from what i know he's only a guaranteed Marlin for 1 season, the deal would have been for 4 seasons pending on if the Marlins got approval for their own stadium but now since that's not happening Lowell will only be with them for 1 season.

The inability to finance a ballpark could end up affecting the team's roster. The Marlins re-signed All-Star third baseman Mike Lowell this fall to what could potentially be a four-year, $32 million deal, but only if stadium plans are in place by Nov. 1, 2004. Otherwise Lowell can opt out of the remaining years of the deal after next season.
"We could not have Mike Lowell on our team if there is no new stadium," team President David Samson said earlier this month when the deal was finalized. "That's the bottom line. ... It's not even a discussion. There would not be the revenue, and there is no possibility."
So, they have until Nov 1, 2004 to put something together? Whether it be in Miami-Dade County, Broward or Palm Beach.
The fact is, that if they don't, it may not just affect Lowell's spot on the roster, but quite possibly MLB will finally "contract" the Marlins, or they will be moved to the DC area as predicted last year.
The $330 Million cost for a retractable roof ballpark just isn't available...the taxpayers are not willing to kick-in and any city or county commissioner who tries to push thru a public funded project will be run out of town.
Without a new park, or fans that are willing to support the team, you can bet that Florida will be the next franchise after the Expos to be moved to another city.

well if chavez doesn't work out, we now have a new 3B possibility next year...
This is interesting on the Vlad front as well... If they won't have the money for Lowell, they def. won't have it for Vlad...

I think this kills the Vlad to Florida possibilities. So it's Baltimore unless the Yanks are in it.Originally posted by rightfielder21

not to long ago don king was willing to donate 54 acres or so of land he had to build a multi purpose stadium maybe jeffrey loria should act on that since most of his fan base is in the broward and palm beach county areas
