Sign up here for NYYFans.com Fantasy Baseball in 2004!

Hey there. If you'd like to play in the NYYFans.com 2004 Fantasy Baseball League Doohickey, please post below. I'm attempting to make starting arrangements in the next two weeks, as if we register the league before 1/28, we receive a $20 discount (and might get a better draft time, which would be nice). We're still in the process of finalizing the details, but here's what we can more or less guarantee:

    1) There will be a fee, probably of around $20, but not more than $25. Most of this fee will be a donation to the NYYFans.com website to keep it running. There may or may not be prizes, but if there are, the entry fee will also go towards that. The fee for the website will be $120 if we register in the next two weeks.

    2) The league is a head-to-head system, based on number of points scored by your roster per week. Points are scored through a system to be determined, but most major real-life scoring categories are represented, and the system should be balanced.

    3) There will be three divisions of six teams. The winners of each division, plus a wild card, will advance to the postseason. The postseason will consist of two rounds. The draft order will be random, but returning players will be able to select 3 or 4 "keeper" picks based on their rosters last season.

    4) Updates will be posted on this website weekly (if not more often) detailing the standings and results. You'll need to check your rosters at least weekly.

    5) Above all, this is a fun, relaxed, but competitive league of friends. If you don't intend to spend much time on this website, or are more interested in winning than taking part and having fun, you should think seriously about participating. However, if you're prepared to relax, play some baseball, and maybe make some friends, then put your name, intended team name, and whatever below. You'll also need an e-mail address and a way of paying money over the Internet - we'll get to that later.

If we get 18 or more sign-ups by midnight Friday, then all returning players will be entered, along with a random selection of newcomers (e.g. if 14 players return, then we randomly select four new applicants to join for 2004). If less than 18 sign up, then the entries remain open until we reach 18. As sson as we do, we will proceed to elect a commissioner.

If you haven't played before, you may choose an inactive team from 2003 to take over (random priority of picks). You may then choose keepers from this team as if you were the original owner. Altenatively, you may start with an empty roster, and draft without keepers.

One final thing: please do not sign up if you are half-hearted, or are not sure you want to play. The league will be seriously hurt by owners abandoning teams halfway through the season, or dropping out just before the draft. If you're worried that the final rules will not be to your liking, then the best way of avoiding that is to visit this forum and participate in discussions. Everyone here is reasonable, and wants to make this game fun and fair.

And with that, I'd like to announce that Saxmania's Swingers will return for another season, after failing to make the playoffs both previous years. Let's get ready to grumble!

The New York Squeaks will be returning to defend their division title and try to advance deep into the playoffs this year.

I'd also like to put in a good word for PinstripePride. He's an avid fantasy baseballer and a good guy who's been looking to get into the league for a while. I believe that he'd be an asset to the league.

I really want to play! I've never done this before, so y'all would have someone to trounce which will be great fun for you! I want to learn, though! I'll take over an inactive/unknown status team or start my own; I don't care. I just want to play, even if I get my butt kicked, which I will.

I do have a few questions. Does the fantasy league last for the whole real baseball season? Also, why are there two Ruth Divisions? What about those teams from last season whose statuses are unknown? Will they be replaced with newcomers? If I take over an inactive/unknown status team, may I change the name? Are there certain times of day (or days in the week) when everyone participates, or is it according to each person's schedule? I gather that rosters must be updated at least weekly, is that correct? Most importantly, how much time is involved, say, weekly?

Please sign me up! Can somebody put in a good word for me? I swear I'm a great competitor and want to have some fun with this, while learning from the coolest fans in the world! You guys rock!

I'd like my team name to be the Wildcats.

Can someone please answer my above questions at his or her earliest possible convenience? Thanks!

    Shalom,

    Jenn

    Jenn,

The fantasy season runs for 22 weeks, starting at opening day, but skipping the week of the All-Star Game. (Too few games to have a meaningful week). The playoffs are during the month of September.

The division that last year contained:

    9 Angry Playaz
    Evil Empire
    Larrupin' Lous
    Mattingley's Hitmen
    New York Squeaks
    Saxmania's Swingers

Should be called "Mantle Division", not Ruth.

First preference is given to teams from last year, but there will be at least one opening. If you take over a team, you can change the name and keep up to three of their players from last season. Last year's final rosters can be found here.

Last year rosters were locked weekly, beginning on Sunday. Any trades or add/drops are effective that day.

A full set up of the league as proposed by Saxmania (last year's commissioner, and the odds-on favorite to be Commish in 2004) can be found in an attachment, here

You can spend as much or as little time on your team as you want, but at least on Saturdays you should concentrate on who you want to activate from your bench and deactivate from your roster, since lineups lock overnight Saturday into Sunday. A lot of smack talk goes on in this forum, so whenever you check NYYFans.com, you should check out this board as well. In addition, all pending trades are announced here.

Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Fantasy Baseball: Larrupin' Lou's; New York Knights.

If we're "putting in good words" for people, add mine for Jenn. (jlw1980). I've seen a lot of her posts on the JC board, and think she could be good for our league. Besides, we need more women!

Because, even at this embryonic stage of the season, I suck royally. Fixed.

"Inactive" denotes teams that belonged to forumers no longer active on NYYFans.com. If they make a triumphant return in the next four days, then they'll be reactivated, but at the current moment they're expected to be available to newcomers. "Unknown" means that the owner is active, but hasn't announced his/her intentions for 2004. The total number of "Inactive" and "Unknown" slots on Friday at midnight will denote the number of new owners we let in. These will be chosen randomly from the ranks of the new owners.

Actually, Commissioner.com doesn't allow you to skip that week, so we may be stuck with a shortened game. It'll still be four days' worth of games. I'll double-check, but I don't think we'll be able to have an off-week this year.

Rather than a 4-game week, why not make it 11?

That week's games would run from July 11- July 24. I'd rather have that (personally) than a short week where you won't even get through your rotation once, and many All-Stars will be given the 11th off...

Is there a way to snoop around Commissioner.com? It asks me for a league name and stuff before going in...

Actually, one of the advanced options allows you to set 'BYE' as a matchup selection, so I might be able to fix that. Let me check it out.

EDIT - That seems to work. I registered a placeholder league - you can put in as much in the way of details as you like and pay later (or cancel, presumably). So you'd have to register a league to experiment with the options, but it wouldn't cost you.

Again, I would like to write a recommendation for Jason (PinstripePride).

Yes, there may be questions on if he were male or female, but he's a real good fantasy player who is devoted to his team night in and night out. I've played in some fantasy baseball leagues with him and all have been a treat. He's very knowledgable and wouldn't make any boneheaded trades. I would think that we would value someone who knows more fantasy sports. Maybe Jason can fill in kurt's spot, and jlw, miko, anybody else can fill in george's spot. Just IMO...

Just IMO...
    jason's really a girl..he's pretending he's a man..

anyway, this was a joke.....I believe in equal opportunity providers....it would be fun if any of the four get in the league

I can't see how we can play favorites by guaranteeing a slot for any one newcomer, YRM - I'm sorry. It just opens us up to all kinds of trouble. We said random at the start, and I think we have to stick by that.

However, Commissioner.com DOES allow multiple owners per team, which is an interesting development. If a forumer doesn't get a team of his or her own, there's nothing to stop him or her joining forces with another owner to manage a team. In fact, for anyone with unreliable Internet access or who's new to the game, this might be a good idea anyway.

Entry fee in this case is per team, not per owner. Commissioner.com allows you to have up to 4 owners per team, so we could have some real consortia forming here. Anyone who wants to take part but a) doesn't want to pay the full $25, b) isn't confident to take on a franchise of their own, c) doesn't want to get left out if there aren't enough teams for everyone, or d) just wants to make friends, I'd start asking around.

    But:

The alternative is to have more than 18 teams in the league. Which I wouldn't be entirely opposed to, although it would require a little more work. Commissioner.com allows an uneven number of teams per division, although that might be a scheduling nightmare - then again, paying for the site means that our commissioner won't have to care about that too much.

I say we could go up to 20 teams this year? Wasn't that our goal last year?

I vote for either keeping it at 18 teams, because it worked out well with the schedule last year, OR, expanding to 23 teams, which would enable you to play each team exactly once. If we can't expand to 23, then I say leave it at 18. I like having everyone play the same schedule w/in their division.

ETA: 20 would work, if we switched to 4 divisions of 5 teams each, and played a 23-game schedule.

if you thought that the draft last year was long...imagine how long it would take for 23 teams..

LOL. I didn't say it was a perfect idea, just that it works out, schedule-wise. I like balanced schedules...

Okay, I think 20 teams is viable, and would allow two more participants (and, by extension, more revenue for NYYFans.com - not to be sneezed at.) Assuming that we don't want less than 18 teams, and that more than 20 teams would leave us with a very thin draft, I think we've got two do-able options here. I'll post a poll in a separate thread - please go there to discuss the issue.

    More playoff teams?
Are we voting for 20 teams w/a 23 game schedule, or an imbalanced 22 game schedule?

You're right - assuming we take off the All-Star Break, there won't be any more playoff slots (unless we drop to 19 games, but I see no real utility in that). You'd have four division winners and that would be it, unless you went with unbalanced divisions. Scratch the "more playoff teams" argument.

You know, it just sunk in that I won't be sparring with George and Kurt this season.
