4-14 with a 6.91 ERA for the Yankees.

But the video session the day after his disaster showed what he didn’t see all last year with New York.

“Nothing seemed to work,” Cone said. “I came here with an open mind, and now I’m glad I did.”

One reason he signed with Boston was to learn from Kerrigan and bullpen coach John Cumberland, whom he worked with when he was with the New York Mets.

“They really found the flaw in my mechanics that I was looking for,” Cone said. “It really bothered me all last year that I couldn’t find exactly where my flaws were in my delivery.”

The TV demonstration included a frame-by-frame analysis of the three pitchers’ deliveries. The aim was to make Cone’s windup more compact and consistent so he would release the ball at the same spot on each pitch.

“He gets in better throwing position,” Kerrigan said. “It’s a foundation. (We’ll) see if he can build from there.”

The adjustment was easy because Cone has altered his delivery throughout his career. He used an overhand motion during his time with Kansas City and the Mets from 1986 through 1994.

“It seemed to come naturally for me,” he said. “It gave me better body control. I was able to really control my rhythm and my tempo.”

Cone improved his chances of winning a spot in the rotation behind Pedro Martinez. He thinks he might even be the No. 2 starter.

He’s paying little attention to next Thursday, when the guaranteed portion of his $1 million salary increases from $163,934 to $245,902 if he’s still with the team. He said the club has been very encouraging and hasn’t mentioned that date.

Meanwhile, Cone will continue throwing before his next start, set for Tuesday.

“I don’t want to get too ahead of myself or sound too exuberant,” he said, “but it does feel much better. The ball coming out of my hand feels much better. (That’s) another old spring training pitcher’s cliche.

“It’s really true. It just feels like I can throw the ball with less effort.”

    Good!
I want him to make the team (as if they have another pitcher outside of Pedro) so he can have his Boston heartbreak at the hands of The Yankees.
I hope it's Jorge that puts the nail in his coffin

Don't start crowing yet Coney. I seem to remember you had one good outing after you came back from Tampa last year. Then you went right back to what you were before a pitching machine.

Not me. Other than when he's facing the Yankees I want Cone to do well. He's fighting to extend his career by any means necessary and I hope he finds a way to succeed. I think I'm in the minority though!

Good. He'll make the rotation. But he still didn't get a win today, which is something he couldn't do in all of May, June, or July of last year.

I said it before and I'll say it again, Poor Coney he's gonna help the Yanks beat Boston yet another year.

Big question is can he put together five solid innings in a row back to back. I'm not so sure that he can.

I do think he could probably have success out of the bp and that would have been better for him at this point in his career.

Ive mixed feelings about Coney! I say that his best years have happened. That now he should retire that arm and give it a rest before it could get worse. Todays outing was ify to what he used to throw.

I'm rooting for Coney as well. Listen, it's not like he told the Yanks to take a hike and he'll play for them when hell freezes over. It really was a mutual parting of ways. At his age, they offered him 1-year at $500,000 ( an offer which has yet to be confirmed). He though better of himself than to be a possible 5th starter. Maybe he could have gotten 2 years, a better spot in someone's rotation. I don't blame him entirely.
"We understand that John Henry must be embarrassed, frustrated and disappointed by his failure in this transaction. Unlike the Yankees, he chose not to go the extra distance for his fans in Boston. It is understandable, but wrong that he would try to deflect the accountability for his mistakes on to others and to a system for which he voted in favor. It is time to get on with life and forget the sour grapes."

3 solid innings and he thinks he's back?

He showed many flashes of competence last year.

I seem to remember many of his starts last year where he pitched well for 3,4 innings and then wound up giving up 8 runs in the 5th or 6th.

    Count me among the condemnors.

I'm sorry I can't and will not pull for any redsux player! Joe gave him more breaks then anyone, even had him iin the ws when he didn't deserve it. Forget this loyalty to explayers. You know and I know they have no loyalty to old teams or fans. The business of baseball is money. Cone ripped us off last year and went to greener fields.

I hope Cone losses every game. Its good for the yanks.

Oh yea I recall him changing motions several time last year. One good game then BANG!

Plus what is this a dig on Mel and the other coaches:

"“Nothing seemed to work,” Cone said. “I came here with an open mind, and now I’m glad I did.”
One reason he signed with Boston was to learn from Kerrigan and bullpen coach John Cumberland, whom he worked with when he was with the New York Mets."

The YANKEES offer was a way to let CONE "quit" rather than be "fired". $500,000. is a pretty big welfare check.

I love Cone. I am not bitter that he is in Boston. By helping Boston to keep a strong sense of denial he is helping the YANKEES. Who knows? Without Cone in camp they might have stumbled on a decent starter. Go CONEY,,keep those idiots salivating.

My biggest issue with Coney is the way he's been taking backhanded shots at the Yankees and the coaching staff.

He freely admits to the fact that he didn't work out after the Yanks re-signed him for $12 million. To me, that's where I lost a ton of respect for him. The Yankees rewarded him with a huge contract (after a not so good second half, no less) and in his mind he doesn't have to go to camp in top physical shape. Yeah, right.

I heard all about how he felt great last year after every freakin' start. He had good stuff. Didn't know why it wasn't translating into wins. Joe Torre still threw him out there every 5th day, regardless of how bad he stunk the joint up. Now he talks about the new staff he'll be working with like the Yankees staff was a bunch of useless, know nothings.

I'm not saying that he means to be doing it. For all I know, he may not be aware of the fact that he is making Torre and Stot sound like they just stopped trying with him. But that's how it's coming off to me. And that is why I just can't root for the guy anymore.

I loved Cone even when he was a Met, a very difficult thing for me (gag!). And I can write off what he's saying, just like I did last year, as his difficulty in dealing with an athlete's mortality. But I cannot pull for anyone wearing that uniform!

last years "epiphanies" centered on how many inches left or right of the center of the rubber he would stand on. Most of us realized then that his career was over. This year it is "compactness of wind up". Wow...it only took him how many years in the majors to figure that out? Amazing.

Cone knows better, but he is assuming that Boston will not.

How cute David. You said the word "epiphany" on a baseball diamond. I guess the redsox owe you ten million bucks for that epiphany you had.

We can't wait to see how enlightened you will remain by this big epiphany in July and August. I suspect by then you will have found a new career.

Let's see how "epiphinated" you are when you get to YANKEE stadium David.

You are aproaching the "Ken Griffey" line on the ridiculous meter David. David we love you, go home. Don't end your career as a laughing stock rodeo clown in boston. Don't make us laugh at a guy that most of us have viewed as a very sharp classy individual. These epiphanies are a bit too much David.

The Arcangel Mikey is NOT going to deliver any divine intervention to your career. Do not mistake gas pain as an epiphany.

The question is BSD will he be an active Bosux in July & August?! I doubt it! His injuries will come back to haunt him & the Fans that he has. I think his "epiphanies" (can someone say elephantitus j/k) are his way of excusing his age and his shoulder/arm throw that used to be better than it is now for sure!

One thing for sure he can really get together with Boomer now and rag on us! Thats a sad shame for both of them!

I wonder what will be louder when he gets to Yankee stadium?
    The BOOS or the CHEERING!

I won't boo Coney. He has the right to make a living. But I do wish he'd stop babbling. I agree with Monica: whether he means to or not, it sounds as if he's taking shots at Torre & Stottlemyre. They were too good to him for too long to deserve that treatment.
